Going from a different thread, there has been mention of The Fishy maybe sponsoring a player next season.

It costs £475 plus VAT, a total of £570.

Just putting it out there to see who would be interested. If we get enough interest then we can sort something out.

I'll start it off by chucking £20 into the pot. Anyone else?

" And here we have Pen Penfras and Forza Ivano receiving a signed shirt from Sean Scannell"

We should get Matty P to sponsor a player, he can probably afford it now :P

Happy to throw in another £20.

Yep, I'll chuck in 20 quid or a bit more if needed.

On the condition that Filipe Noche can receive the signed shirt and all other posters can have seats close to the pitch in the Main Stand when it happens. Can Matt Green present his shirt?

I’d be up for that. We should though have a poll or a lucky dip to see which poster gets to present the shirt. Please let it be either FFS or WayneGTFC.

Maybe we can arrange for getyourfactsright to have the shirt in his garage in exchange for Robbie Keanes shirt that he's allegedly got which we can then gift to Macca.

I'm happy to chuck aa few quid in although probably not as much as you guys, but every little helps 👍

Would it be easy to set up a fundraising page and post it on here then once you have enough for 1 or even 2 players then get people to decide who?

From a small acorn........etc

Im getting good at this 'suggesting ways to raise money'

At this rate we could sponsor 2 or 3 players and or management.

Giles Coke if he re-signs might be a good shot.

And/or Hurst and Doig maybe?

It all goes in the same coffers if a first team player is sponsored or someone in the yoof team.

If we did that do we have to sign an affidavit not to criticise the player during the season ?

If, big IF, Giles Coke re-sign I reckon he could be the new Captain. He would be a good choice. Or like you say, a newbie, Louis Adlard.

But management could always be chosen too.

"A fantastic advertising opportunity for you with the sponsorship of the kit of your favourite GTFC player/management team member for the season. Each kit sponsorship includes programme, scoreboard and website advertisement and exposure each game. Kit sponsors will also be presented by a signed shirt by their selected player on the Blundell Park pitch at a game of their choice."

From all of the accoutrements that are included in the package, we could forego the programmes unless anyone specifically wanted them. The advertising and exposure at every game would be very useful for the Forum. It'd be great to see the Forum badge flashed across the big screen. The shirt, like previously mentioned, could be auctioned off for a good cause. Im sure if someone were to approach 1878 with our idea that we are not in it to benefit ourselves with the shirt, we may be able to get it signed by the owners, the management and ALL players. That would probably raise a lot more than just one players scribble on it.

Run a poll to select the player? My vote goes to Clifton as he is established, local, and best represents the passion and effort we want to see in all players.

I think the idea of approaching 1878 is a good one. It would be good if the shirt could be signed by the squad, auctioned off and given to the winner of the auction at the last game of the season.

If there is enough funds could we look to sponsor 2 players?

Okay, it looks like this could be a goer.

So, anyone who wants to contribute can send their money over to me. Via Paypal to lesbrechin@hotmail.com (remember to send to "someone you know" or "friends and family" as this incurs no charges.

I will post regular updates on here as to the running total and then when we reach the target we can contact the club and see how they want me to transfer the funds to them. I can also take bank transfer, my details are the same as ever but if you want to pay this way and don't know my details then just PM me and I will send them over to you.

Don’t want to be a pain and personally not bothered. I realise people will send different amounts.
But as the sponsor gets presented with a Town shirt from said player and two match tickets, perhaps a way of picking out who gets it.

The contributor gets issued a number for each £10 contributed.
So £50 would get 5 numbers. £20 would get 2 etc. The winning number drawn gets the shirt and tickets etc.

I would also be more than happy if it was given to a worthy fishy member.
Someone with a young son or daughter would benefit. You get the shirt presented on the pitch before a game of your choice.  My lad had two from Macca and loved it.

24 hours in and 2/3rds of a player sponsored.

We could wait until just before the new season kicks in so we know all the players who have signed or we could sponsor a current player, BUT until the start of the season we won't know for certain if any player is still with us. Those who Hurst doesn't want may either leave, go out on loan or be frozen out and not played all season.

