Strong squad. I suppose the extra potential income from getting through a few rounds becomes more important this season.

5-2-1-2/3-4-1-2?

Pollock, Waterfall and Hendrie CB and Clifton and Preston wing backs. Rose and Morton centre mid with Bennett playing behind a front 2 of Green and Windsor?

433? Hendrie RB Preston LB Clifton in the middle?

Bennett left Windsor right Green down the centre

Disappointing, not enough incisive play again.....too many players happy to go back or sideways .....no cohesion up front.

They have defended well when we have broke into the box but just not enough quality in the final third.

Morton dallying about on a few occasions costing us promising positions.

Excellent footy
But cow's bottom and banjo spring to mind
Final ball/final third
Poor

Don't expect it to be right 80% of time (if it was they wouldn't be in L2) but 50% perhaps?

Marine are at Clee's level aren't they?
Posted by: Madeleymariner, November 7, 2020, 3:59pm; Reply: 78
We're losing because we dont get enough players (eg the 3 midfielders) into the box in open play. So the cross in usually has at most 2 players to aim at, and we have no one who will take it forward in centre of midfield. We are the better team but as nearly every game virtually nothing in the final 3rd, lets hope Oliie gives them some in the dressing room

Wouldn't say he's struggling, he's put two of the best crosses today into the box, its just Dag close him down with 2 or 3 players forcing him to go backwards most of the time

If we moved to a 4-4-2 or some shape to give us more players in the box we’ll score a few.

The front 3 are just spread to far across the pitch.

Spot on!.  I just came back from watching Ho Chi Minh City and they are a carbon copy of town.  Tons of possession , play some neat football but problems in the final third.  The opposition hardly got in our half but scored a corker from 25 yards.  When a decent cross is delivered , there's not enough red shirts to get on the end of it.  I'm cursed.

Let's get this right...
two things wrong
Poor final third and a stupid mistake have killed us

Holloway cannot be blamed for any of that IMO - his subs were spot on... fresh legs etc

We have conceded so many self-inflicted goals this season; brainless play, brainless decision making, sloppy play, poor touch

90% of that was good - but counts for naff all if you shoot yourself in the foot

People don't want a voice of reason at this moment of time but it's a lack of killer instinct up top means we are always vulnerable

For all our possession and domination they created the two best chances of second half!

Says a lot about us - toothless

D&R deserved the win for their hard work and determination but we handed it to them on a plate. I thought it was actually a good game of football where we played with more attacking intent which wasnt quite finding the end product but then we just gift them a golden opportunity by being lazy and passing it to a midfielder in our centre back position, get the fecker out wide or up to the front men FFS....where does macca expect morton to go from the centre edge of our own box!!?? Sad to see and sad to see the reaction. Decisions were made to cobble together a squad at the last possible minute and we’ve got a mishmash of players who weren’t fit or weren’t wanted by their parent club. By the time we get to sit and watch this lot, our season tickets will be worthless but we might, just might, have a league club to watch next season. This season to all intents and purposes is over.

If you think the current squad in anyway resemble the wage stealers that Poojah's letter was aimed at then you've got a very short memory. We have a young squad making their way in the game. Results are inconsistent and probably will be throughout the season but I've not seen a lack of effort in any games so far. Shame we have so many so called fans who spit their dummy out after every defeat. Unfortunately Ollie will see soon that our magnificent support has a not so magnificent minority who are far more vocal when we lose than when we win. I don't know why but it's always been the case even with the best managers in our history.

Thought we looked exciting going forward. Passing much better. But too many risks taken leading to the ball being given away in centre midfield. They need to learn when to play adventurous passes (and boy there were some beauts today) and when to keep it safe and not pass to a guy under pressure in the middle of the park.

Oh and Preston, try for once to take it past your man or knock it forward rather than going with your instinct to pass it back when an opposition player approaches you. You might still lose the ball but at least it's lost further upfield than with our central defender.
Posted by: Croxton, November 7, 2020, 5:18pm; Reply: 218
At each substitution I expected Morton to go. Why take Windsor off? Of course Olly has to share the blame. Again we have not played the conditions or respected the opposition. Possession is not the same as pressure. Their centre halves and keeper will have many harder games this season. Too many touches and sideways moves meant they had time to mark our runners. So many delayed crosses and passes. Our constipated midfield is the main worry. Far too late to bring on Williams.

