He said that the 1951 to 54 Grimsby Team was the best he'd ever seen. So was he the best ever Grimsby Manager?

I believe when a similar question was asked a few months ago Alan Buckley came out on top.

Might be an unpopular opinion but every time I read that quote to me it feels like this is Bill Shankly complimenting Bill Shankly more than anything else.

But if that was the case, he could have said it about any of his teams.  He actually singled out that team, so it must count for something.

It depends on when you first started watching the Mariners.

Did a terrific job at Workington, saving them from a third successive application for re election and took them to mid table as well as a good cup run .

I believe the quote comes from his autobiography, published 1976

Would absolutely love it if this was a made up quote.

I was just looking for some context. I’ve read his autobiography albeit some time ago but I’d expect this kind of quote to have taken my attention.
I was merely thinking it had to be a quote in and of it’s time and pre his Liverpool days.

Uncle Bill tried to sign my Dad in 1952. He had scouted him 5 times in person, as Dad played for the YMCA. He was offered a contract but had to turn it down due to other work commitments. We never did get to find out if he would have become part of Shanks 'best ever' team 'since the War' (remember he was only talking about the previous 9 years though)

I think you will find that his exact quote was  that his Grimsby team was "Pound for pound, and class for class, the best football team I have seen in England since the war"
But he left us in 1954.

How many managers have taken Town to more than one promotion? Paul Hurst and Alan Buckley.  Any others?

Bertie Mee said to Bill Shankly
Have you heard of the North Bank Highbury?
Bill said - no! I don’t think so
But I’ve heard of the Pontoon   -   Grimsby

It would be interesting to know when he said it .
If it was during his Liverpool days then it would be a great compliment.

Saying that if you Google a few more Shankly quotes he pretty much said the same everywhere he went 😂
He was a great manager that even back in those days knew how to work with the press

Marking his own homework and celebrating getting 100% with that quote wasn’t he?