I think we should be sensible and wait until things are a bit clearer

Fantastic Les.

The question is how do we decide who to sponsor?

Do we do it ASAP or wait until closer to the start of the season so we have a better idea of who is playing for us?

Do we do a series of polls, one each for defenders, midfielders and forwards, and then do  a winner takes all from the winners of each area?

Do we open it up to all members of the Fishy to vote, or just to those who have contributed financially?

Les,

My Nigerian mate is trying to send money to you. But it keeps getting rejected.
Apparently he needs the long number on the front of your debit card, the expire date and the three digit security number on the back. !!!
And to make it even quicker he needs to know your mother’s maiden name and the name of your first pet 😉

Is it possible to sponsor the manager rather than a player? just curious!

Money sent via paypal

Yes it can be a player or member of the Management team.

How about if we sponsor Hurst, as part of the package we ask him to wear a sew-on Fishy badge that he has to wear at all times. Interviews, photos, etc etc

Good afternoon Les.

I hope you’re well and keeping safe.

I have been forwarded your enquiry relating to the sponsorship of a player for the 2021/22 season. We would be more than happy to have you sponsor a player for the forthcoming season.

We always return to our sponsors from the previous season to see if they wish to maintain their sponsorship of their selected player.

You can either select one of the players who does not have a sponsor attached from the current contracted squad, or if a player signs who you would like to sponsor, you get in touch with me as soon as they’re announced and we can work something out. For your information, the current contracted players and management without a sponsor from last season are as follows:

Chris Doig
Ben Davies
George Williams
Ollie Battersby
Ira Jackson Jr
Filipe Morais
Lenell John-Lewis
Sam Russell

If you have any questions Les, please do not hesitate to e-mail me back and I will do my best to assist.

Kind Regards

Sam Strandt

The only one on there for me would be Lenny.
We know he's not the most gifted of goal scorers but for every minute of every game he gives his all and as fans that's all we ask for ..well the odd goal or 3 wouldn't go amiss obviously...

I agree completely - and he wasn't signed because he scores a hatful of goals anyway - he always gives his all and that is all we can ask.

It has to be one of the new pros, Adlard, Goundry, Khouri (if he signs) or Battersby (just earnt his second pro contract), as recognition of the sterling work Neil Woods and his team are doing. Otherwise feels like you won't get everyone to agree on who it should be and may as well just draw it out of a hat.

Completely agree. Lets see who Hurst brings in, and lets say we make a decision, at very latest, the end of July. We should have a pretty good idea who has signed, as the pre-season should be up and running by then.

If we collect enough money to sign 2 players, we can pick one as soon as we want, LJL is a good shout, and then wait for other signings before we commit to another player.

That list does not include the two new boys. Could be worth enquiring about Louis Adlard to see if he has been sponsored yet.

So many names being mentioned, why can we not leave it up to the club to decide who gets the sponsorship?  They will know who deserves it the most, we are never going to get a unanimous decision here.

I think we should do a fishy survey to see who likes polls and votes. But because we have to be inclusive we then do a poll and vote aswell, add up all the data and then after all of this realise the fishy can't decide.

I would be happy for one of the sponserships to go towards Shaun Pearson. Love or loathe the decision to re sign Shaun there is no denying this is a feel good signing. Shaun was and I believe still is Grimsby through and through. I could see his hurt as he was being paraded by Slade in front of the pontoon during his final game. What a great way to welcome him back than the Fishy sponser him for the season! UTMM!!

Well I donated without really caring who we sponsor. The money is going to GTFC and that will do for me.

As Les (as usual) has done all the hard work I am not going to criticise his decisions. If you don’t like what’s happening feel free to start a fund. (And if it benefits the club I’ll back it

I am not criticizing Les, I am just saying that as I put money into this fund, I would like to have some say in where it goes, at the very least a a poll ,and I'm sure some others would like that too.

But do you not think it would be fair that all the people who donated money should be given a chance to vote on who it should go to?  If some people are not bothered, then so be it,  If we have a vote it would probably end up being Sean anyway as people seem to be very happy to see him back at the club.  Bear in mind that we will be signing quite a few more players who may well be a candidate for the sponsorship too.

