Come on boys, let's get back to winning ways.

Starting XI - McKeown, Efete, Waterfall (c), Towler, Revan, Clifton, Khouri, Sousa, Hunt, Fox, Taylor.

Subs - Coke, John-Lewis, Bapaga, Longe-King, Crookes.

Your #GTFC team for today’s clash with Aldershot! Memo

Starting XI - McKeown, Efete, Waterfall (c), Towler, Revan, Clifton, Khouri, Sousa, Hunt, Fox, Taylor.

Subs - Coke, John-Lewis, Bapaga, Longe-King, Crookes.

Seems a strange line up to me, can't work out whos where in this formation people are today, maybe its just me

I thought it was 4-5-1, just assumed khouri would be out wide for some reason, hunt behind taylor

Theres definately going to be an idea behind it, Hurst doesnt just start a young player out the blue like that without there being a specific reason

Adventurous? 1 striker and 1 winger out of 10 outfield players.

I havent a clue on formation, Khouri been nowhere near the first time picture but we’ll see
Posted by: RonMariner, November 13, 2021, 2:33pm; Reply: 9
We have two attacking full backs in there. A strong midfield, Sousa and Taylor up front.

Looks promising to me. But then I know sod all.
Posted by: chaos33, November 13, 2021, 2:34pm; Reply: 10
That’s come out of nowhere but we’ll see. Surprised there isn’t a start for Bapaga as the midfield looks a bit overdone against a pretty poor opposition but it might account for Sears’ absence, using Efete and Revan to push on up the pitch and try to overload on both wings with Sousa and Clifton. Don’t know enough about Khouri to know what role he’s playing.

Well, if we can't win this, then that will say to me that we are not ruthless enough with the present squad to win the league.

They've lost all their home games to date and were behind in the abandoned one, so...

I mean in the top divisions, thats how alot of teams line up now with a row of 4 or 5 vague none specific midfielders/attackers and they all play in a much more dynamic way, but not sure thats possible at this level or that hurst has decided to try and turn us into man city within a week, but times ticking slowly and I thought id waste some time speculating with this post

I'm guessing Sousa playing the No.10 role, with Khouri and Clifton playing Left and Right Midfield

Its not been 'the same talented players' recently though has it. So many changes for injury , suspension, Hurst having to chop and change plus 'resting' players etc

I have no doubt that the team we saw a few matches in would have won the last three and would be well on top today.

Brilliant suggestion, I cant for the life of me work out why Hurst didn't break the law and play the covid players. Probably should just get rid of the medical staff and invite McAtee, crutches n all, to play 90 minute too!

Not sure if it needs a rocket or substitutions at half time, particularly left sided by the sounds of it.

It also turns out we had a very easy start to the season. And the games that didn't look easy (Wrexham and Stockport) came at the right time. Our team didn't look like a title winning one before the season kicked off and it doesn't now, no surprise really. The next five or so games will be telling as to whether we have an outside chance of the title or look like play offs at best.

Do you always nail everything you do every day of the week? Ever go for a round of golf and come away having had a bit of a stinker? Game of football on a Sunday morning where you couldn’t hit a barn door?
Get a sense of perspective. We’ve had a bit of a wobble the last few weeks but we could finish today top of the league with a second half goal.
Think about what the word SUPPORT means.

For me he needs to at least take Khouri off and bring Crookes on and give Revan a go as a winger
I'd like the see him take both Khouri and Revan off and bring in Crookes and Bapa

I'll be honest I don't think he'll do either though, I think he'll leave it and hope the two young lads sort themselves out in the 2nd half

Wow, if we lose this, when does Hurst’s position become untenable? If 4 defeats turns into, say 8, he’d have to go, obviously.

I’m hoping we turn this game around, but right now we’re poor.

Fox is off.  Sounded a dire game for him.  What's happened to the form of some of these players?  When Fox got his chance, he played a blinder. Last few games he's done nothing.  According to JT , Hunt should have pulled the trigger and he didn't .  Previously, he had the balls to go for an injury time screamer.

Fookin ell.  It was always going to be about setpieces against the more basic rough and ready sides.  Poor preparation.  We are as brittle as a rich tea biscuit.

