Good to see Maguire-Drew back. Big game for Coke this to prove he’s still up to it. Massive game, COME ON TOWN

What's happened to Amos? Injured or dropped/rested?
Posted by: chaos33, March 8, 2022, 7:14pm; Reply: 3
Very surprising to see JMD on the bench given PH said he wasn’t close to being available.

Didn't think Burgess played very well Sat. so although not in Coke's fan club I think it was the obvious and sensible thing to do.

Yes.

Thought burgess was great. I would’ve started him. I guess Coke gives better shape defensively for a difficult sway game.

I’d be worried about Powell’s pace against Pearson and Waterfall.
Posted by: HertsGTFC, March 8, 2022, 7:26pm; Reply: 8
Thought Burgess was decent on Saturday but though his form has been patchy kind of get why Coke has come in, sort of.

Avoid defeat and see what happens as on paper the bench looks like it provides a few attacking options.

Wondered if we might have seen Scannell for Sousa at some point. Sousa wasn’t great on Saturday.

Good to see JMD back in the squad - just hope he is actually fit to play if needed.

Don't want him to be breaking down again with tough games still lined up.

3 points by any means tonight would be great, especially for those fans going for the 2nd time !!

Good bench tonight !

Hurst said he dropped him in favour of Crookes on Saturday because Woking were a very tall side, don’t know about tonight though.

Gotta love BBC football. Usually they have Waterfall in the centre of midfield, tonight he is on the right wing!!! Cliftons height will be advantageous in his new position of centre half.

Bit of a nothing game with v few chances apart from 1 long range shot which was going over anyway before crocombe tipped it over.theyve hot 4 forwards missing and it shows.they try to pass the ball but just arent v good at it.we are slightly better until it gets to the decisive pass ! Midfield is v competitive.abrahams is getting nothing
Must be v frustrating. Waterfall n pearson are rock.like, but sousa n efete arent their usual threatening presence.good crowd in  small following from town

I’d be making subs now. Scannel on for Sousa. Mani on. Maybe even JMD on. Coke off and burgess on. Take your pick. Presumably Hurst will wait for another 10-15 mins.

It's the usual reaction to watching Hurst standing around until the 80th minute when the whole ground can see we need to make a change.

Sometimes it’s hard to work out what he sees. Sousa has been less influential in recent weeks and looks like a rest would do him good. Scannell has been fit for weeks and irrespective of what people think, has a pedigree above this level, so why doesn’t he give him a chance? After all, it was his decision to keep him!

What’s the point in putting a partially fit JMD on the bench and not bringing him on? In what regard does this make sense? If we’re losing and desperate, we would bring him on for 15,! Do it then! Nope. Surely it’d be better to put Grant on the bench if he’s fit. Or Amos. Just don’t get it. Generally behind Hurst, but the use of the squad deserves scrutiny….

tbh there are overreactions if we win or lose. If we win everyone starts talking about the playoffs and how many points off the top we are and if we lose one game the season is now over.

Ah well you can't win them all, Southend are also on a great run of form.

Let's not be too critical, fine margins and Efete has been brilliant for us recently.

Still think we missed the trick in the first half, sounded like we had the better of it but just cannot score enough from open play..
And I have to say it, Hurst really needs to make changes earlier, the one time he did (Notts County) look at the difference it made!..
Looking tougher for the next 2 Saturday's now, play offs are gone for me this season.

Fair play to southend really, their fans probably thought they had a good chance of winning this one and they sound like theyve been pretty solid

For us I think its more about the players off the pitch than on the pitch for us, we know roughly what the starting line up had to offer, but we need JDM, scannell, taylor, rhaiky and others to be able to add something to make us playoff contenders

We weren't even drawing, an ex professional footballer couldn't understand why he didn't change it earlier, especially as we hardly created a decent chance in the second half.

Fine margins.....always the case when you don't score enough.  Rarely threatened this evening and the subs when eventually made sounded like they had the reverse effect. Did Mani touch it more than once ?

Close on result but didn't sound like we were that close in reality.

Posted by: Poojah, March 8, 2022, 9:44pm; Reply: 83
Always a tough game tonight. Other results have gone out way; we’re never catching Wrexham.

A win on Saturday is paramount though. Yeovil are bang out of form.
Posted by: Morris Minor, March 8, 2022, 9:45pm; Reply: 84
Time for a reality check.
Simply nowhere near good enough.
No plan B.
Poor use of substitutes.
Will do well to finish in the top half.
Finishing below teams that we would not think twice about a couple of years ago.
Big changes are needed if they want to go back to the Football league.
Support is starting to dwindle and will continue to do so if we carry on plodding along like we are now.

Despite tonight the table still looks ok. All to play for but it is very frustrating that we cannot raise our game when needed.

Why is Scannell and JMD on the bench - surely them two on both wings for the last half hour would provide a threat?
Posted by: pontoonlew, March 8, 2022, 9:47pm; Reply: 86
Our form against the top sides is pretty rancid, constantly playing ‘not to lose’ in these games and so often coming out on the wrong end of a 1 goal margin

Every game is tough if you make it so. We’ve dropped so many points when we’ve been level at half time and by the odd goal in most cases. We look soft.
Posted by: Maringer, March 8, 2022, 9:49pm; Reply: 88
The surprise for me isn't that we're failing to score the goals in these sorts of games so much as that we're conceding so many soft ones at the other end. I've not been to an away game this season yet but it sounds as though we're generally putting the effort in.

A combination of a slight lack of attacking threat alongside a bit of mental weakness in defence, I suppose. No doubt that Hurst has always been reticent to change things too early on which probably indicates a lack of faith in the players' ability to enact any sort of a plan B as much as anything else.
Posted by: HertsGTFC, March 8, 2022, 9:49pm; Reply: 89
I can live with losing away, I’m eternally p1ssed off that we wait too long to make changes especially with a bench that contains 1 defender.

Still in touch but need a win on Saturday though.

7th at best this season, suspect we’ll end up in 8th 🤦‍♂️

That was an absorbing game to watch and a credit to both sides. Did we deserve to win? Probably just, and we did score, after all. Good luck for the rest of the season and remember, no one is going to want to play us based on our current form so we might do you favours yet
