Pulls out of England squad due to injury we will just have to wait for a former mariner to appear in a major final

Damn... However, he has time on his side. No doubt in my mind that you'll only have to wait until the WC next year to see an ex-Mariner in a major tournament, he'll be no.1 by then.

If England win the thing Aaron Ramsdale will be a great pub quiz answer in 100 (or 2) years time.

I have Zhang Enhua (RIP) in mind but I don’t think he got any minutes in 2002 did he?

Neil Webb made one appearance at Italia 90, although he joined Town after his England career.  Six years later in fact, about six stone heavier too.

Johnny Scott 1958

Kirky sent me this:

Just a reminder to the posters that Johnny Scott appeared in the 1958 WC Finals in Sweden, so he was the first Mariner to appear at the WC Finals (Though of course Arthur Drewery was the sole committee member responsible for the England team selection in 1950 when England lost 1-0 to the USA.)

This video is quite poor ... but Scott gets a mention from the French commentator at about 4 mins 50 seconds in.

I was ten years old in 1958 and thought it was normal for Town to have a player at the world cup.  ;D

Wasn't Mike Cullen in there somewhere?

For some reason my Dad hated Mike Cullen, every match we went to he would give Cullen loads of stick, it was if he was the only player on the pitch.

Your Dad was not the only one. In spite of the fact that there was a trio of internationals down the right side for Town in Donovan, Scott and Cullen both Scott and Cullen took stick from some Town fans . Mainly it was for holding on to the ball too long and then losing it. But my theory nowadays in my dotage is that many fans were dockers and fishermen and if you spend your work time in hard and dangerous work and pay good money to see Wouldie’Wonders then you don’t want to see some little bloke in a striped shirt fartarsing with the ball doing “fancy Dan” stuff. You want to see action tearing through the opposition with pace and physical might.