If you wait for us to make more signings though the earlier signings like SP will already have been snapped up and we could end up sponsoring someone with nowhere near the same pedigree as SP.

As I said before though, at this moment I've just enquired,  I wouldn't do anything definite before putting it up on here.

I would like to throw £20 in when I get paid at the end of the month. It would be great if we could sponsor two players. A first year pro and a new signing would be my pick.

Ben Fox seems a great character and Longe-King has potential to be a bit of a cult hero too.

I really support this point we want to help fill out the rosta of sponsorship rather than deter a business who wants to get their name out by association. Maybe one of the extended management team e.g is Dave Moore an option he's cool.

How far off are we from affording a second player Les?

Can you get a message to whoever updates the official website and ask them to update the First Team page. Its very confusing as to who is still contracted and who has gone. None of the new boys are on there, and there are still some of our loans showing.....ie Idris El Mizouni, Kyle Bennett and Joe Adams. More than half dont have photos, and only a few show who has sponsorship.

'ave a word in their shell-like.

Still a way off. £756.60 is the latest total. To sponsor 2 players would be £1140.

Tall one and a small one maybe ??

Okay, I have just emailed Sam Strandt to ask him to let me know which of the new signings are available to sponsor next season as well as the ones he told me before that were available. When I get a reply from him I will post the names on here and we shall have a quick vote as to who we would all like to sponsor. The current amount I hold is £756.60 which has been donated by the posters below. It is possible that I might have missed one or two coming in so if your name is not listed below and you have donated, then let me know how you sent over your money and I will double check.

I think after what could possibly be another 3 signings today, making it 7, or is it 8, I think we should make a decision soon on our first choice. To think Hurst said he was looking for about 10, any remaining signings might not arrive until nearer the start of the season.

The Irish winger we have just signed looks an exciting prospect...you know....Eric O'Sousa

I would be willing to dig deep again to provide more funding for a second player if others are also willing.

Just had a quick look back and it seems that your payment was saying "Pending" for some reason, in your Paypal account. Can you check to see if it was actually sent or is it still sat in there saying pending for some reason?

Just heard back from  Sam Strandt. Here is his message.

Quoted Text
Good afternoon Les.

Apologies for the delay, I was occupied all of yesterday until late evening with the new signings.

The following players are currently without a sponsor but as previously mentioned, those who sponsored players last season do have priority on their players and those whose selected player has departed (five from last season) will have priority on any new arrivals:

Chris Doig (Management)
Ben Davies (Management)
Giles Coke
George Williams
Ollie Battersby
Ira Jackson Jr
Filipe Morais
Lenell John-Lewis
Sam Russell (Management)

New Signings

John McAtee
Ryan Sears
Ben Fox
David Longe-King
Erico Sousa
Michee Efete
Ryan Taylor

If you would like to let me know which player is your preferred choice, I will make sure your interest is registered with the Commercial Manager for when last season’s sponsors have informed us with their decisions.

Kind Regards

Sam Strandt.

So, who do we prefer to sponsor?

Looks like 37 (or maybe 38 including Bristol Mariner) have donated so far - how about we all chip in another 7 quid each to get enough to sponsor the 2nd player? Les to check my math!
Posted by: WayneBurnettsJockstrap, June 23, 2021, 8:58pm; Reply: 199
The problem is with a random draw is do we include all the players who basically have no chance of playing for us or do we squeeze the numbers and only pick from those who are certs for a regular first team position.

My choices would be, in order and depending on availability, Sousa, Coke and Jackson Jnr
Posted by: toontown, June 23, 2021, 9:04pm; Reply: 200
A random draw that chose Morais and Williams would be a bit embarrassing lol

We could always have a random draw and those that don't like the result could demand another referendum  ;)

Wow. Another thing we at the Fishy should be proud of. Just need another £133 (who's going to give the odd £3?)

Maybe keep this going beyond payday Les. Might be a bit easier on the pocket for our sterling members, rather than asking for people to contribute when the end of the month finances are wearing thin.

