Course there's still hope. There are still over 20 games to go and we only need to finish 1 point above the bottom 2.

Scunny are still well in it - I don't think their victory over us should be used as a barometer for their season.  Lose tonight and they'll have missed the chance to build momentum.  If we could put two wins together - a dream right now, I know - we'd be ahead of all the relegation candidates.

Stevenage gained a point on us but other than that guess results went in our favour

We need to make sure though that they don't gain any more points on us come Saturday

Stevenage get a point  but not a bad night for us in all.

Scunny look to have turned a corner and will be a lot more confident after 2 wins and 2 clean sheets.

On the other hand Port Vale, despite tonking us, are still struggling to put together any consistent form. In truth thinks between the current bottom four but there is normally one side that slides down the league.

Presently though it’s mainly just us & Stevenage & Southend who struggle to score goals so put that right and we have a shout.

And they've boosted their goal difference too which could be well  worth the equivalent of another point if they get sucked back in to mix between now and May

Looks like a mini-league of 4 we need to concentrate on in the short term (Harrogate are on 27 points)
Assuming we can get a bit of momentum with our new signings and PH gets “us” shape etc. then I’m still trying to look on the positive side (a bit!)
Shows how big the Barrow game potentially is, so probably good to have a bit more time to prepare and gel

Listened to the Scunny game tonight, Port Vale offered very little.
First half Scunny sounded decent, 2-0 up, took the foot off the gas and just defended the 18 yd line against a very one dimensional sounding Vale.

Scunny have won 2 of their winnable games in a week but have to play again Friday.
We have lost our "winnable" games.

Hopefully Payne will give plus a bit of a boost in what is now a must win game on Saturday

Said about ten days ago that we won’t be out of the mire until late March. Apart from Sarfend, the others have games in hand so we could still fall further behind while that plays itself out. We’ve got a few new players in, but nothing like the quantity we need and not great quality either, then there’ll be bedding in time while a bed team takes its shape.

Several more dark weeks ahead of us. In WWII terms we’re still in Winter 1940-41. Alamein is a long way off. We need Scunny to go off and open up a new front 😆.

Colchester could be a side that suddenly finds itself in trouble as I believe they moved on most of their best players, because of COVID income reduction, & if they lose tonight a big loss in confidence, hopefully.

It's crazy what a few good results can do, I'd say some scunny fans will be looking up the table rather than down now. We need to get winning so.e games soon to avoid being one of 4 or 5 teams that will be cut adrift at some point very soon
Posted by: ginnywings, January 29, 2021, 11:21pm; Reply: 50
Suddenly they are comfortable mid table. It can happen that quickly.
Posted by: RonMariner, January 29, 2021, 11:25pm; Reply: 51
Scunny now 11 points clear of the drop zone, and only 6 points off a play off place.

That is sickening, but does demonstrate how you can climb the table if you string together a few wins.

With the new players bedded in and others returning to fitness we could just as easily go on a run.

But we do need a string of wins. The odd win and draw here and there won't do it for us.

we are bottom because we are shiite, and we continue to be pretty shiite , because the negatives are the same as they have been for the last few months.
we don't create, we don't take our chances, too many players are a disaster waiting to happen and we always concede ,no matter how few chances the opposition have.
all the other teams pick up points here and there.

In boxing terms we had a very bad round tonight.  Not a KO though.  We are very poor, bottom but have a good manager and a new team.

Take your successes where you can:  Barrow did not win and Hull v Lincoln had 23 shots (only 1 on target).

The past this season is truly dreadful. With Runaway we were absolutely doomed.  The current is also poor.

We are a different Club from top to bottom.

We have new owners, a new (proven) manager, a new team and hope for the remainder of the season. A win or two will bring confidence.

Be positive.

If we are still in this position with 9 games to go, then yeah, start to panic.

Said something similar in a post at the weekend. In reality there is nothing much between any of the teams in this league but the one factor we haven’t had all season is any confidence, get a couple of wins and things may change dramatically. On the other hand.........

Still some hope but need those two wins in February.

Except us. Who cant beat anyone and dont look like doing so, just being realistic. Ive got no hope, yeah we cpuld win saturday Barrow/ Southend may lose and we be out the bottom 2. But i just cant feel it. Even in my heart

Southend's win tonight put our dismal failure to dispatch Newport's 10 men on Saturday into perspective.