Well done Daggers.

In the same week that we lost a true legend in Sir Matt, a man who was proud to wear the shirt and gave everything for the cause, we now come to the realisation that we have been lumbered with our usual journeymen, loanees and misfits for another season. Players who don't give a sh1t about Grimsby Town.

As usual we started the season full of hope only to come to the realisation that the season is over and its only November !

Too many average players in key positions , we have to consider/accept/ acknowledge that the budget and climate has effected that  BUT getting average players to overplay the ball in our danger areas is the choice and will of the manager. Overplaying it back and sideways and looking for a long diagonal switch is now obvious, boring to watch and producing nothing.

Bottom of the non league and we hardly worked the keeper at all second half, a softish penalty our only way of scoring. Apart from 15mins of first half we had no sustained pressure at all, just possession in relatively comfortable areas for the opposition.

If the budget has gone then Holloway has to adapt with what he has, play to your strengths ....or if we cant think of what they are then at least stop playing to the obvious weaknesses.

Any other time we’d get over this come next week but at a time when supporters are suffering lock down blues and little to look forward to its times like now we really need the Club to represent our aspirations.

I really hope the commentator enjoyed his Lasagne tonight, I’ll cling onto that hope as GTFC will be off my menu for a few weeks.

Some of the over reaction on here, whilst not surprising, is still laughable. Anyone deluding themselves this is the worst town side ever is utterly clueless or simply didn't watch the team of urine taking wage stealers that slid into the conference. I

've seen far worse performances going back just one previous manager (jolley) than today.

However, although we ran the game second half and had lots of possession, we didn't show anything like enough in the final third. We seem to want to have the perfect opportunity to cross it, so we delay until we lose the ball. We usually invariably play free kicks short rather than taking an opportunity to mix things up with an effort into the box.

And it has to be said the team take far too many risks immediately in front of goal for no benefit. What could the purpose of Maccas pass to Morton possibly be? How could he have benefited us there. Especially as he is a player who barely knows how to pass it forward anyway. Morton is always going to be a liability in the midfield and even against a team from a lower division he offers nothing whatsoever going towards their goal.

Hopefully Ollie will start to change how he expects Macca to play because he can't do what he is being asked to, and cut down on the pointless fannying about at the back. He will hopefully stop playing Morton or spokes unless it's an emergency. And he will Need to work on encouraging us to member the trigger and get it in the box more - we don't even get to the pulling the trigger bit! What work did their keeper need to do today!? However I think we have more than enough to be safe, and if those things are done we will be looking up not down.
Posted by: aldi_01, November 7, 2020, 5:44pm; Reply: 240
I mean, throwing it out there, we looked worse when Green went off.

Clifton huffs and puffs and you can’t fault that but sometimes you need a footballer...

Of course this side isn’t worse than those disgraceful wastes of oxygen that took us down, but we didn’t have any alternative. The problem we have this season is we’ve brought them in, it appears they’re not rated so they don’t play but the alternatives and the chopping and changing aren’t helping.

You can have a pop at Macca for Morton’s mistake but that was basic and Morton only had himself to blame. We couldn’t finish a dinner and in reality we probably deserved nothing more than a draw.

I guess the club will see it is as a positive because we’ll take away 6k and not have to ply any additional games but today was a good chance, if we’re focused purely on cash, to generate additional income and perhaps build some momentum.

Instead we’ve now got two pointless games, and haven’t got a league game for a fortnight. We’ll probably see changes in that, once again impacting negatively on any potential togetherness. Will we use excuses like lack of game time or fitness? Who knows?

Just very frustrating after getting a win in the week to eventually lose the game 3-1 with only ourselves to blame for the mistakes...

Despite what I have written about some people being OTT - hard to disagree with much of this

Ollie get a grip and sort this joke of a back four out

I mean, throwing it out there, we looked worse when Green went off.

