Just wondering what formation you think we may start off with this season, bearing in mind the new signings so far?

It looks like 4-2-3-1 to me, with the players we’ve brought in.

Either a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1. Depends how we want to play I suppose. Will likely use both throughout the season depending on if we want to be slightly more defensive or not.

Agree. If he wants to dabble with 3 at the back we appear to have a degree of flexibility. A few seem able to cover both FB/CB.

The availability of 7 subs makes in game management crucial as well. Remember the days of only 2 subs?

Agree with everyone above saying a 4-2-3-1 (or a variation of) as our default set-up for the coming season.

Hursty loves a compact defence, and three central midfielders really supports the back-line in staying narrow and 'keeping us shape.'
Those three CM's, with real pace and competency out wide, also allows for quick, threatening transitions in play.

And with a player up top who can hold the ball, harry defenders, and act as a fox in the box depending on the situation, all these of which Rose seems capable of doing, could make us a real threat.

I think we'll see our possession stats go up this year, but i think the team will also be very capable and comfortable out of possession, as they know we'll have the numbers, shape and the energy to keep teams out, while being able to get up the other end at speed.

Very exciting times potentially.

4-1-4-1

Hmmm. Not so sure it's that straightforward (or at any rate it isn't in my mind...though my mind might be the problem!  ;D )

If you say 4-2-3-1. who's the 1?

Orsi, Rose, Wilson, or the L2 version of Haaland that everyone is hoping Hurst can sign (assuming he hasn't already spent
all of his pocket-money on the new signings)?

El General has yet to show a great deal of faith in Orsi, Rose may well be earmarked for the No.10 position (and if he's the 1 we'll be
keeping it on the deck...no bad thing perhaps), and Wilson doesn't have the obvious credentials for the striker's role in a
L2 promotion-challenging side.

I've little doubt that PH can find a L2-Haaland, but whether he can afford him is another matter entirely, as wealthier clubs will also be
looking in that direction. My gut-feeling is that we won't be able to sign a big, proven goalscorer for the No.9 shirt because of that.

With pace on the flanks (Vernam and Eisa probably first choices, Khan and Wilson backups) then if Rose is No.10 the 2 are surely
going to be Hunt and Clifton. Positive-looking, but I fancy PH would want more 'steel'.

As is probably clear to everyone now, I'm struggling to see how the signings suggest any particular formation.
My tentative guess would be 4-3-3.

Rose is definitely the 1, he's not been signed to play the 10. He's an out and out 9. Forward options of Khan, Wilson, Vernam, Eisa and probably throw in Harry for a starting spot in the 3 behind the striker.

That makes the most sense to me too, but it will disappoint quite a few on here who are looking for a 6-footer to lead the line.

The 6ft+ I’m hoping for is more to give us a plan B, or a plan A with a certain kind of opposition, which might involve Rose or Vernam at 10 or it might be with Orsi sticking close to the big lad with 2 up top. Not expecting a proven goal scoring target man for this level because I can’t envisage PH allocating his budget like that. Especially when we need at least one quality CM in still. Im thinking a Manni upgrade type - Harry Smith or Scott Quigley? Latter maybe too much of a gobby shithouse for Hurst mind.

Just a basic 442 with 2 wide wingers would be easily fitted in to the players we have.

Not too sure we have a natural pairing of strikers up top to go through a season with - rose as one but who else? Orsi struggled to dislodge on loan kids for a spot on the bench for most of last season (Cup run apart). Kids that hurst then mostly sent back as not good enough - pepple, simmonds, richardson, etc.

Cant see Hurst going from that opinion to thinking orsi is the man to be half of a front pairing for the season.

If its going to be a front two then surely we will be needing another first choice striker to go with Rose.

Personally I think 4 3 3 or similar (4 1 4 1 / 4 2 3 1) is more likely.
