Think it might allow us to be more of an attacking threat if, as I assume it will be, we are returning to the 4231 of last season.

With Richardson playing as the #10 it will mean there's someone closer to Taylor than as has been while we've been setting up as 433.

Such a strong looking bench. With substitutions being more important, this is looking more like it.

Wow. That’s a fair few good players not making the squad.
Personally, I’d have JMD in the squad if not starting as he’s better than Kiernan for me.

Good attacking bench Hunt,Green,Wearne,Orsi,Simmonds, Maher and of course Battersby

I’d have at least had him on the bench. Wearne for example has shown very little since coming in, bar a good ten minutes against Northampton.

His line up makes sense to me, rewarding the recent goalscorers and going with the wonky 4-4-2 weve seen alot, a technically gifted striker up front with taylor, should be more like the team of last season playing this way
Posted by: Kris2, September 3, 2022, 2:32pm; Reply: 15
Now Hurst got Hunt I doubt JMD will get much of a sniff. Probably out on loan in the NL soon.
Posted by: devs, September 3, 2022, 2:40pm; Reply: 16
Players not even on bench shows how strong we suddenly look - and McAtee and Scannell still out, two of our best technically gifted players

PH can afford to be more attacking cos (for example) if a full back got injured during game he could put Harry there and/or Smith and bring Maher on

Green and Hunt are great subs in midfield

Shame Pepple can't make bench but he may well go down pecking order on regular basis

Looking very strong and will be interesting to see how quickly it all clicks

Taylor must have been tanking it to get from Tesco to Newport in that time.
The big question, will Omar celebrate if he scores?

Bring Maher on if Smith switched to FB
But better obvs if Harry switched there and we can keep attacking style

He'll probably jump up and down like he just won the world cup, take his shirt off, light a cigar and blow smoke at the pontoon. Probably going to enjoy today and probably has it in for us like most of the former players from that team for some reason.

I'm not sure how anyone expects him to do that when he never gets any game time and he still manages to make things happen in the 5-7 minutes he gets when he does but never gets in the team. Hurst already decided he doesn't like him because him and Doig were defenders and get triggered by any player who isn't good at defending even if they get goals and assists each time they play.

No he's reffing it fairly. The only thing he might have missed so far was a deflection on Bogle's effort when he gave a goal kick. Everything else he's got spot on and he hasn't bought any of the exaggerated contact from Newport's players.

Kiernan , imho, makes better decisions, but to my eye looks a bang average div 2 winger. So an improvement on Sousa, but not as much as we might have been hoping

Andy Cook puts Bradford 1 up and the much loved Stefan Payne scores for Welling

Tbf Kiernan did score in midweek, but I totally get the Sousa contrasts. I noticed on Walsall's forum last week a few mentions about him not having enough end product, which certainly adds weight to the comparison.

Posted by: Poojah, September 3, 2022, 3:55pm; Reply: 76
Solid enough half that and I think we look the more accomplished team, despite not threatening massively.

Happy enough with that given our propensity to do well late in games and the options on the bench.

Have we ever played such a good half of football against Newport? We certainly look more comfortable in this 442 our movement off the ball is the best its been all season, we're controlling the midfield and pressing high and putting pressure on Newport when they're in possession.

Only a couple of things worrying me, one we're not really creating any chances, Newport and our poor passing is snuffing that out right at the end of our attacking movement and when Newport do break on us you always ge tthe feeling theres a goal coming.

Special mention for our ref who's having a good game so far probably only missed the deflection on Bogles shot that should of been a corner. We don't get to say that often and it can easly change in this country so getting it in early while I can  ;D
Posted by: pontoonlew, September 3, 2022, 3:56pm; Reply: 78
Richardson looks like a classy player, he’d probs have had a good opportunity if Kiernan hadn’t played like a competition winner.

Morris & Holohan bossing the middle and Clifton’s effort on goal was a cracker
Posted by: headingly_mariner, September 3, 2022, 3:57pm; Reply: 79
Much the better side.

Kiernan is the most wasteful winger I've ever seen.

New lad looks like he needs to see a bit of the ball. Bogle looks dangerous.
Posted by: Badger57, September 3, 2022, 3:58pm; Reply: 80
Decent first half but no cutting edge. Could have been 2 up in the first 10 mins. Glennon wasteful with uncharacteristic poor deliveries. Think Bryn Morris has been outstanding.

60% possession away from home in the first half in both this game and against walsall is a pretty mad statistic, if our attack starts firing more we'll be at the top end of the table easy

HT at 0-0 and we seem to have the better of the half. Options are on the bench so I'm looking forward to us scoring. Let's hope our new fitness regime helps in the second half and we finish them off. As Chrisblor posted the ref is doing his job which is nice to see and makes a change for the good.

I must mention the town fans there who you hear above the commentary.

Good firet half, definitely the better team. Have to say there has been so much opportunity for kiernan and he hasn't made the most or it albeit efete has been frustrating in support. Would have liked JMD to have had the opportunity to take over in that role, shames he's not on the bench, I think wearne can count his self lucky to have made the 18 ahead of him.  Maybe the new lad might be an option if kiernan doesn't start making more of these opportunities, or perhaps clifton switching over to the right.

1 point outside of the play-offs as it stands with a game in hand.

Who needs Bogle.

Even at orient, a pen and wonder goal.
Paul Hurst proving- again- what a coach he is, just want us to get that first win at home now

Only team that have beaten us in the league this season are currently sat top having won 6 and drawn 1 of their 7 games.

We’re alright.

If Bogle had been playing for Town he'd have had a hattrick.

Unbelievable effort from the players, we out worked them and out fought them.

The players desire to win cannot be underestimated.

Dominant from start to finish without actually creating much. I counted one good ball into the box from about 15 goes, if we can get that sorted we could genuinely be automatic promotion contenders based on that.

Morris and Holohan absolutely superb, Richardson and Simmonds with great debuts. Clifton grew into it and could’ve easily scored 3 today!

I’m going to say it, I’m excited

We have the quality squad for using 16 players per game, if we need them.  And to select the 16. This year s without McAtee and others, and we have a home game in hand.

Unlike some games last season, our away form is outstanding this season.

Clifton’s goal gets better with each viewing. Not known for his composure and coolness under pressure. He had 4 or 5 defenders around him.  Still scores and sends the keeper the wrong way.  He has become a goal scorer.  Stepping up as competition for places increases.

Fingers crossed for a bit of home form and things could look very good in a few weeks time. UTM.

The new lad Simmonds looked real good when he came on.
Both goals sublime.
Kept our set routine of only scoring in the last 30 minutes going 🤣

Excellent win. Another clean sheet as well, things are building nicely. I firmly believe only injuries will stop us from being play off contenders.

Hurst suggesting Harry's goal might have been an OG, hence their defence looking flat footed

National League top 4 tonight:

Chesterfield
Wrexham
Notts County
Solihull Moors

The will all be very grateful that they don’t have to play and lose to Grimsby this season.

Totally agree, easy to get stuck down there for 10 years or more, just like some of those “big” teams have found  :-/

What a cracking win that is. Would have been happy with a point based on previous meetings and Newport are a pretty decent side, but it sounds like we were well in control for the entire game.

Imagine how good we'll be when the strikers get scoring.

Great performance. Solid and well deserved throughout. And what a clearance off the line from Holohan! And check out how many goals the top 4 in the National League scored today. That is going to be one hell of a dogfight for those two spots between those 4 teams!