Clifton huffs and puffs and you can’t fault that but sometimes you need a footballer...

Of course this side isn’t worse than those disgraceful wastes of oxygen that took us down, but we didn’t have any alternative. The problem we have this season is we’ve brought them in, it appears they’re not rated so they don’t play but the alternatives and the chopping and changing aren’t helping.
Macca played Morton into trouble

Probably by their ability to stick the ball in the net unlike us

One of the biggest problems for me this season is that we never seem to have any midfield runners getting into scoring positions, meaning we never seem to have enough people in the box. How many goals have our midfield scored from inside the area this season? I’ll give you a clue - zero. That’s tactics/coaching surely. Also, free kicks and corner delivery - still shite.

I think the above comes naturally to some players, Lampard for Chelsea and even Groves for us, but then you have Henderson of Liverpool, very rarely gets in the box or even makes a forward pass but is thought of a world class midfielder, it takes both sorts to have a successful midfield but we seem to have just one sort.

Arsenal replaced Petr Cech because he couldn't get to grips with playing out from the back who was a world class keeper and we're expecting an half decent league 2 keeper to try to do it..either Holloway changes the keeper or accepts that whilst we have Macca there'll be a few balls ups playing this way.

Nobody’s expecting him to suddenly become Manuel Neuer though are they. All he’s asked to do is play simple 10-15 yard passes rather than tanning it long.

So far this season he’s kicked one into his own net, chased a dead ball to knock it back into the danger zone, and today decided to give the ball to a young lad with no options, on the edge of our box, in the last minute of a cup tie.

Holloway on the radio just said if Rose was on the pitch that goal wouldn’t have happened as he would’ve stopped Morton going for it - why is McKeown, at 31, captain and been at the club for 10 years, not able to make that decision too?

Absolutely p1ss-boiling.

They were both at fault, but you’d hope McKeown would have the mental capacity to realise that Morton’s only option was either make a 180 degree turn with someone up his ar5e or give it straight back to him. Both centre-halves were marked, and we had just conceded a chance by giving the ball away needlessly. D&R had had the best of the previous 5/10 mins and it might’ve been a better idea to slow the game down slightly

As for Morton, he needs to get a bit of physicality about him. I’ve seen more meat on a gnat’s c0ck and he spends half his time falling over from minimal contact. I’m not sure what kind of cosseted, lightweight football they play at u23 level, but he’s been bullied every time I’ve seen him.

I’m not sure I’ve seen a keeper sweeper in L2 since we’ve been back, or not one that’s rememberable. I think Scott Brown who was at Wycombe and went to Port Vale could use his feet but then again the amount of teams who play out from the back are minimal, if we can get the attacking blend right though we should stick with it.

He is better than any of the dross that has been brought into the club this season.

FFS the players that went out the door were heads and shoulders above any that were brought in.

Don't want to hear all this cutting the cloth because of C19 bullocks.
Its plain to see the lack of will to keep those players here and the lack of ambition ambition for this club is less than ever since the great leaders political ambitions have taken centre stage.

The pass wasn’t necessarily the problem but the timing was. It gave them a needless opportunity which we could never recover from. Back to the captaincy question again.

Exactly!  What do they do during the week?  Play subbuteo?- even then they might learn about positioning.  How often do we see a through ball that cuts the opposition defense in half?  It's so easy to defend against us.  Teams must understand by now.  Let us have possession,we'll do nothing with it. Just wait until we make a mistake and pounce.

There's nothing wrong with playing it out from the back but you don't have to do it through the whole game. You can vary it.  It's the same when Hanson is playing, we loft it in the air for him.  Yes, it's an option and a good one to have but we tend to do it all the time.  Why are we a team of one trick ponies?

I was one of those yesterday that posted on the subject of Clifton. At the time I was angry at the way we lost and perhaps my comments came across as "slagging him off". If it did, I will apologise for that as it was not the intention.

The point of my post was to say that although, in my opinion, Clifton is not a great footballer, he is one of best players we have seen so far this season. So the point was more of a reflection on everyone else rather than him.