We should be putting hat fulls against this sorry shower.  Instead we've turned it into their Cup Final.

This coupled with losing of late to those great footballing powerhouses of Kidderminster and Wealdstone is embarrasing and worrying.

He needs to do something to shift this slide and momentum.

Baffling that a team performing so well can suddenly fall off a cliff like this. To be fair, we played OK against Notts County and didn't deserve to lose, but the away performances have been very poor from what I've read.
Posted by: TheultimateMariner, November 13, 2021, 5:02pm; Reply: 201
I’ve been completely accepting up until the last 2 games, Kidderminster is a game we should have won, but it seemed as though our players expected a free win and didn’t really look too bothered, and although I’m not there today, it sounds as though the majority of the squad just aren’t interested. I can take little blips in form, but we have been atrocious recently! Surely we aren’t so reliant on Mcatee playing to keep us winning games? Admittedly he is a great player, but surely we are able to beat teams at the bottom end of the table, including Aldershot who haven’t  won a home game all season. We had an unbelievable start to the season, playing some great football, so where has that gone? Starting to look really worrying now considering our run of games coming up, something really needs to click with us

Getting too cocky so Hurst has reigned it in. He has a history as a streaky manager. We'll put together a good winning run, then falter for a while, then another good run.

Probably why he's only ever got a team promoted through the play offs. I think he likes doing it the hard way.

We are now paying for a lack of options up front.

This is a stinker of a result and typical GTFC. Any team in dire form, gets it back when we are in town.

Think we have already lost too many games to be title contenders, unless we go the rest of the season and only lose 3 or 4 more, and I can't see that happening

Dean Smith was relieved of his duties for 5 consecutive defeats (even though they had a few players injured).
Paul Hurst has suddenly 4 consecutive defeats behind him - most against much lower ranked teams than Grimsby.
This will test the owners of the club - as Town do seem to be in a downward trajectory as a collective - all of a sudden. Wouldn’t fancy playing Wrexham, Chesterfield, Borehamwood next week with confidence / ability so bad it seems.

The teams around us have been adding the odd player to their squads for the last month and payimg fees for them. Chesterfield just paid for a defender due to their injury problems. us nope not a sausage despite struggling for a left winger and a striker most of the season just hanging on hoping long term injuries get fit one day. Explain how this will “test the owners”?

I feel it’s the players who are being tested, some will come though some will be replaced when the best 11 is available or in January

The problem we have is that we only have a best 11 anyone after that doesn’t appear to be up to it for whatever reason.

Time to question every aspect of preparation for recent games. Something has gone wrong since the bus arrived at Wealdstone. Is it the training regime, selection, fitness management, tactics or poor substitutions? If Clifton can continue to battle why not others?

Martin Gritton and other co commentators can see our failings from early on in games but PH seems slow to change during the game. We are failing at the basics and lack 'game intelligence'

I've missed the last four games due to Covid but hope to see a return to high standards both on and off the pitch on Friday.

First step. Stop all player interviews and Inside Training vids. Instead, ask Liam to interview all coaches and fitness staff for their honest thoughts about how match/ squad preparation can be improved. All 'in house' and deleted when Hurst and Doig have seen them. It's gone quiet on the pitch and it's time for a candid exchange of views at the training ground.

Should have known better than thinking we were doing well. I have never known a club which seems to fall flat on its face all the time. Any good performances/results are an illusion to tempt us into thinking we can rely on the same to continue. We can't!
I can recall some other abysmal performances at Aldershot when both clubs were in the FL but this one tops them all.
Everyone has known the obvious since the summer. WE NEED A STRIKER. We are not going to win anything unless we score some goals. The management needs to tell us why the club has failed to sign someone. Honesty is needed. No good saying the right options are not available etc. There must be options out there that are better than what we have at the moment. Getting out of this league quickly has to be a priority or are we like Norwich? That is not going to bankrupt the club chasing success. Tell us please. I ran out of emotional energy last season in supporting a team that tested the patience of a saint. Another season like the last supporting this yo-yo of a club will kill me.

Explain how this will “test the owners”?

