Jeez do we need a win tonight:

TOWN: McKeown, Hendrie, Hewitt, Menayese, Clifton, Morais, Matete, Coke, Lamy, John-Lewis, Hanson.

Subs: Battersby, Waterfall, Rose, Adams, Jackson Jr, Green, Payne.

At least there's some consistency in selection which has been my major bug bear. Making 4 and 5 changes a game is a disaster

If there are prem clubs after our youth why can't we have them on the bench, 'if they're good enough' comes to mind except for the Hurst factor.

Come on Town let's nick it right at the end.
Posted by: WayneBurnettsJockstrap, March 17, 2021, 7:51pm; Reply: 66
I think I have worked out what the problem is.

All of our attempts on goal (all the blocked ones) have been left footed shots.

Left footers are in the minority generally so there are more right footed players to block.

Maybe if we had more right footers in the team we may be able to get more shots away.

Just trying to think of another excuse!

Well we might not be losing but I can't see a goal coming for us. No midfield, 10/11 in our half defending. Tranmere play as if they need the points and we play as owt'll do. They look like professionals and we look like Sunday league.

Well....we sort of are....hardly been in their half, dont think our strikers have touched the ball in their box, LJL has hardly touched the ball at all....midfield are weaker in every position and they have been camped in our half.

We look very second best....as yet it hasnt quite fallen for them in our box but on that display and letting them have that much time at our end of the pitch it's only a matter of time.

We will be ready to start blowing within 10mins of restart and they already looked quicker and sharper.

Very happy to survive without  conceding there but without some retained possession the pressure is going to build to breaking point.

I would take the shop off, we arent winning any physical battles in the current approach, put Jackson in who is little bit sharper into feet.

tranmere are about the best side i've seen so far, on that 45 minutes and we are doing well to hold them. coke and matete are looking ineffective coz they're battling against 3 good players in there. neither of our wide men are doing anything productive.morais is quiet, for about the 3rd or 4th game on the trot whilst lamy seems to be bamboozling himself half the time. Hanson and the shop up front are similarly outnumbered.Back 4 doing really well, again for the 3rd or 4th game on the trot.We don't look so fragile and don't like we will concede whenever they have an attack.
Wonder if Hurst will do the old Italian thing of trying to keep it tight for the third quarter and then go for it. I'd be looking at getting Ira on for Morais, just because he's a bit quicker and more of a presence (plus he's the only forward who's scored more than 1 goal all season!)
2 months ago we'd have been pleased with how we've done ,but it's too late for that now

Do you really expect us to come out all guns blazing, bearing in mind they tanked us 5-0 away and given our season long track record of shipping goals left, right and centre. Realistically, we've got to try and stay in games as long as possible and hope we can nick something.

Have you ever seen Sam Allardyce go into any club he's been brought in to keep up and go out all guns blazing?

Fillipe noceed it on the head there. Pretty much all their players manage to control the ball properly first time and are comfortable with it at their feet. They always have someone available to pass to wether thats 10 yards or 30 yards. They are simply better players than most of ours.   Unfortunately, But still 0-0 so you never know we could snatch it, I mean it has been known to snow in the sahara

I didn't say we should go gung ho but at least have a go FFS, drawing games or hoping to nick a goal isn't good enough, I'd rather we try to be a bit more potent but we are giving them naff all to think about, it's like a training session for Tranmere!!.

Because they were shiite.remember starting the match with only 8 players as green, bennett and preston starting? Remember having macca and russell in goal giving away a goal a game? Remember gibson up front with green? Remember taylor, rose and morton in central midfield? Remember pollock  and waterfall bring disorganised and outpaced?

'Replace' ?

Most of them were underperforming loanees who only ended up here because Holloway's scouting network consisted of ringing up his mates and going 'got any players you can lend me', and they got recalled when he copulated off. Who did we lose? Preston (not very good), Gomis (shite), Morton (shite), Taylor (shite), Edwards (could be decent but often with very little end product). Tilley's probably the only player we had any say in keeping and he's clearly someone who never settled up here and wanted to go back down south.

I think even before last night's results most of us felt we were down . Last night was another nail in the coffin.

This team also seems to have accepted their fate. Most know they won't be here next season so probably not overly bothered. We look like we are going through the motions now  Not a team fighting for our lives.

The change of manager and players has had no impact.
To be honest even if this gap was 3 or 4 PTS it's hard to see hoe we would escape. Other teams are picking up wins here and to there. Hard to see where a Town win will come from.

Yes, we were 22nd in the league when Hurst joined, and most of our wins were a result of individual performances by players who are now injured (Scannell, Wright, Pollock - still our top scorer ffs), had already departed (Windsor), or copulated off along with Holloway (Tilley, Edwards).