To qualify the point about him not being a great footballer, I am talking about skill and natural ability. I did mention that he makes up for that in the 100% effort that he puts in, without that he probably wouldn't get close to a place in the first team.

I also noticed at the final whistle yesterday, while most of the other players routinely walked around giving out the fist pumps, Clifton sank to his knees like he'd just lost in the World Cup Final. That is the sort of passion and buy in to the club that we need and currently only he is showing it.

So yes, although I don't believe Clifton is the greatest player with regard to ability, he has bucket loads of passion and effort which stands him apart from almost everyone else in the squad at present.

One of the major reasons we beat MKDonuts in the FAC 1st round two years ago was because their keeper insisted on passing it around in his area.... we just closed them down the same as D&R did to us yesterday.

Every time I see us try to play this way I just expect an error... it's not as if we go on to pass it all the way up the field either. More often than not it's rolled around the back a few times and then just wellied up to the opposition half by one of our defenders, so all this keeping possession malarkey doesn't hold water for me

L2 standard players shouldn’t try to play it around at the back for 2 reasons .
1.The standard of pitches make errors far more likely
2. The standard of players make errors far more likely

Playing it out of defence works if you do it right, but we don't. The idea is to make space by the opposition having to close down further forwards. This needs midfield runners to pass and move, but we insist on playing Taylor and/or Morton who pass sideways and stand still or drop back. Clifton and Williams do this, but we never get both in the middle together.

Shouldn't McKewan have shown some awareness of where the opposition player was as he was facing that way whereas their player was behind Morton.

I take your point.... if it's done right, then it can be effective

I just don't think we have players with the required ability to take it out from the back and turn defence into attack

What we get is a poor facsimile of what the top teams do ( and even then, they don't always get it spot on )

Exactly. In the week when we sadly lost Matt Tees, you would really like to see some intent, from the top down, to create something a bit more memorable. Alas, to use Tory wordage, we seem to be more intent on positive balance sheets than positive outcomes on the pitch.

The truth is Macca costs too many points over the season. He is the Club captain but I don’t see this benefit on match day, apart from running to the referee when one our players is disciplined.

He’s been loyal to Town but we could do with a keeper on loan from a higher league to put some pressure on him.

You've said what most think....loved having Macca and he's been brilliant but I do think he's got too comfortable and maybe a little complacent with no one pushing to take his shirt off his back....he has zero competition for his place and the one time he did he threw his toys right out his pram...not seen Battersby play tbh, wonder if Holloway will contemplate giving him a chance in the next 2 games in the Tim pot cup ..

I don't think it's anything to do with complacency. He still makes the good saves that we love him for. The problem is that he's being asked to do something he's not very good at. Distribution has always been one of his two main weaknesses, and now we're asking him to play the ball in a way that if he makes a mistake, it costs a goal. It's not his fault that he's being told to do something he isn't good at.

Do you think he was told to pass it out to feet on absolutely every single opportunity without fail, or do you think it was expected that the club captain might be able to decide when it was appropriate or not?

The other goals he’s directly cost us this year - Harrogate he chased a dead ball down and slid to keep it in play for some reason, & Carlisle he decided not to take a touch which is nothing to do with tactics, it’s an aberration.

So if he's no good at it, it begs the question of why play that way, if he's certain to play? You've got to play to your strengths. Fine, get another keeper long term, if you think playing that way is the way to go, but in the meantime play the way that suits what you have.

Looking at the match stats Trump would have called victory for Town with 15 minutes to go.

A bit like we experienced occasionally in the Hurst promotion season we struggled to break down a very limited National League team that just worked hard, got men behind the ball in their own final third and had a keeper who had a good day (when ours didn't). Playing out from the back is costing us a goal every two games at the moment and the problem is we don't have an Amond or a Bogle up top to make it not matter so much. But I agree with Ollie, we did play pretty well - like their commentators said we passed it at pace and switched the play well. Matt Green grafts ok but he's neither a poacher nor a target man bringing others into play. I'd like to see Windsor given a run of games in a more central role.