I feel it’s the players who are being tested, some will come though some will be replaced when the best 11 is available or in January

The problem we have is that we only have a best 11 anyone after that doesn’t appear to be up to it for whatever reason.

Our best 11 had bapaga in it though, since hes been back why havnt we just been playing the line up we were back at altrincham but with john lewis in place of mcatee

The khouri thing seems like absolute madness now, the whole plan today was

The wheels have come off in an extremely alarming way

Need two players in similiar to when we brought in neilson and hannah that season

Seems everybody in the world can see this except for Hurst.

This is very poor & there is so much to say, but I am loathe to jump on he band wagon - just yet.
Still, an unbelievable drop in results since McAtee's injury.

I suppose that the fact we've got so many young players in may have an effect. It's understandable that young players with few first team appearances under their belt can blow hot and cold and relying on a few of them to perform well is a bit of a risk. Hunt has dropped right off after starting so well, Bapaga had a slow start, came good but then dropped right off again and it sounds as though Towler struggled today. Revan has made a handful of appearances for us and that's pretty much all his first team experience. Khouri likewise. Sousa is a bit older but it's his first proper professional contract, I believe? He looked almost unplayable at times earlier in the season as well.

I'm guessing that not too many of the other clubs near the top are reliant on so many youngsters coming good.

“Clearly a little blip” says John Lewis…. That’s ok then I was getting worried for a minute.

Loved Hurst interview. what went wrong      "we weren't winning headers "   so what did he do to sort it?  nothing continued for another 45 mins not winning headers
He could see it, commentaters could see it, crowd could see it but he still did Flub all about it at half time.

Completely agree and add that it’s pretty much a new team compared to last season but on the pitch we need the players to start showing a bit of character I think.

The drop in form is very worrying and the obvious shortcomings in the squad have unbelievably  not been addressed, but the one thing that baffles me is the injury situation at the club, is Scannel having a leg transplant? Just what is wrong with him?
short of a major ACL injury what can possibly keep him out for this long, same applies  with Grant and now it seem Wright can manage 20 minutes a month before he is injured again, we must be wasting a fortune in wages for players that are not contributing to the club and if performances are going to fall off a cliff because one key player in McAtee is injured, it could turn into a very long winter.

This is what happens when you mouth off about winning the league after 6 games, and claiming that you are swapping league standings with your fiercest rivals from the league above...................learn to shut up and cross your fingers, we've seen it enough times over the years to not get too cocky too early. Ffsake.

He didn't and he wouldn't (Doig wasn't even ready to lie about it) but some crackpot on the Stockport site suggested him as a possibility and maybe it made he feel wanted and taller

Don't think that's the reason for the plunge in form tho'

Yeah it's irrelevant balderdash and he wasn't linked in any way apart from somebody mentioning his name on a forum as somebody they 'could get' if they threw enough money at it. Now some people seem to want to use it as an excuse to beat him. Utterly laughable

According to Wiki the most league games he has played in a season in the past 5 years is 15 so you shouldn't be expecting too much from him.

Performance has dropped because macatee drags everyone else along kicking and screaming to put in better performances by leading by example.
Just shows what little fighting spirit is in the team if one player has such a massive influence on the rest of the team.
We need a player with similar attributes to macatee ASAP to be signed,we can all see it.
In the past under the former regime, lack of funds would be rolled out as a reason we couldn't sign players.
Right now with vastly higher than expected income generated,we should and must delve into the kitty and get someone in.
Any dithering and we'll still be in this god forsaken League this time next year.THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW.

I ran out of emotional energy last season in supporting a team that tested the patience of a saint. Another season like the last supporting this yo-yo of a club will kill me.

Let's put things into perspective a little bit.
1. Have we fallen flat on our faces? No, we have lost our last 3 league games. Yes yesterday was an embarrassment. Wealdstone parked the bus and we are laking a player or 2 in the final 3rd to be able to break those types of teams down. Notts County we didnt deserve to loose, we played well, limited them to only 1 or 2 shots on goal, and didnt take the few chances we had. We more than matched them, but again we were lacking that little bit of extra quality in the final 3rd.

