Lots of doom and gloom on here which some of it might be expected but not to this extent .We have not gone from world beaters to a scrap side in a few weeks.

Let's get behind the lads who might be recovering from injuries or illness we just don't know the full story.

Saying we should throw money at it to solve the problem is not the answer Hurst is in full charge of the budget and knows he can sign anyone he thinks might fit into the team, if more money is needed them he has been told they could find some for him.

So let's not forget we are still third from top and encourage the lads instead of calling them none of them play poorly or make mistakes on purpose.

Here's to a good win on Friday to put us back on track.

A good summary Pete. Like you I'm fed of the doom and gloom when we have had a good start as we have. The entire club was down and nearly out but like the proverbial phoenix, we are rising from a great depression.

We have a fair way to go and the road is long and winding, with ups and downs (as the last 3 league games). As Pete says now is the time to get behind the team and boost them up; not pull them down.

That's the problem we are kept in the dark over why certain players are not even on the bench .
I really think we should be kept in the loop more because this is why rumours and untruths start .

I think the problem is Pete that we probably weren't 'world beaters' at all, we just wanted to believe we were

The games against the top sides will determine if we were right or not

Grimsby Town have no God given right to walk this league, and have probably spent less, handed out more from player transfers this year to one man, while setting up a top 5 team.

Yes, we went top, and suddenly we are deemed world beaters, even with injuries then starting to pile up.

The system works with McAtee harassing back lines but we have no current similar type of player to do that job.

Souza is now being man marked and fouled on a regular timescale,  and the Shop and Taylor both look woefully isolated up top.

Waterfall is now blocked at every corner or free kick so that's been sussed as well.

Hurst will have to ensure that his defence becomes solid again, then get his players' confidence back again on the attack side.

Being shot shy does not help either - no one cares if an honest shot is saved but trying extra passes, then losing possession can be frustrating.

At some point, he will have to be brave enough to include Grant and Scannell, who both have what is needed on past history, but not yet this season.

So, Southend, will we be another charity case on Friday, or is it Day 1 of recover pride.??

My question - Could Harry Clifton do a McAtee role until he is fit again? He certainly has the running side to him.

This is where Hurst will earn his pay to turn the team fortunes around.

I agree to a point Pete. However, we’ve lost four on the bounce having struggled to cope without one, maybe two players because our alternatives are either too different or not good enough. That’s had a major impact on how the rest of the team are playing and will, for sure, have an impact on confidence and possibly how the crowd responds to the team.

What’s galling is that the gap in the squad was obvious to all and sundry.

Was it obvious to all and sundry?

3 weeks ago, the majority on here were talking about the strength on the bench. I, for one, thought we had decent cover in most positions.

Criticism is fine but don't rewrite history.

Why has every press conference for three months included the question regarding another striker then?

No doom and gloom from me . I made the decision not to let football results define my life along time ago .

Apologies if you were just referring to cover for Taylor. Most agreed with that.

I just can't fathom how the team that beat Wrexham (I was impressed with both sides) can struggle against Wealdstone, Aldershot and Kidderminster. After that game I thought that if we finished above them we would be champions. We still might.

Genuine question. Aside from a centre forward, where else do you think we need strengthening?

100% this. My concern at the time was that bringing in an outsider might upset the dynamic we had going, and I felt that unless there was a player available who was simply too good to turn down then we should keep our powder dry.

As it happens, injuries, Covid and suspension disrupted that dynamic anyway and things have turned to shít, at least for the moment. That has exposed the fragilities of the squad, but they weren’t blindingly obvious four weeks ago.

Certainly better left back cover, striker for sure and probably a younger version of Giles Coke.

As I’ve said on another thread, I think it’s dependent on the ongoing fitness of Grant, Wright and Scannell.

No doom and gloom from me, of course I’m a little disappointed of late but things have gone against us. We will be back to winning ways soon and I hope it starts again on Friday. UTM!!

I agree with this - if the fans were respected and kept in the loop as to why players were not available (possibly on the bench with minor injuries) - then adverse speculation may be avoided.
Otherwise, you are encouraged to believe that Town have suddenly slumped for no apparent reason (which is worrying) and no prospect of the permanently injured players ever playing again.
Would be good to have an update on this from the club.

Before the season started if I had thought by the middle of November we would be 3rd in the league and 3 points behind the top team then I would have been elated.

Exactly this... If we go the next 5 games unbeaten (atleast a couple of wins in that run) we will all hopefully be back to being more positive.

It sucks our run at the moment but looking at the table I'm happy as quoted here, we're 3rd.. My personal opinion think we should be aiming for a top 3 finish, so so far soo good.

Seeing as though we are going through our rough patch at the moment, may I try to lighten the mood a little?
As the festive season approaches quickly, I have put together a few words in Christmas carol form.
The first one is in the style of 'Once in Royal David's City,' Here goes.....
                                                                   .Once in Grimsby's holy city
                                                                    Lived a lowly sausage boy
He learned to mix the nitty gritty
                                                                    With his favourite sausage toy
Mrs Petit was the mother mild
Bringing up the sausage boy child.
He left home and went to London
Learnt his trade and made his name
But still in love with GTFC
                                                                    Returned home to us again
Bought the club with Mr S
Looks like all they want is the best.

And to finish, to the tune of 'ding dong merrily on high'......
                                                                    Ding dong merrily on high
                                                                    JS is our leader
                                                                    Bringeth better beer and pies
                                                                    He is a nicer feeder
Glor or or or or or or
or or or or or or
or or or or e or ia
                                                                    He aint no cockney geezer.

All the best and let's start a new run by getting behind the lads Friday night.

COME ON THE TOWN, roarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

"You what love,? there's a couple of blokes in white coats at the door."

It's exactly where he played first half and for a short time second half until Fox was subbed against Aldershot.. Not sure it's the answer. Think we need to play him back on the left and try Bapaga in the role. Harry was effective for us wider when we were winning games. Not ideal, but we just haven't got a direct replacement for McAtee..

Not against trying Bapaga but feel we are trying to put square pegs in round holes and as I said on another thread what we need as an alternative formation that we can just slip into when McAtee is unavailable or not playing particularly well.

PH made several statements in early season interviews that he wanted the team to be comfortable playing in a number of formations unfortunately, to date, we appear to be very reliant on one approach and maybe the return of Scannell and Grant from injury may offer us some further, and more successful, options.

Agree, another way is to play two up top, but we really haven't got that sufficient quality option either. Also, I think McAtee may be fulliy fit before either Scannell or Grant are. It would be nice to get those two back as I think their (match fit)  physicality may make life a lot tougher for opposing defences.. we look a bit lightweight in tight areas sometimes..