Hopefully we can muster up the last 12% of the total in the next few weeks.

Right, we have now smashed the 2 player total. As well as the extra donations coming in, I have had a rather large anonymous donation that has pushed us well passed the £1140 needed.

We now have £1175.25 in the pot.

Just need to decide which 2 players we are going to sponsor now.

Well done to everyone who has contributed.

Les and everyone who contributed - Great job!

Not sure best way to decide - maybe one of existing players from your list (Coke would be my preference followed by LJL or IJJr) and one new player (do a draw?).

Les - I think you should also decide what to do with any overage e.g. donate to Brain Tumour Charity or GTST as you have put in a lot of work on this and other initiatives.

Just emailed Sam Strandt and got a reply straight away. He did previously mention that last season's sponsors have first pick this season, so if their player has left and they want to continuing sponsoring a player then they have first pick of the new signings.

I assume they have set a date for sponsors to express their interest for this season. This is the reply I have just had from him.

Evening Les.

Money received okay thanks.

The lastest total I now hold is £1235.25. I will wait to see if I hear from Sam Strandt over the weekend with a list of available players to sponsor. If I do not hear from him over the weekend I will contact him to see the best way about getting the money over to him as I don't really want to be sitting on other peoples money for too long. I could even send him the money for the 2 players and then we can choose who at a later date. The following people have donated. If you have and you don't see your name there, let me know as it is possible I might have missed one or two. We can then decide what to do with the excess money we have raised.

As long as the club benefit from any excess funds raised I dont mind where it goes. Some suggestions follow (and I like the last one)

Youth Development

The new Girls Development team

Buy a couple of those bricks

Bang it all on the GTFC Lottery. If we lose, they have the money. If we win, they have more money!

Sponsor a youth players kit - £160+vat

Or how about spreading the love? How about paying for a mascot package for a local kid who needs a bit of a break if they have been ill or in the news for something good?

MASCOT PACKAGES

Be a Mariners Mascot for the day, lead out the players and have your photograph taken with the team captains in the centre circle.

Full home or away replica kit

GTFC gift bag

3 Complimentary tickets for family or friends

Photo and feature in Match Programme

Meet the players prior to the game

Lead out the Mighty Mariners

Line up with Mighty Mariner and team captains for official photograph

Commemorative certificate

Cost - £160+vat

How good would THAT be for a little 'un?

Hi Sam,

Just a quick update for you. We have now raised the amazing total of £1235.25, enough to sponsor 2 players, plus have nearly £100 over. The extra money over we would like to donate to the GTFC YDA. As I don't really like sitting on other peoples money for too long, I would really like to get this money sent over to you as soon as possible and then when you let me know which players are available for sponsorship next season, we can choose the 2 players that we want to sponsor.

If you could let me know some bank details, then I will transfer the money over to you. Can I just send the full amount we have raised or does the extra for the YDA have to go into a different account.

Kind Regards

Les Brechin

May I suggest any £ spare donated to disabled supporters?

It was decided earlier that will we donate any overpayment to the Grimsby Town Youth Development Association.

After I had another hair-brained suggestion to raise money, on the back of someone suggesting buying Matty Pollock a leaving present, I'm very happy and surprised with how this has all panned out.

Well done to everyone who contributed, and thank you.

Well done Les as usual.

Question is, having made a rod for our own backs, do we do the same again NEXT season, as we will be amongst the list of people who have first dibs on the sponsorship of players?

I'd have definitely asked for Coke as the majority did but didn't mind who else we chose. As always well done and thanks Les

Hi Sam,

As expected the 2 players who got the most votes were Giles Coke and Ben Fox, so we would like to sponsor those 2 players for next season. Not sure how long the printing allows for but we would like it to read - Sponsored by "Fans from The Fishy Forum, The Independent GTFC fans site". If that is too long then just the first 5 words will do.

Can you let me know the next steps I need to take as to getting the funds over to you. As I mentioned previously, I currently hold £1275.25 and we would like the overpayment to go to the Grimsby Town YDA.

Kind Regards

Les

I have just received the bank details from Sam and have just transferred over the total amount we raised of £1275.25.