2. Yes we do need a good striker and yes we have known this since the summer, but they don't grow on trees, do they? We were in for Tshimanga & the price Boreham Wood had on him was aimed at championship teams. Chesterfield went all in and got him. Maybe we should have gone all in, maybe we did but he chose them over us? It's all well and good saying "there must be options out there better than what we have at the moment" but no matter how big a transfer fee or wages we offer, it's still down to the player to say yes. At the moment the only players we can sign are either free agents (not going to be match fit), Non-league players (nobody in our league is going to sell their best strikers to us are they?). Or loans, Hurst has already said we have been knocked back on several loan players. We need to try and push the boat out in Jan.

3. We are not going to have another season like last season are we? The squad we have now is head and shoulders above last season's squad, even without the extra striker we need. Last season's squad was a bunch of headless Sunday league chickens under the control of a mental blagging has been. If we had that squad this season we would be in the bottom 3 by now.

We are 15 games in, 3rd in the league have 29 points, won 9, drawn 2, lost 4, and scored 28 goals without a "star striker".

In 2015/2016 (the season we went up) After 15 games, we had won 6, drawn 7, and lost 2, and had 25 points with bogle and podge scoring for fun.

Have faith!!

We had no left side  missed Crookes and Bapaga  and no one dare shoot, we had 4 or 5 chances to shoot , a couple of c.ear chances for Hunt and Sousa but instead of shooting elected to play a poor final ball to try to shoot from 6 yards rather than 16. If yo don't shoot they won't score. Thought that's basic at any level. Also at this level when playing against set plays you need a goalkeeper who will come a claim the aerial ball instead of staying on the goalline.

North London Mariner- I used to be an optimist but have been let down too many times!

I understand what you are saying but if we had any credentials at all, we would not be losing to Aldershot. A good team grinds out results even when playing badly. We should have drawn at the very least.

Perhaps we were not as good as we thought in the early games. Last gasp winners in at least two games (Barnet and Woking) and we almost threw a three goal lead away v Altrincham.

It is crucial they stop the rot otherwise confidence will drain from the team. The manager needs to decide his best starting XI and stick with them, unless injuries/suspensions intervene. All the chopping and changing does not help. We have suffered for twenty years now. There is only so much you can take. I am absolutely desperate for the club to do well. I have followed them since 1957.  I want to tell people I support GTFC and be respected, rather than guffaws and sympathy. I would be happy with top half of L2 at the moment, That is not an unrealistic objective. But we are nowhere near it at the moment.

Star man. The most sensible post I've read today. We've lost 9 points and are still third. All teams have bad spells and I'd rather have ours now than in March. Time for McAtee to come back and new blood in January.

Last time we were down here, Crawley and Fleetwood both shelled out for quality players and both p1ssed the league. Crawley bought Matt Tubbs for £70,000, Sergio Torres for £100,000 and reputedly £ 275,000 for Richard Brodie. It payed off spectacularly by them winning the league, only losing three games along the way (one of those to us I believe) and getting to the F.A Cup 5th round and a tie at Old Trafford, raking in much more than they had shelled out along the way.

They went up from League 2 the following season and skirted with the League 1 play offs the following season before finishing 10th. They made a load more money when they sold a couple of players for around 2 million.

Fleetwood did very similar and of course signed Jamie Vardy for ( I think) £100,000. Whatever happened to him?

This was a decade ago they were paying these sorts of fees in this league, so it isn't something new. Chesterfield look to have invested wisely with Tshimanga already on 16 goals and the team starting to motor. Wrexham have invested too and starting to hit their straps. 11 goals in the last 2 games. We have managed 1 in 4. Stockport take the Bolton captain, which is pretty amazing really

Basically, you get what you pay for and if we want to compete in this league, we need to do what others are doing.

We must have made a pretty penny from gate receipts. Will we spend some of it on the squad is the burning question for me.

That my friend is all about being a FAN. Enjoy the good times, take the knocks on the chin, pick yourself up, and hey we're going to win the next match. Positive optimism.

Glass is always half full, getting promoted, are we? Of course, we are 3rd in the table, and reading the late July posts everybody was going to be happy if we were mid table by Christmas!

PS. My son asked how I felt about Saturday, tissue box empty was my answer; but now definite win against Southend, no problem as my glass is filling up, again.
