Good to see LJL getting his 14 back (his favourite players as a youngster were Thierry Henry and Terry Barwick)

Interesting that a few don't have one on their kit yet. I imagine Clifton will remain 15 and Battersby will be 13.

Taylor I imagine will end up with 9. Hopefully no outrageous numbers. Can't be doing with 2 being a right winger or something daft like that.

David Longe King number 16
Sousa number 18

I have no idea how old you are but under Nicky Law in 2004 we had at least one match where we had a centre back wearing 9 (Paul Warhurst) and the left back wearing 7 (Craig Armstrong) whilst our left winger wore 3 (Darren Barnard).

And the famous 4-4 at Chesterfield match in front of a 4,444 crowd we ended up with 7 & 9 as centre backs after Greg Young’s shoulder popped out the 2nd time and he had to go off injured.

I never quite understood how Warhurst was deemed 9 worthy. I'm sure Groves wore 11 and played at CB a lot. That's forgiven though because it's Paul Groves.

From memory both Livvo and Groves made very solid Division One centre halves, a reminder of just what good players they were. I think by that point Livvo had reverted to a fairly generic squad number like 12 or 14 though.

Didn't Warhurst play centre forward for a few years at a higher level  (IIRC), maybe thats how he claimed the no.9

Yeah, I think David Hirst & Mark Bright missed a good chunk of the 1992-93 season injured and Paul Warhurst (a centre-back to that point) filled the void and scored at rate of about a goal a game and earned an England cap as a striker. I seem to remember he played the 1993 FA Cup Final wearing number 9 (last season before squad numbers introduced) but playing as a centre-back as Hirst & Bright were both fit (and wore 5 & 10 respectively) and Sheff Wed had a few defenders injured.

He then joined Blackburn where he played mainly as a midfielder.

Did he? I know that he was called up to the squad once but I don't think he actually played did he?

Hendrie’s contract expired last Wednesday. Technically he’s no longer a Town employee.

We still missing a number 3 , 7 and 9 so at least a left back, another winger and striker.  Plus 17 and 20 not filled so could be another 5+ signings.

Hopefully starting tomorrow.

Is the first half going to be a bit rubbish then? I'm thinking 0-0 after extra time & Spain win 4-3 on penalties.

I think he misheard. Hurst was in talks with Dortmund over the transfer of Bellingham and the Germans wanted Clifton as a make weight in the deal, and Hurst was saying “Nein”.

Does it really matter what number is on the back of which players shirt, except for the  ref of course. Does a player with a No3 on his shirt play the left back role better than one with a No8? It's all trivial really as long as you the player performs then what the fu** does it matter?

Why don't we just give the players we have the numbers in sequence and then any additional signings the next number that's free? If we have 20 players, then give them 1-20. The next player would then get 21. I don't get leaving gaps, it doesn't make sense to an old foegy like me!

Also being an old fogey, it does make sense to me. At least the first 11 or 12 numbers. Keeping the numbers 7 and 9 free shows intent to sign a striker and a (wide) midfielder.

Having said that it does signal to others (competitors and potential targets) what you plan to do, so is probably not a good idea. Like having code names for operations that are linked to the operation/project (“Operation Normandy” wouldn’t have kept the Germans guessing as much as “Overlord”).

There was one English team that did that when squad numbers first came out. Not too sure who it was but I think it might have been Charlton. They had a Number One playing outfield too.

‘Twas indeed Charlton - Stuart Balmer was your man wearing #1.

A question Alan Buckley pondered more than most with his famous Dave Smith replacing Gallimore at left back switch.