This will cover the sponsorship of the 2 players (Giles Coke and Ben Fox) and the extra of £135.25 I have asked to go to the YDA.

When I get some sort of receipt back from the club I will post it on here.

Thanks to everyone who donated, a brilliant effort by you all.

Just the matter of sorting out who gets the shirt presented by the players we sponsor.
If anyone knows of a worthy youngster  ( or in fact two ) I’m quite happy for them to have it.
Fisheyites or not.

Either that, or see if we can beg/plead with people at the club and try to get the whole squad to sign it and then auction them off with all monies raised going back to the YDA or the new girls teams

Not had any acknowledgement fron the club yet that the money was received, despite an email reminder this morning.

I'm popping down to the ground to get my ticket for McKeown's testimonial tomorrow lunch time, so if I don't hear anything by then I'll mention it.

I just want some sort of receipt so that I can post it on here to confirm that the money was sent.

Great job Les, thanks for this.

Re the shirts, I'd like to see them put up for auction and if we could get the whole team to sign them that would be great. Put the money back into the club for youth development etc

In terms of who should/could get a shirt presented to them, you've organised all this and got it over the line. You should have at least one of them presented to you.

I'm not overly fussed about having a shirt. It was WBJS who originally had the idea, I just collected all the money in.

What I was going to suggest is to just do a random draw of everyone who contributed and whoever comes up will get the shirt.

I wonder when the club will acknowledge our sponsorship efforts by updating the first team Web page, at least.

Its not like we have just given them a tenner, is it?

We know we have to wait until the first home game to see our logo in the programme.

Getting them signed and auctioned is A great idea to raise money for YDA. If that doesn't fruitate I'd happily let the two guys have them, but as Les said he's not to fused and his idea sums him up as a person and offer it as a prize draw for those who donated.

In the past when my lad was the recipient of shirts we got to chose the match to get them presented.
Package was two adult and one child ticket for main. Shirt presented pre-match  by player (about 30 mins before kick off)  and a couple of photos.   Presume it’s still something similar !!

Okay, I have had an email from Sam today and he said that we can choose any home game to have the shirts presented to us.

He has also said, if we want the shirts signed by all the players then he can do that as long as I give him at least a weeks notice. We could then maybe auction one or both off to raise money for the YDA.

I'm not overly fussed about being the one the shirt(s) is/are presented to but I will be there if that's what the majority of you think.

I would also suggest that Wayne Burnetts Jock Strap is the other person to be there, seeing as he had the idea in the first place.

What do we all think?

I was just asking him when would be the best game for him, for us to accept the shirts.

I'll bump this thread back to the top to see if he replies to it but if not then I'll be looking for someone else who would join me to receive the shirts.

Oi oi saveloy. I hadnt even noticed I had any private messages so I dont know why it had said I had read them. Then again when messages were flying all over when we did the fundraiser for Ollie it also showed that messages had been read when I hadnt. Probably a setting on my phone.

Any way, Dover, Yeovil or Notts County would be good for me, but preferably the latter.

Ive noticed on the Town website that they have uploaded all new photos for the players and several have their sponsors named underneath, but Coke and Fox and currently devoid of a sponsors name.

Also we need to do a bit of a write up about the Fishy as we will be mentioned, and logo shown, in the matchday programmes.

Okay, no problem. I ticked the flag button when I sent the PM and it told me that you had read them. That's why I thought you were ignoring me.  ;D

Anyway, Notts County game sounds good to me. I'll email Sam and let him know. That'll give him plenty of time to get the shirts fully signed by the squad. I've sent you a PM with my mobile number so that you can give me a ring a day or two before if that's okay.

If for any reason, which I very much doubt, we fail to raise enough to sponsor a player next season, there are several other avenues where any raised funds could be allocated to.

Righteo, the shirt presentations have been arranged for this coming Saturday prior to the Notts County game. I have also arranged for the 2 shirts to be signed by the entire team and we can auction them off afterwards to raise funds for the YDA.

As we have sponsored 2 players we will get 4 free tickets for The Main Stand.

