Ben Killip (ex-town) in goal for them. I only have vague memories of him so he can’t have made much of an impression in the few games he played!

Could he be the player that someone posted about yesterday, saying he was at the club and would be signing for us?

Josh Benson & Killip ....at least Killip shouldn't come back to score against us. .....
Might save a penalty though...has form for it.

I expect he asked not to be selected - would be too painful to play against the club he is secretly in love with…

If we do he wasn't in the team or bench that played last Saturday.

Town: Will Mitchell, Billy Bradley, Cameron Walsh, Henry Brown, Finn Abraham, Harvey Cribb, Shakeel Brown, Alfie Foy, Grayson Giles, Charlie Clements, Jack Collins

Subs: Fortune Onoh, Seb Anton, Tom Ronaldson, Finley Fletcher, Harry Shipstone

Think Barnsley have made 11 changes and we've made 8? I thought there was a minimum number of outfield players who started Saturday had to start tonight

Needlessly gave away the throw that resulted in the chance. It's a collective issue as theres the defending to deal with the throw, but its a throw that needn't have been.

What I've noticed is he doesn't dive well. Noticed it in the penalties last week, he doesn't outstretch his arm and it stays tucked under. Pretty sure if/when you watch a replay of that first goal you'll see it.

Barnsley getting into the game a bit after the goal but we are by far the best side first half.

Regarding Cartwright I thought he is highly thought of at Hull? Those who have seen him play seem to be very critical of his general ability, besides the obvious mistakes leading to goals. Seems very odd as he was given the number 1 jersey and I expect both Cartwright and Hull expected him to be first choice.

His confidence looks shot at the minute. Completely spilled a ball that was just steadily rolling to him. Very psychological position, goalkeeper - hopefully once he learns to collect his nerves a little better he’ll come good. Early days for the lad.

We seem to have a number of goalkeeping experts on the forum that put every keeper under a huge microscope and analyse everything they do. In a lot of cases I don't think he's in particular to blame but the goalkeeping society will find a way that it's his fault then list off everything they think he is doing wrong.

I'm wondering what the credentials are of our goalkeeping experts. I think maybe one was an apprentice at Grimsby aged 15 that couldn't make the cut in the 1960's but no idea about the rest. School team and Sunday League pub team?

I think we are doing okay but Cartwright, Glennon and Pyke need to up their game. A well-taken goal by Barnsley but we need a bit of composure in the last 3rd. Eisa and Andrews look good and Khouri is doing ok learning his trade.

Cartwright is a liability, my good good that was such an easy take, slid in and somehow knocked the ball out his box!!..
Quite enjoyed that first half but it highlights our deficiencies once again, we are bloody toothless, we get balls in the box abd nobody is there, its almost as if there some kind of force field around the 18 yard box that prevents GTFC players getting in there!..
Liking the look of Andrews, can see him doing the Cinteh role quite comfortably tbh

Playing some good football, unlucky to be losing, Pike struggling to hold onto the ball and Cartwright needs to stop eating greasy chips with his gloves on just before kick off. Just need to get the final pass right. Still in it but wishing we had Clifton on the bench for his energy later if needed

I've played and coached goal kerpers over the years and I can tell you now Cartwright needs a lot of work but to a certain degree, that's why he's with us.
He's quite slow getting down, his reaction time for a good keeper is slow and he needs to learn to read the game better.
Mansfield, goal conceded was 100% his fault due to a p!as poor touch,  to the point where he nearly did again straight afterwards!..

I don't know about that but I was merely querying that he must be a good keeper if Hull rate him and he was given the number 1 shirt.

Hull didn't loan him to not play league games so something is amiss.

Passing the ball around fine but need to be more brave and create better chances. Several times we have Efete or somebody get the ball in a good position and instead of taking on their man and trying to cross they turn around and pass backwards to Waterfall.

I only made the Canon Ainslie primary school team because we only had 12 boys in our year and I did score the only goal we scored that season in 13-1 defeat to South Parade but I can still recognise a good goalkeeper from a dodgy one.

I've done my goalkeeper coaching badges if that's of any value?

I can't imagine anyone sharing a view on the lad is saying it with any degree of happiness about it, he's a local young lad hoping to make it in the game, we surely all want to see him do well.

But what we want and what we see can be very different things and unfortunately for the lad at the moment he's had a difficult start. If it was Tommy Forecast then it would be open season. It will be hard for him being a young keeper with every mistake seeming to lead to a goal and this will be a fantastic learning opportunity for him in dealing with adversity and mental resilience, it'll certainly make him a better player in the long run.

