What is Bennetts likely position?

Thought he a had a few good early touches in his previous brief appearance but tired very quickly.

I'm expecting 433 with Tilley in midfield for some extra creativity and imagination.
Windsor and Bennett either side of Green.

Though I do like having plenty of players that can fit into different positions and in different systems. It must keep the opposition guessing. Should be 433 today I'd have thought but could easily be 4231, 442 or a 4312/diamond.

What has Max Wright done other than one run against Macclesfield that puts him in out best 11? I doubt he's in the top 5 for the positions he can play in if everybody is fit and on form. Tilley, Edwards, Scannell, Bennett and Windsor can all play that same role.

Clifton still a big miss for me. Taylor needs to step up.

We need Edwards back too.

Max scored a nice goal away to Morcambe first game of the season, he's good at counter attacking and gets stuck in well enough for a small lad. Nice pace to be able to bring on IMO.

Clifton a glaring omission for me - Taylor needs to step up to the plate as a direct replacement and do rose's running for him. Edwards a big miss. Surprised at Bennett starting so soon. If he was unfit 2 weeks ago how come he is now ready to start and mohsni is still nowhere to be seen - seems odd.

At least we have max and Hanson to come on to change things round. Max's pace and ability put wide might dovetail nicely with Hanson, however max is only just coming back so is likely to be a bit rusty and need some time to get up to speed.

Why is our midfield not taking a pass from our back four? Need higher tempo to get Stevenage turned and giving fouls again. Prefer Bennet on the ball to either Pollock or Preston.

1 shot all half? Tilleys header? That was dull, ref doesn't help this blowing his whistle every 30 seconds and not letting either side create any sort of flow, but by god its dull.

Too much side ways passing and a complete inability to pass the ball in their half of the pitch.

Midifeld is either too deep with the CBs or too high up with the strikers not where we actually want them in the middle, nothings happening down the right not much better down the left.

Strikers feeding off scraps and when they attack they always seem to have a man free suggesting we're not marking and tracking players today.

Too much playing at the back weve gave the ball away 4 times in dangerous positions doing it, its alright playing a system if pur players can play it which they seem to be struggling with at the moment. Stevenage had like 30 percent of the ball yet had 4 more shots on target to our 0 plus they hit the post. We just need to get it up the pitch quicker sometimes and stop pissing about with it.
Posted by: Kris2, October 31, 2020, 3:58pm; Reply: 97
The game is all a bit boring really, not much to say about it except this whole play from the back all the time isn't working out. We don't have much at the back with pace capable of taking the ball out so we end up with the midfield dropping deep all the time to get the ball so they go missing too often. Just wish we'd have more movement and pick out a decent pass instead of always passing to the player standing next to them.

Totally agree. Makes my blood boil. There's an unwillingness to take the ball forward. They think they're doing the unrisky thing and retaining possession but it just puts the next player back in a tricky position. Much better to take a risk and lose it near their box than lose it near ours.

Posted by: toontown, October 31, 2020, 4:04pm; Reply: 109
Lucky not to go in one down, or worse. We are utterly without penetration up top this half and have no drive in the middle. We get a free kick inside their half, and to the commentators amusement choose to pass it back to Macca. Sums us up at the moment. We are also suckers for attempting quick short free kicks from positions that could be used to force it Into the box. This so rarely works now as teams can stand in front of the taker with no penalty, if its quick, meaning the ball has to go backwards, so it's usually pointless when your as weak a penetrating team as we are at the mo.

Bennett has made some good touches and looks promising. Gomis control looks suspect but at least he has tried to make things happen.

We've looked very suspect all over the pitch to be honest, against a team that's dire which is really worrying. Need to change the formation I think.

Moaning bunch of barstewards !!!...you complained when we got sladeball, you complained when we got bignot bingo, clueless Jolley, pragmatic Hurst...now we are at least trying to play football, passing, possession based football...it's a complete change in the style and needs time to bed in!... personally, I'll take this style of not getting battered and aimless balls to huddle on the left of the half way line from macca... Rome wasn't built in a day, give it time, Christ it took Guardiola 2 seasons to get city firing and Klopp 5 seasons!..

Max is only just back from his injury, obviously Olly and probably Dave Moore don't believe he should be playing 60+ minutes of football

Agree. As much as that wasnā€™t good enough. We havenā€™t had any time to work on things on the pitch.

When Holloway started his ā€˜footballā€™ approach with Blackpool. Even thompson his number two questioned him whether he had the players to do it. They went on to play entertaining football in the premier league.

Holloway needs time to actually coach our players.

It does though. If it's not working for you then it's probably something on your own end that you're incapable of understanding from a technical point of view. In either case you're not forced to pay for it and can choose to spend and not spend your money as you wish.

It doesn't though.  Maybe it works for you ,  I have tried multiple browsers and  cleared history and cookies as they always suggest. Try and get any service and it's terrible.

I don't work for them and have no reason to give a excrement about customer service. Unfortunately people like you think it means that you're always right even when you're wrong and won't do simple things to fix the problem you're having because you don't understand how to do it.

In most cases I'm going to guess it's either a hardware issue being that most of you are trying to watch on something about as powerful as a tonka toy, a software issue because it's full of bloatware and other crap you put on there and on your browser or some sort of routing issue because of however you're trying to connect.

Personally I'd start with turning off whatever browser add ons you use like ad blockers or seeing if turning off the vpn and proxy settings makes a difference. Maybe even google a list of crap you have installed that you don't actually need. Then I would do a clean install of your OS and reinstall the browser and finally throw the tonka toy in the rubbish and buy something useful.

Holloway's weird interpretation of 'fitness'. He seems to think professional athletes are incapable of playing first team football unless you rest them every other match or until they've played about 3 reserve matches if they're coming back from injury.

