With 60 mile an hour winds forecasted all day on Saturday what do you think of chances of the game going ahead?

If nothing else we could do with one of these going our way…

In all seriousness, according to the BBC the wind is forecast to be 63mph between 3pm and 5pm - that’s only 12mph below a category 1 hurricane. We’re far enough out for that to change, but should that kind of weather transpire, they’re no conditions for a football match, are they?

It's Grimsby, if games were called off when it's windy we'd only get about half of our games played in a season.

Where some clubs get crisp packets and carrier bags blowing across the pitch we get children who haven't been competently tethered and small cars.

Obvious lack of a plan B if the wind is blowing side to side.

You'd make a good GTFC manager.  ;)

The met office forecast for 3 pm Saturday is 35 mph winds with 56 mph gusts.

What’s the point of living on the East coast if we can’t cope with a strong breeze

Storm now has a name, and the current forecast is for 70mph winds come Saturday afternoon. That’s more than a bit gusty; in the world of health and safety in which we live it’s going to be touch and go if it ends up being that windy.

I think the only viable reason it could be called off would be if the ground was unsafe. Flapping advertising hoardings being a usual reason previously. Picko the sign writer may be quite busy today checking and double checking as much as possible

One thing is for sure, if it's a howling gale, it's likely to be a crappy game. I'd accept a scrappy last minute winner right now because I doubt we'll see much flowing football. I suppose we've got away with decent conditions at home for most of the season so far. Winter is coming...

If there is a light hanging from the Main Stand, who we gonna call?  :)

I remember a game against perhaps Doncaster, when their keeper kicked the ball from the Osmond end, which almost reached the halfway line, when the wind blew it back like a rocket and he had to make a save.

I remember us losing to Newcastle (in the Keegan era), in part due to a howling gale. Paul Reece threw the ball up to kick a clearance out of his hands, it blew back into his body and he picked it up again. They were awarded an indirect free-kick which they then smashed in through a crowd of players. Seem to think that was at the Osmond End.

That actually led to a goal I think. It was the game in the JPT Trophy (or whatever it was called at the time), they were the holders and filled the away end and part of The Main Stand and had more fans there that night than us. Their keeper took the goal kick and the wind sent it spiralling back towards him. A Donny defender tried to head it back to him but just succeeded in heading it over him and into the net.

Yeah. Paul Bolland missed in the shoot-out IIRC but the ref made him take it again as their keeper was off his line and he scored the retake.

Can only see it getting called off on Health and Safety grounds, as said above.

Don't recall a game ever getting called off because the wind would have made it a drab affair.  Only tends to be if it's unsafe and/or the surface won't let the ball roll naturally.

Yep remember it clearly. One of those weird goals that happens and you just shrug your shoulders as strangely, everyone saw it coming. That and poutons half-way line own goal are the weirdest goals I've seen at BP..

Highly unlikely the game will be anywhere near being called off as there is only a yellow warning issued for NE Lincs. The areas that have amber or red warnings issued are further north so there should be no issues apart from gusts at times.

It's looking grim in Grimsby tomorrow. Not only Northerly winds gusting 50 mph plus, but heavy rain forecast all day up to kick off & during the game.
If the game goes on chaps - heavy weather gear methinks will be the rig of the day.
Fingers crossed.

Thank you Les and the other lads who commented; I thought it might have been further back than that, but having looked at the potential games over the years at home to Donny, it must have been it and your memories are better than mine.

It might force them to play on the deck.

Reminds me of my only promotion in Sunday league in leafy Bucks at Lacey Green, Naphill only had to win to get promoted. We were 2-0 up at half time with the wind at our backs.  Their equaliser was lofted into the air as it was dropping into the box, you could see it swirling all over the place.  The usual reliable Rob went to volley it but the ball shimmied at the last second , hit his heel and went into our net.  In the dying embers of the game, we got a free quick just inside their half.  I was the last man and saw everyone had to the opposition's box.   As the wind whipped at my pasty white legs, trying to turn them blue, I thought, he's never gonna get the ball that far.  You would loft it ten yards it came straight back over your shoulder. 'Another season in league two, I thought" The aforementioned Rob ran up and slammed it as hard as he could.  At that moment, for a few seconds, the wind died.  The ball flew into the box at pace, took the slightest of touches and the onion bag rippled.  The gale started up again and after the surprise we celebrated.   Lacey Green, didn't even have chance to take the kick off.

I assume they’ve tried to repair it to no avail…

I’ve got 2 reels of black masking tape and some gorilla glue in my shed.
Give me 10 mins I’ll pop round and sort it.

Yeah, cos sending people on to the roof of the Findus Stand with 60mph winds is safe isn't it?

How can anyone argue the decision to call it off? 3000 people potentially sat below a structurally unsafe roof, the game would be worse than the already dreadful level we play at and we’re well out of form against an early promotion rival.

John Fenty would have sorted it. Stockwells and Pettits probably hiding out of the way in the bar

Means we have avoided defeat for once I suppose

Not quite true or fair He reduced the length of the ladders when they cut down the floodlight pylons and he could reach to change the bulbs with just one section of ladder

Ner - take the roofs off all the stands and have grounds like they do in Spain, Italy and America. Far cheaper.

Yes but some people have literally nothing else in their lives beyond going to the football so of course their day or evening is ruined when the game gets called off and have nothing else to do. It's unfortunate but playing in this won't serve anybody and since there has already been structural damage and winds only getting worse through the day the safety of fans comes before how much they want something to do on a weekend. The same people would be calling the club out for keeping the game on if debris fell and hurt somebody.

Must be perilous for you in this weather.
Up there  on your lofty perch.

Just maybe. There are people for whom one of their highlights  is getting out and meeting people is the match.

Your arrogance amazes me.

There was a red warning for strong wind yesterday. I'm surprised more games were not called off as a precaution for visiting teams and supporters.

With climate change causing more extreme weather, I think it would be a good idea to dismantle the upper Findus and use the seats to extend the lower tier and Main Stand. The ground capacity would be the same, but there should be a much better match atmosphere.

Can't watch the ships in the river from the Lower Findus if the game is dire.

A shame the game is off but it wouldn't have been much of a spectacle in these conditions.
