Never really understood this obsession with playing the national anthem at cup finals…don’t think I’ve ever seen it or been part of it whenever I’ve been to Wembley…

It’s your choice (and rightly so). not to be part of it.  But do you boo it ?  I think taking the knee is outdated and has been hijacked. I don’t clap. But I don’t  boo. I actually show respect for others opinions.
It’s nothing g to with royalty. Scousers say they’re. ‘Scouse’  not ‘English’. That’s why they boo.
But still claim dole and compensation at any opportunity. !!!

After hearing a lot of Liverpool fans being interviewed at dinnertime up Wembley way not a Scouser amongst them!

Loads of right wing moaning every time this happens. It’s a song about a sky fairy protecting an unelected ruler. It’s outdated and only relevent at an FA Cup final as a Royal (probably Prince William) will be in attendance to present the cup. Liverpool fans boo it because they have had a Prime Minister send gunboats up the Mersey and another plan to intentionally neglect the city to allow it to ruin. No idea why they booed Abide With Me though.

Agree, booing other countries National Anthems is very embarrassing, booing your own is just bizarre even if you’re not patriotic.

Guess you’ll refund any earnings from that period.
Apologies to others for this being non footy. Feel free to give me grief

I explained partly why Liverpool fans boo the anthem. I didn’t say I agreed with it. I attested to the Queen because as far as I’m aware she is an actual physical being, rather than god who more than likely isn’t. You only get two choices. You might find this strange - as most do - but you don’t have to be a royalist to serve.

I think the royal family should be disinherited and put on a rowing boat back to Germany, but I still wouldn't boo the national anthem.

Should be about the sport and nothing else.

Good news. Back to footy.
In my opinion it shouldn’t be played in non National matches. It has no relevance.  I also believe that England should have our own anthem. Just like we’ve finally taken back the George Cross let’s have our own anthem.
Jerusalem is my choice. Closely followed by Up The Mariners.

While I agree that the National Anthem is a rather outdated, mournful sounding tune, I as an Army Vet of 14 years would never boo it, and I don't think very much of those who do!

Liverpool fans rightly boo the national anthem in my opinion. The absolute sh!t they've had from the establishment, as a City and a fan base for 40 years is unforgiveable. If you want to understand a little of what they've been through, victimised and secondarily victimised over and over, by the powers that be in this country, then have a read of this journal article

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/258182269_The_legacy_of_Hillsborough_Liberating_truth_challenging_power. .

Its absolutely shocking how they've been treated. Even now, the general narrative in the media that has had an effect on the assumptions of most Brits is that Scousers are 'always the victims'. Well, read that and then assess that opinion if it is one you hold.

As for your comment below on Scousers - obvious and outdated.

Time we did away with a national anthem that is nothing to do with the nation.

Those contentious and shocking lyrics in full! The composer of the UK and Commonwealth national anthem is unknown. It was adopted as an anthem in September 1745, during the reign of George II (1727 – 1760). https://www.classicfm.com/discover-music/british-national-anthem-lyrics/

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen!

O Lord our God arise,
Scatter our enemies,
And make them fall!
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all!

Not in this land alone,
But be God’s mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world o’er.

From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O’er her thine arm extend,
For Britain’s sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!

Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour,
Long may she reign!
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!

Perhaps we don’t sing the third verse because it doesn’t blow enough smoke up the bottom of the monarchy, rather supports the nation, the people, the population…

I don't like the national anthem. I'm against the idea of a monarchy (and even if we do have one, the sheer pomp wealth and absurdity of it all is gross) and tbh really doesn't resonant with me or the things I love about the UK.

I've always thought Jerusalem would be a better anthem for England - it actually talks about the beauty of landscape etc (I know it's still very religious but it's traditional so would be rooted in history)

Last time I was at an event with the national anthem I didn't join in nor clap it at the end, but neither did I boo it.

At best that tag line is tribalistic, classless, insensitive and ignorant. At worst it’s disrespectful to the innocent men, women and kids who died going to a football match.
You don’t like an entire group of people based on your limited experience of them - fine but, to me that line is totally unnecessary.
You are perpetuating rubbish that was built upon words by such luminaries as Boris Johnson and Kelvin MacKenzie. They’re not the kind of people I’d want to be associated with but each to their own I guess.

Nothing to do with what happened at Hillsbrough- they were found innocent

Theres the Heisel Stadium Disaster for example, this attitude of everyones against us

I stand by the fact that they have an entitlement of they can do what they want but when it happens to them, theres uproar. Always the victims. Theres a reason that they are extremely disliked across the footballing world particuarly in the UK

I respect your opinion, i’d ask that you respect mine

It’s actually mental that people STILL try and make comparisons between Heysel - where 14 fans were prosecuted for manslaughter, with two police chiefs and the head of the Belgian FA also charged - and Hillsborough, where nobody has ever been charged with a criminal offence and the whole  thing has been proven as a 30-year cover up from the police, government and press.