Sorry, but I just don't see us turning this round. A few weeks ago we could have gone above Scunny by beating them. Weekend before last we could have gone above Stevenage by beating them.  On Saturday. They are both now waiving at us from the back of car as it races away.

We have had  so many crunch games recently and haven't won any of them. I think we have used up our nine lives and must start beating decent teams now, lots of them. I don't see it happening.

As I said Barrow not playing ( and not winning) is a small mercy.

What I did not see is Salford beating Cambridge ( who are top) 4-1.  Salford are 20 points ahead of us with a game in hand and a vastly superior goal difference.  How did they ever get so far ahead??

Maybe the fact that we have 2 wins in the last 21 games has something to do with it?

I can guarantee with absolute certainty that you were saying the same thing when Jolley came in with 11 games left and no transfer window to change much.

Save your sanity mate and just stay philosophical until it's mathematically certain one way or t'other.

We were not bottom or even in the drop zone with 11 games to go were we? We still had a small, though diminishing, points cushion.

Today we are rock bottom, with no games in hand over anyone, and no goal diff advantage, and all of our rivals are in in better form than us. That is a very different scenario.

But we hadn't won a game for was it 23 or 24 matches or so? We couldn't bring in any new players and we had 8 less games to make a difference.

Thing is, we see things differently, and we are not down until or unless it happens, which is a long way off yet.

Yes, 12 under Slade and 3 under the interim manager I think.

But we never dropped into the relegation spots at any time in the season, so our destiny was always in our own hands and it was the likes of Barnet and Chesterfield that needed to make up ground.  As we now increasingly need to do.

Look, I get it. There are 19 games left. That is a great deal of points to play for. My problem is that hoping we start winning is just that . A hope. The reality of the results we have seen since the start of the year do not support an optimistic view.

We played well for 45 minutes on Saturday, but lost against 10 men, 10 men in a chronically out of form side that lost to Southend a few days later.

So I have seen nothing to suggest the much desired winning run is around the corner.

Now Saturday is another day. Let's see.  If we win that one, then that might be grounds for more optimism.

I am simply basing my view on what has happened, rather than what I hope will happen. Until I see a change in fortune I must stick with my current view which is, I am gutted to say, that we are going down.

Because their owners sacked a reasonably successful manager. Fenty backed hopeless oloway all the way down the league

That started when oloway got the job, we just didn't see. Specsavers ran out of a certain shade of glasses.

Southend have just taken 4 points and had two clean sheets away to Newport and Cambridge. That is pretty good form. Catching them will not be easy. Stevenage are 8 points clear if us. Barrow are above us with 2 games in hand.

Our task is huge s and seems to get bigger every week.

Southend are definitely improving again.  Their next four fixtures look quite difficult but it doesn't matter who you play, it's about hitting form at the right time.

Barrow's fixtures are also difficult, but they have two games in hand.

If we lose the next 2 games we'll be cut off from the pack and I worry about our team's ability to overcome the mental challenge.

That is a very very good point for Southend away to the league leaders. Ominous. Hard to take any comfort from that.

The BBC stats show:

Southend:
13 shots at goal (none on target)
10 corners

Stevenage:
17 shots at goal (3 on target)
7 corners

Between them they only got 1 point away from home, but they are both trying hard based on the above stats.

Agreed. If, and it's a big if, we start winning, we may see a few teams below both us and Southend come the end of the season.

It doesn't make for pretty viewing right now though.

Agreed. We must start winning very soon.

Our next three games are against Exeter, Crawley and Harrogate. I don't expect much from the trip to Exeter, but both Crawley and Harrogate are in only moderate form. I think we need to look to winning both of those to start the comeback.

Six points from the next three games would I think give us real momentum.  Even that might not get us out for the bottom two though.   If we come away with less than 3 points from these three games we will be well adrift at the bottom.

With virtually a new starting eleven assembled, I still think it's too early to make assumptions on the new players' mental fortitude, and assume we'll lose the next two games too. This extended break due to the recent postponement has come at a good time for us. Time for one or two to recover from injury, time for new players to bed in, time enough for Hurst to draw a line under the first part of the season and treat the remaining games as a completely separate second part of the season. Win one, lose one until the end of the season seems a tall order having experienced what we have since September, but these players haven't been through that and are definitely an upgrade on what went on before this welcome break..

Been keeping my eye on Colchester for a while. There's always one team that drop like a stone toward the end of the season and they seem to be it at the moment, although there are plenty of games to go yet. Port Vale have hit another sticky patch too.