Considering the critical approach some take on here with outfielders and how they can be written off after a bad game or even a bad pass, everyone has to be held to the same standard ultimately. Doesn't mean we have to be nasty or spiteful about anything but you can't just ignore errors if he's aspiring to be a first team regular.

He's had a lot of the ball in midfield and generally kept possession ticking over nicely, but not really created anything of note. I would say that the movement ahead of him has been very pedestrian and maybe if we actually had some attackers making a few runs and dragging defenders around it might actually open up some opportunities for our more creative midfielders like Hunt.

Hunt has made some really nice, clever passes, but they haven't been defence splitting/chance creating passes. He also gets caught a bit too often for my liking.
So the risk-reward ,imho, is slightly weighted to the risk, hence he doesn't become first choice. If you compare him to Khouri , for example, he might not give the flashy passes, but equally he doesn't get caught as often.

Easy to blame Cartwright as his confidence has gone, but he is one of those players that will read the comments on here. Calling him a liability or telling him what he’s doing wrong just because you played in goal in the 4th year at school isn’t helping him. Personally  I think the whole team have been poor tonight. Very boring. We could play till tomorrow morning and wouldn’t score. It’s a rubbish cup but tip tapping around with no passion whatsoever. Not good enough.

No threat up front at all.

Efete having the most of some poor attacking play.

Bramwell and Khouri have had quiet but reasonably solid games.

Barnsley did just sufficiently to be mostly in charge, and Town have created very little up front.

Minutes in squad legs are really tbe only good points !

I’m not saying I would drop anyone but I’m not sure what Hunt can do to get in an eleven that isn’t stacked with forward movement. For as long as we play with a fairly static target man, Hunt’s passing ability is pretty wasted and he is pretty much guaranteed to stay on the bench.

Quite enjoyed the game to be honest. Obviously not a thriller in any sense of the word but being the competition it is it's been watched almost with a neutral mentality without any real bother about what the result is.

New system that looked like it had some positives with Efete and Glennon picking up some high positions. It's a different proposition to use that system in the league with what would be our first 11 but I liked how we moved the ball in general.

The glaringly obvious shortfall is the complete lack of any chances at all. In that regard I didn't really like Pyke this evening, did a few things well but not really in the game as much as he could have been.

Gnahoua keeps getting better each time I see him and I'm really starting to like him. Khouri didn't really do much wrong without making a real impression to boost his first team chances.

Really liked Bramwell, thought for a youngster he handled the game well and I'm hopeful we might see more of him later in the season if circumstances allow it.

Don't agree with those who said Hunt has been poor. I think his desire to want the ball is great, I think he just needed better movement ahead today as he often went back and sidewards with nothing to really go for up top.

Andrews I think won't look out of place with us throughout the season, certainly doesn't look to be a 'squad filler' in the mould of some of last seasons additions.

All in all, nice to see some of the other players get chance to show what they're about, liked the controlled manner of play and if this is a system that can work to our advantage in the league with the first 11 then it's a beneficial trial. If it is used with the first team in the league then hopefully a little more tempo might result in greater chances being created, guess we'll wait out on that one.

I thought Gnahoua showed what he could do likewise Khouri. Pyke was a disappointment to me and when Gardner came on I could see little difference between them. Bramwell did well and should secure a start soon, as did Efete as a wingback.

On the whole, we huffed and puffed but created little, if anything, in the last 3rd. Glennon seems to go from bad to worse for some reason and was nowhere near the previous form he had.

Onwards to Bradford and a different team selection and a win.

The club should play kids in this joke of a competition

Is this the same competition that we took 30 000 fans to Wembley for back in the 90s?

Not really. It was just for teams in the two lower divisions then.

In all fairness not many people ever turned up until the latter rounds back in the day. I remember sat in the Main Stand with me dad in the 90s watching us get battered by York in front of a couple of hundred when it was the Leyland Daf Cup. The highlight was Tony Rees sat in front of us out injured at the time taking umbrage to some random guy just sliding into the seat next to him and calling him 'Tone'.

'When you going to be back in the team Tone?' Needless to say he was met with a face like thunder and a none committed reply through gritted teeth of 'soon.'

Pretty much exactly the way i saw it.

We were very easy on the eye and while i think both Hunt and Andrews were decent individually, i think with them both together we seemed prone to recycle and reset backwards far too much which rendered us a little toothless.

Pyke was'nt great, Bramwell was a surprise  really assured, and the youth lad is a unit for his age.

As gtfc-chris says it, apart from the failure by Glennon and Efete to attack and push full backs towards their goal. So often, Efete does well up to the box then, with acres of grass in front of him, tamely passes backwards. When a cross did come in Pyke made a hash of it.