There’s been at least two prime time ITV dramas about it and a feature length BBC documentary. It’s not even a secret. How bad must it have been for it to just be openly admitted on prime time television?

As for people on benefits, not sure anyone living around NE Lincs is in any position to throw stones…

You’re deluded if you think that the tag line has nothing to do with Hillsborough.
The Heysel disaster was an avoidable tragedy and people will have to live with their actions from that day. Loss of life in those circumstances is absolutely awful, although I never quite understand the use of Heysel as a retort to anyone mentioning Hillsborough.
I have no problem with respecting your opinion no matter how much I may question it but, I cannot respect the crass way in which you expressed it.

Hopefully our season won't end until early June, when it does we can look forward to a good couple of months of threads like this one, add to that.....

- More Lincoln obsession
- More laughing at the Scunts falling to bits (hopefully)
- What Hurst got right or wrong in the play offs
- Is Bogle coming back?
- Is Amond coming back?
- Former player is available.... should we?
- XXX should have been offered a deal
- XXX shouldn't have been offered a deal.
- Fenty (getting lower down the list TBH)
- The new owners are crap because they don't throw millions at it when Chesterfield, Notts etc.. sign someone we've heard of..

Lets just hope the sun shines and the cricket is a decent watch.

Maybe everybody singing  "the wheels on the bus" while levitating will pacify those who don't like the National anthem or take offence at the knee/not taking the knee.

Mind you the Eddie Stobart movement will probably take offence that a bus song has been selected and blockade the motorways.

We pay our Queen about 9 million per year,  we pay the Royal family about  67 million per year. On average they cost us about £1 per  tax payer. Apparently  the Royal family  generate for the country about 19 billion , trade and tourism.   Liverpool football team spend about 135 million on wages.   Liverpool the City  earned its  wealth from Cotton and Slavery. And of course the Beatles.   I know to appease  the scoucers and other anti Royalist lets sing a Beatles song  or Gerry Marsdens masterpiece. FFS.  Be proud of our Country and History.

There are massive chunks of our history not to be proud of. Yes let’s learn from it and make us a better nation but I’m not in any way proud of a celebration of how we went around the world pillaging other nations.
As for GSTQ, it epitomises such history and indeed perpetuates that forelock tugging. It’s very much overdue a change. Even if it’s just the lyrics but it’s a dirge with whatever words. Contrast the French, Welsh or Italian anthems so much more rousing.

Then there’s the Scousers. My word at least they stand up for what they believe in and don’t let successive Tory govts beat them. We as an area just suck up the lies the millionaires on the right of the house tell us and believe they actually care about anyone who is not loaded. Nothing better than collaborators.

I actually feel sorry for you. Your life must be sh1t.
Internet bullies are generally insecure. You need professional help.

His old man delivered a lecture from a solid gold throne this week telling normal people there was nothing the country to do to improve their standard of living. His nan forked out £12m of her ill-gotten cash to a sex-trafficked child who was (likely) raped by his uncle. Didn’t see him shedding a tear for these people?

We pay our Queen about 9 million per year,  we pay the Royal family about  67 million per year. On average they cost us about £1 per  tax payer. Apparently  the Royal family  generate for the country about 19 billion , trade and tourism.   Liverpool football team spend about 135 million on wages.   Liverpool the City  earned its  wealth from Cotton and Slavery. And of course the Beatles.   I know to appease  the scoucers and other anti Royalist lets sing a Beatles song  or Gerry Marsdens masterpiece. FFS.  Be proud of our Country and History.

I've always wondered how they can possibly say that this is true? Are they honestly saying there are people who travel to London for a trip who wouldn't have done so if we didn't have a particular family lording it over us? If the only reason you're coming to this country is because we've got a royal family then you need to do a hell of a lot more research before travelling somewhere. Plus you're unbelievably sad.

The buildings and the history etc would all still be present. One of the most visited places in France is the Palace of Versailles which hasn't had a royal family live in it for about 250 years. And France gets more tourists than us in general. Just saying.

Frances  largest  group of tourists come from  London and UK. Perhaps you can join them but on a permanent basis if the UK is not to your liking.

Of course. If you're not willing to be a boot licker to a random family who are supposedly your superiors then you must go elsewhere.

I love the UK. It's a beautiful country with a rich history and it's had a large part in making civilisation what it is today (in good and bad ways). It has also made many significant cultural, engineering and scientific contributions to the world.. Unfortunately, there is still a significant percentage of the population who are serfs in all but name and believe they must still doth their caps to their "betters". Anyone that speaks in a plummy accent, has wealth and was educated privately must surely be better than us right?