Some of the teams around the bottom end 2 months ago, are now in good form and have moved well up the table. Things can change quickly with 2 or 3 wins.

3 points at Crawley would be most welcome.

Me too Ginny and I mentioned Colchester a few weeks back in a post as a team who may struggle. Not scoring many goals and I think their win against us is the only one they’ve had in a while but not certain on that. Seem to recall at the start of the season Colchester’s Chairman was speaking from the same viewpoint as Day and they released most of their better players. Be good to get another team down in the mix.

Still think it’s 2 from the bottom 3 to go down, even if someone else goes on a very poor run the bottom  3 are not going to win more then 1 out of every 3 games.

Well we can’t complain if we don’t get out of this.

Plenty of time for our new players and injured to get to know each other.
Probably the best manager out of any of the bottom three.
Nearly out of February and still well in the hunt.

Think we’ll bo ok 😀

Jolley has escaped the drop before though.

Confidence is rightly seen as a key quality in football.  Look at Liverpool in the Prem recently.

However, hope is also critical.  Seeing your 2 rivals lose at home gives you a massive boost.  Christ, I hope so!!

Feel for their fans after reading that. To finally get promoted to the league and then face the prospect of going back down without seeing your team play is harsh to say the least. Having said that I’d rather it was then than us and I begrudge my taxes being used to put their players on furlough.

Jolley didn't get us out the excrement, we we're lucky with penalties, let's be honest, I thought he was clueless and couldn't handle the pressure at all, thus his stupid out burst..

We did get those penalties but the main reason we were getting them is that we were getting men into the box. Something which did not happen with Slade.

You say that, but Harry Cardwell wasn't even in the box when he tripped himself up and fell into the penalty area and was given a penalty at Swindon.

I have to agree with that one - it was very strange - but at least he was near to the box.

And the way Town played in those 10 games, thanks to Jolley, they deserved some luck

I can’t see Colchester being in the mix. Whilst I believe we’ll stay up they’d have to be taken over by three of the four sides below them (Stevenage will probably pass them, I admit) and that doesn’t look likely even with their dismal run of form.

A great day of results for us yesterday. Loads of games left and loads of points to play for. Just need to ignite our season now with this new team, and start stringing some results together.

No way is this season over, we’ve got a very exciting time ahead of us, and we need to realise that there’s enjoyment to be had from clawing out of this mess that Holloway got us into.

Hold on tight and keep believing

Not going to be easy to overtake Southend. They have been picking up points regularly since they beat us in December.

I think I will go crazy fretting over every game Barrow and Southend play, in addition to our own.

I am assuming that to stay up we need 50 points. Not guaranteed but teams with 50 points very rarely go down.

We need another 26 points. That's 8 wins 2 draws and 8 defeats from our remaining 18 games.

Personally I don't see Southend going down.

We need to close the gap to Colchester and Stevenage.

9 points adrift of Colchester, but I can't see FGR slipping up twice in a week. I would expect them to beat Colchester at the weekend. So a win for us would leave us 6 points adrift with a game in hand. Not impossible by any means. Stevenage are a point further away, but we do have 3 games in hand over them.  Again, not impossible to close that gap.

But all of this is pie in the sky unless we start winning consistently. We need to do what Scunts did. Win 4 on the bounce. Then the entire picture changes dramatically.

If we win on Saturday, I'd say any team that needs around a point or more per game to get to 50 points will be looking over their shoulder. That's nine teams including us right up to Scunny in 16th. Any team in the bottom half can easily have a horrendous run. Oldham and Port Vale, no win in three, Mansfield and Colchester no win in five and thirteen respectively..

Our "new" team that is just starting to get to know each other has won one lost one. That's 1.5 points per game. Replicating that would take us to 51 points..

Newport v Stevenage
FGR v Colchester.

Let's hope Newport pull their heads out of their arses and prove they can beat someone other than us for a change.

FGR bottled it against Southend so need to get back to form against Colchester.

If results go our way today, given the games in hand situation, the maths might well change from  any 2 from 3, to any 2 from 5 to go down.

Of course it all means intercourse all if we lose.

In February Southend won at both Newport and FGR and drew at Cambridge. They are on their way to safety and already show the kind of form and consistency that we are nowhere close to.

For me, Southend are not looking like they are going down. They have turned the corner.

Which leaves us and Barrow in the mire, and then a nine point gap for us to bridge to Colchester.

I just don't see it happening.