Unfortunately due to personal reasons, Wayneburnettsjockstrap in unable to attend which means that I have 3 tickets available which anyone who has donated to the cause can use.

I'm just going to throw it out there and see if anyone wishes to nominate someone to come. I have listed the people who have donated below. If nobody want to nominate anyone I could just choose 3 people at random, but I am aware that there will obviously be some exiles who have donated who won't be there on Saturday.

Seeing as my right hand (my son, who's a town supporting Yorkie) isn't coming due to contracting covid-19, if no one else puts their name in the hat I would step forward but only if a more deserving soul isn't found.

I do hope someone takes my place on Saturday to represent the Fishy.

Sadly I lost my Dad a few days ago and am in no fit state at the moment.

Very sorry to hear that WBJ. It’s a tough time and you need time to yourself to grieve, but you should also know that there’s a great support network in the Fishy if you need to reach out. Rest assured, your place on Saturday will be covered.

I've already passed on my condolences to WBJS in a PM. I didn't think it my place to mention the exact details of why he could attend though.

I did say to him, and this will be of no consolation now, but just remember the good times, as I'm sure there will be many. I lost my Dad to Leukemia (which was a death sentence back in the late '60's) when I was only 3 years old, so apart from a few old black & white photos, I have no real memory of him.

Thankyou for your messages. He was in his 90s which was a very good age for our family but he went sooner was expected.
The reason I pulled out was, ironically, because of his links to GTFC and Blundell Park. He was personally scouted by the late great Bill Shankly when he played for the YMCA team. He signed for GTFC but because his boss at his company flatly refused him time off to play on a Saturday, he never got to play for the first team. We later found out that his boss was a staunch Scunny fan. He made several appearances for the 2nd team and played in a few triallist matches to make up the numbers.
Because he never played for the first team there has never been any mention of him in any of the books about GTFC over the years.

This actually bought a tear to my eye . As did WBJS post . You just never know what people are going through or have gone through in their lives . 😥

You wouldn't believe how often he told the story, even when he met strangers. He was very proud of that time of his life, as well he should be. Shankly only signed a handful of players in his 2 years here.

But just 2 years later he had to have cartlidge removed from both knees which stopped him playing football completely.

As far as we are concerned there has never been a bigger 'What if...' scenario.

No I'm fine. Its been something that seems to have plagued male members of the family. His dad had problems, and I have aches and pains in mine. He was very sporty in his younger days so was probably just wear and tear brought on early.

Well, Aussie Mariner, Lukeo and myself were presented with the 2 shirts before the game today. As asked for, both shirts have been signed by the full squad (there are 26 signatures on each shirt).

Highlight of the afternoon was Aussie Mariner nutmegging Shaun Pearson on the pitch.  :)

Sometime tomorrow I will get pictures of the shirts and post them on here and we can then sell them on Ebay to raise funds for the YDA. I've never sold anything on Ebay before but I'm sure it wont be too hard to start to.

Thanks to Aussie Mariner for the pre-match pint too.

You’re very welcome Les, thanks for letting me take part. Nice to meet you both. I hope you got back to Somerset safely Lukeo.

As regards the nutmeg, what can I say? I can now tell my grandkids I once kicked a ball on the hallowed turf!

Let's hope they raise a decent amount at auction.

I've put them on a 10 day listing and if anyone local wins the bid then they can collect from me in person or I can take them to a match.

Just been looking at the GTFC website. I noticed on the first team it has our Forum name on Coke and Fox, but it just reads 'The Fishy'. Should it not ,ideally, have 'The Fishy Forum'?

Also the uptake of player sponsorship this season is fantastic. Last season there were 4 players who were sponsored. This season there are only Battersby (out on loan), Crocombe, Scannell, Grant, Spokes, Braithwaite (youth player) and Gibson (out on loan) who are not sponsored. At total of 23 players sponsored this season. Thats pretty good going to be honest. Thats over 13k in the coffers.

Just received payment from Ebay.

After the commision they took we raised a total of £200.67 which I will donate to GTFC YDA.

I have just sent Sam an email to find out the best way to get this money to them.