Hurst said he was disappointed that there was too little movement to attack the six yard box yet he signed Pyke who is as vanilla as can be. We don't just need a fox in the box, more a young lion!

Positives were the CB's, Bramwell, Khouri, Ganouha, Oisa and Andrews first 45.

Let's face it, both clubs treated it as a preseason game.

Back in those days it was only what is now League 1 and League 2 sides.

Now obviously it ridiculously includes some Premiership and I think some Championship under 23 or under 21 sides

However if I remember correctly at least for one season the competition allowed some clubs from what is now the National League because I'm sure we were knocked out by Morecambe at BP when they were in the Conference.

In a word.

No.

I think we were both knocked out by Morecambe but also beat them in 2008 to reach the final.

I’d happily watch this tournament from start to finish if it were in the same format as it used to be but I just can’t support this bastardised version of the competition…

So who would you drop for him to start?

Bramwell looks a prospect and half.  Very, very composed on the ball.

Interesting that we go with that box type midfield yet Hunt is one of the sitters and Khouri further forward.  I completely understand the thing with Hunt in that he has that ability to lose possession, he did it a few times last night. So play him further forward.  I like Khouri but he's less likely to unlock teams than Hunt and vice-versa I think Khouri offers more defensively.

I never want us to lose but I can't pretend to be disappointed that it looks likely we're out the competition.

Good run out for those looking to get back to fitness and stay sharp etc.  But was a bit disappointed in Pyke.  I know he lacked service for most of the game but he looked a little lethargic to me.  Was an opportunity for him to go clean through on goal and he looked to be running in treacle.

Depends on players' form and injuries.

That is correct. We lost on penalties and Russell Slade’s son Steve made his one and only appearance for us.

It was the match where youth team player Paul Ashton accidentally scored from a cross and was then never seen again, and Tony Crane infamously blasted his penalty over the Pontoon into orbit.

Some blaming our keeper for the first goal, having only seen the highlights it didn't show giving away the throw in but for me Efete was ball watching yet again for both goals.
Posted by: chaos33, September 6, 2023, 2:13pm; Reply: 105
He was ball watching for both but the 3 other Town defenders in the box are equally sloppy for the first, and the second goal was more a case of the all too easy cross into the box from the overload so more responsibility there for me. Even if Efete had been sharp and goal side it would’ve been very difficult for him to defend that ball facing his own goal and about 5 yards out. I wouldn’t single out Miche for either goal.

Just watched the highlights and don’t think you can really point any blame at Cartwright or the defending for either goals . Just well worked and good finishing

Being an impatient individual. I made my mind up about Pyke during the Mansfield league game when Rose won the ball in the air flicking on and Pyke first failed to anticipate then ambled after it in a token effort . I would be interested to know what our player research saw in him given his career record to date (140 games 9 goals in 7 years) and his performances so far. Feel free to mark me down as negative / critical.

Not quite as impatient but made my mind up last night as twice he tried an extravagant flick both going to Barnsley players. Tony Rees would hang his head in shame watching that.

I’ve not made my mind up just yet but his goal scoring record and the fact he was played at wing back for Shrewsbury really concerns me. Particularly when we only have three strikers. I know others disagree but if you’re actually a goal threat, you don’t get put at wing back. Hopefully he will come good and prove me wrong but our strike force looks low on quality and quantity currently. Which isn’t to say Rose isn’t good because I think he is excellent. But if he got injured at the weekend then we’d be screwed.

To cut the lad some slack, his overall goalscoring record is largely irrelevant.  We might as well see what Anthony Glennon's goalscoring record is like and judge him on it.

What's arguably relevant is his goalscoring record when playing up top, unfortunately that doesn't make excellent reading either.  https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/rekeil-pyke/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/476050/plus/0?saison=&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=14&trainer_id=
Stats don't tell you everything though, the majority of those games are at a higher level.  His games at this level are either as a kid or at a basket case club that were getting pulled down the drain before the pubes.

I'm keen to see what he can do when he's a) in our first team and b) got a sustained run of games under him.  That includes competitive fixtures too, not in the EFL Trophy with experimental teams and formations.

Liam Hearn didn't hit the ground running here.  For the fondness we look back on his time with, his first 8-10 games he looked completely out of sorts and well out of his depth.  Once that first goal came he transformed as a player, confidence is so powerful for a striker.

I've not really found myself impressed with his performances when coming off the bench and I definitely want to see more from him.  More physicality, more movement, more anticipation and more energy.  But it's still early days.  Also keen to see how he operates in a two.
