Max Wright is rumoured to be trialling with York. Not sure if York have replaced their keeper Jameson yet who went to Harrogate.

York newspaper is trumpeting them as 'promotion winning' but then backtracks sheepishly in the article to note that neither of them were actually involved in the play offs or much past January.

It's like the kind of article we used to see about our new signings.

I expected Sousa to sign there tbh. Think he'll go there or maybe Gateshead

He's a Leeds lad. Good friends with Malik Wilks, I understand. I suspect York would be quite handy for him, but I think he deserves another shot with a promotion chasing club and I think next season will be too early in their development for that.

Yeah, that's why I expected it. Halifax or Chesterfield other options that wouldn't mean a move away. On these signings York are making you wouldn't expect them to be challenging but should be solid enough for midtable. If anyone can eek out a team that's greater than the sum of its parts though, Askey's a good bet

He's better than that level. I hope he gets an EFL club, he was rated by many as up there with the best keepers in league Two only 2/3 seasons ago, he's only 32.

Are Boston full time? No disrespect.

Surely there’ll be plenty of takers for Sousa in the conference. There would be for Wright too if he had a decent fitness record. Still a bit sad, reality aside, that these two aren’t Mariners anymore. 🫤

He was never up there with the best keepers in L2. His shot stopping perhaps but too many flaws in the rest of his game. He may only be 32 but his form has been on a terminally downwards trajectory for at least the last three seasons.

i thought hat he was beginning his teaching career, so the part time opportunity at Boston was ideal?

Disagree, but that's okay.

Macca is decent and will forever be remembered as one of our better keepers but surely, if he was as good as we believe, other clubs would’ve taken a punt on him, even if Macca turned them down.

Sadly, I’d argue that Boston is his level now or perhaps a mid table conference side.

We dropped him, clearly for more than just form reasons but it didn’t hurt us. Crocombe wasn’t regarded as being anything special yet came in and helped take us up, proving I guess that keepers don’t need to be brilliant. That said, Macca is 32 and rumours of back issues and so on, career changes and what not mean it’s unlikely a league club will fancy him.

He gave us his all and will be rightfully remembered but he’s gonna and we’re moving in an upward trajectory…

" i cant afford to go a month without being paid"

Sorry James, i like you, you've been a good servant, but you've had a testimonial year, been paid handsomely for years, someone in your position can certainly afford to go a month without!

Professional footballers all know that one day they will have to hang their boots up, later than sooner for most if they are injury-free. Common sense should tell them to prepare for that day and not wait till the writing is on the wall.

I would hazard the agenda has been driven by Sky as poverty porn gets attention. A massive kitchen and a double garage hardly convinced me he was poor. I know we live to our means but surely a lower league footballer at 32 should know their best salary is behind them.

He doesn't stop getting paid today though, the way it works is that we will pay his wages either until the end of this month or until he gets fixed up if he signs for someone this month. Once August hits, he will need reminding that fans attended numerous testimonial events that raised him a decent sum of money if he's still unemployed.

Hearing we've put a contract out to Sousa, whether he comes back or not is a different question.

Like others have said, fully expect him to end up at York/Halifax maybe.

How do you know what his financial commitments are? He may have also have invested any testimonial proceeds.

Said the same in our own chat.. In a time where people are having to use food banks.. he’s been one of the top earners at town and paid out for his testimonial, not skint by any stretch of the imagination.

Yeah, 28 days severance pay for professional footballers at the end of their contract.

I feel for James Mckeown, and any out of contract player as being unsure of where future income will come from must make it difficult to plan. However this is not a new thing is it? Being a professional footballer is now a saturated market and lower league players often find themselves in this situation annually. James however has been very fortunate to be employed consistently, with pay increments, in the town he lives, with no commuting costs for over a decade now. It has been apparent to anyone with an ounce of football knowledge that he would be in this position for probably 6-8 months now, so surely he prepared for this. Now I’m sure that the narrative of this interview was driven by sky, and that it seemed like a good advert of his availability to Macca, but I feel there are plenty more qualified players to make that argument than him.

Regardless, I genuinely wish him all the best.

Boo hoo james McKeown . Try a normal job and getting laid off with no notice then you realise how it feels to be skint , wondering how to pay the rent on a 2 bed house !

All the talk on here is about Macca, fair enough,  but please spare a thought for Max Wright. He never got to earn what Macca did, and his career has been cut short by injuries.  Football can be a cruel sport at times, especially at the lower end of the football pyramid.

Judging by the pigs ear he was making of that wrap, I don't think a career in catering is on the cards!

Bloody hate these type interviews where they have Sky Sports News on in the background.

Bit cringe but fair play to McKeown doing it to highlight his availability a bit more.

At his best Macca was an excellent shot stopper and served us well from that perspective.  Unfortunately he never really improved his biggest flaw which was being unable to command the box leaving us susceptible to direct teams.  He was a loyal servant to the club and wherever he ends up, if our paths cross, he’ll get applause from me.

Wow, that's quite a drop in calibre of player they've got when compared to Dallas and Sbarra. He was shite.

If I was about to start negotiating terms with potential employers I’m not sure I’d go on national TV and tell people I’m skint.

Based on what evidence?

Performance wise he wasn’t up to much and that was proven in team selection but there’s little to suggest attitude was an issue.

Decent move for all involved I’d say…

Think Mani will do good for Halifax. Heard we actually wanted to sign him on a permanent deal but Hurst didn't see him as his first choice striker so he turned us down to seek other opportunities as a first team player.

Tend to agree with you re Jones as I remember the Stockport home game where he was having a stinker but he never stopped wanting the ball and didn’t hide despite not getting any better throughout the game. Sometimes moves just don’t work out and I am sure some of this summer signings will fail to live up to our expectations but that’s football and all you can ask of any player is that he gives 100% and IMO Jones did.

Think people are being harsh on Mckeown maybe a bit of jealousy even. The guy has had a good career and deservedly earned himself a good standard of living he would like to keep it would seem. Now even if you’re skint and live in a 2 bedroom house you want to at least to maintain that standard. He’s still got bills and credit cards like all of us just because he has a nice big house doesn’t mean he’s rich, I bet just like most of us especially monthly paid he’s counting the days to pay day.

Hope he gets fixed up somewhere soon he’s still young for a keeper plenty of time for him to hit top form and even get back to league football. All the best to him I say.