This idea you keep preaching that somehow we had a squad capable of keeping us in the league when Holloway left and Hurst joined is nonsense. We'd lost 5 of the last 7 when Holloway copulated off and the side had relegation written all over it. Constantly slagging off Hurst because he's not somehow managed to sign an entire new team of competent players in those circumstances is pinning the blame on the wrong target. Holloway, Fenty and the rest of the board are to blame - letting players like Vernam, Hessenthaler, Clarke and Davis leave on free transfers and telling prospective players we were going to potentially dock their wages with covid clauses when no other team were bothering with them. Those decisions were terminal and entirely on Holloway and the board.

In the end was a tough ask today and we should have taken points from previous games that were there for the taking. Plenty of effort against a side with good players but as always lacking that bit of quality in their box, lack of use of subs again but I guess what did we even have on the bench that would have made a difference. We seem to have a more settled side, probably too little, too late though.

Players tried hard but we just don’t have the quality and I’d suggest “us shape” didn’t help.

This is still a side short of quality, JT made the point about three clean sheets which I guess is fair but once again a keeper will have a bus ride home after an easy night.

There is no way we’re getting out of this.

Its ok singling The Shop out for missing chances- all strikers do inc players like Kane, Salah etc. The difference is they get 4 or 5 chances every game and only need to score one to keep people happy, I think Shop has had 4 decent chances over 5 games and scored one. No worse than any other striker generally (Note he is exactly the sort of player we will need in the conference next season). We just lack ambition going forward. Thought Jackson did well from the bench, and our current back 4 look really good at the moment.

Hurst’s comments a few weeks back were that we first needed to start keeping clean sheets, as Stevenage had done, and build up from there so albeit a bit late maybe we are starting to get there.

If we got this result when the game was originally planned to take place we probably would have been delighted with a point and half decent performance. Trouble is we are allowing the gap to get wider each week and games are starting to run out but hopefully a win at Mansfield on Saturday and we can all suffer for a bit longer before the inevitable happens.

It's fine margins again. Should have won at Carlisle and had 2 great opportunities to pick up wins against Colchester and Tranmere. 1 late goal conceded and 2 good chances missed and what could have been 9 points is 3.

I doubt Barrow are playing any better than we are but are getting those crucial goals at the right time.

We now need to turn these tight games into wins as Stevenage did. I think Hurst has done as good as anyone could have expected given what he walked into. I'm not his biggest fan but I think some of the stuff posted about him tonight is out of order.

We looked a team tonight. Not a great team but a team nonetheless.

I’m no Hurst fan but why are Tranmere knackered? No difference between playing Sat/Tues or Sun/ Wed and yeah they were in a final on Sunday but are pushing for automatic promotion so can’t believe they are not “up” for every game at present.

The result is everything in our position but tonight was hardly a walkover fixture, none are for us, and our season was perfectly summed up last night when Barrow scored twice and not sure either was from one of their shots!!

When will you and others on here realise that you can't always get what you want?  I would hazard a guess that none of Pauls top 10 picks are in our squad now.  Players don't jump for joy and say, "Whoopee, Grimsby Town want me", especially the good players available which no doubt have received better offers than we presented to them.  There are multiple reasons why players wouldn't want to come here, we just have to accept that, and take what we can get.  Do you not understand that?

My thanks to all those who corrected me about shots on target last night. Stats say 2 but they came that far apart I must have forgot about them. On the subject of goals on target in the last 630 mins ( 7games) we have managed 12, 1 shot per 52 mins.

This fact sums up why we are looking into the trap door of the NL.

Eastwood - shocking goalkeeper
Menayese - shocking centre back
Matete - shocking central midfielder
Coke - shocking defensive midfielder
Harbegham - shocking left back
Lamy - shocking winger

You talk (and you're not alone in this) as if no team has ever got out of a relegation battle and signed players while they were near the bottom of the league to help them stay up. It's part of a manager's job to get recruitment right, and to set up an effective team with what you've got.

I completely understand that no Manager has a 100% success rate with signings. Even the best sign some stinkers. But in our situation there was little margin for error, and judging by the points return (which is all that matters) we've actually become a worse team than the one Holloway left us with. Whether that's due to the players signed or the management of the team, that lies with the Manager unfortunately.

I didn't think Hurst was a bad appointment at all. I posted on here that I thought he'd see us safe (especially bearing in mind we weren't even in the bottom 2 when he arrived) and just had reservations about it as a long term appointment. But he's underperformed massively so far and I'm quite surprised how so many people dont apportion any blame whatsoever to him. We don't have to completely blame PH, that's not what I'm saying, but surely he doesnt get a free ride just because we were 22nd when he arrived. Other managers of other clubs in past seasons have signed players and got out of trouble, it just sounds a bit like blind faith saying he had no chance of keeping us up or signing any good players.