What exactly do our lads do during the week?  They can't do throw-ins (something Ollie has alluded to), the corners are rubbish and the passing is dismal.  When we try to go square it goes behind the player.  By the time the recipient has adjusted his feet, he's under pressure.
Posted by: Chrisblor, October 31, 2020, 4:46pm; Reply: 174
Gibson there had Gomis steaming through the middle and he could have put him clean through with a simple sideways pass, but he's got no awareness and ends up holding the ball up and getting fouled. Then of course from the set piece we can't even beat the first man with it. Properly inept sunday league stuff this.

Taylor and Rose in midfield both sat and neither have the legs to press the opposition. Theyā€™ll be disappointed they didnā€™t win so probably a point gained and some really great defending at times.

Frustrating is the best word i can use to describe the game. every time the ball went up our attacking players had their backs to the Stevenage goal. We looked more dangerous when Hanson came on.

Special mention for the officiating which was absolutely awful. Stevenages tactic seemed to be touch the ball then fall on it and the ref bought it every time. He also appeared very reluctant to give us anything in any meaningful position.

Nearly a smash and grab in last 15 mins but not, Macca has made up for the other week without him we would have lost 2 or 3 nil. Taylor totally underwhelming again, neither good at protecting the back 4 or driving us forward (how he gets in Wales U21 ahead of Clifton I have no idea) Hanson helped at set pieces but that was it. Needs to get fit. Too many small nippy players in our team who if they dont get the ball to use their pace with may as well not be on the pitch. A bit more going forward than Tuesday but got away with it at the back.
Posted by: Croxton, October 31, 2020, 5:24pm; Reply: 219
Kyle Bennet unlucky to be subbed so soon. His dead ball kicks and forward play better than Williams. Windsor and Tilley trying to beat players in the wrong areas and giving free kicks away. There is potential in so many players but in the framework of a settled team singing to the same hymn sheet. Looked like schools footy at times in the attacking half and over 70's walking football in defence.

Edit:-  Did anyone else see Hendrie lose the ball near the opposition penalty area and stop to pull up his socks before bothering to chase back?

I did not have to travel to watch that rubbish.

There will be a national lockdown next week so we do not have to watch this rubbish for another month.

Good to see we watched the same gamešŸ˜‰.Taylor unfortunately is neither a defensive or attacking midfielder at the moment and looked out of his depth today. Good shift by Rose though.

How many times do u hear from professional mangers that u need to build a strong defender to be successful.
Despite all the usual rubbish following a disappointing performance we do seem to have a decent defence

We also have quite a few promising midfielder and forwards once fitness and injury is under control
Just cut the lads some slack please. We are comfortably ahead of the stunts and sorfend

I reckon we missed the perfect midfield of Taylor and Morton. PS  men in white coats are knocking.

Totally agree.
How we miss Hess.

Preston has been shite the last few games, but we have no option out there. Hendrie hasn't been much better. Centre backs have done well, but theyy should have scored 3 today so they aren't getting any credit from me today.

The only things i can say that is positive is.

I did not have to travel to watch that rubbish.

There will be a national lockdown next week so we do not have to watch this rubbish for another month.

I hope the players use the time to get fit and get over their injuries.

Finally we do not have Trump running our country.

What am I saying we have Boris !!!!!!!!

And you might find that football will continue.
The PL certainly will.

The biggest worry today was how little we worked their keeper but a point away I suppose isn't to be sniffed at albeit against a struggling team.

Edwards is a big miss for me, he makes things happen.

Rubbish game, rubbish ref, rubbish day. If weā€™re going to play a possession game maybe we should learn how to pass.

Far too many passes to go no where or backwards
It really pisses me off when we get a free kick with a chance of getting the ball in the area, defenders go up for it, we take it short and it ends up back with McKeown.

If performaces carry on like to that we will be in a relegation battle of we aren't in one already.

To think we couldā€™ve kept Hess, Whitehouse & Vernam if weā€™d wanted to. Respect the club for cutting their cloth accordingly, but add Edwards and a couple of others to those 3 and the midfield would be so much better.

Having now watching all but one of our games,I think I am in the position to state too many of our side ae really not up to the standard of league football. There is a shocking inability to read situations and the total lack of any ability to string passes together  unless they are going backwards.Their is very little ball control inability to run at players and some are shockingly lightweight in the tackle, except for that we are average.

Really disappointed with Taylor so far, considering his supposed pedigree. Iā€™m not sure what role heā€™s meant to be fulfilling, but if itā€™s the ball playing midfielder heā€™s a miles off. He doesnā€™t seem to have the awareness to move the ball quickly through the middle of the park, the strength to protect it, or the ability to pick someone out and switch the play. Dead balls are junk and Iā€™ve seen more life in a trampā€™s vest. When you compare him with the likes of Embleton and Robson who weā€™ve had previously, they were streets ahead.

Can't believe he is ahead of Clifton for Wales u21. Clifton is a clearly better player overall. We missed him again today

Taylor is comfortable when we are in square and backwards mode but when the game gets stretched he soon looks tired and starts to misplace passes. Hess had the gears to switch quickly from defence to attack and back again. Like Windsor and Tilley, he tries to beat a man unnecessarily at times. One player like that is enough. With three or four squandering possession, too many attacks fizzle out. Every other team seems to get something, corner, throw in, free kick or a cross from their attacks. Our final third stats must be terrible. Stevenage worked so many opportunities and could have won 4-0.

Really? I thought Stevenage weren't much better than us but for some woeful finishing we could have been well beaten.

What exactly do our lads do during the week?  They can't do throw-ins (something Ollie has alluded to), the corners are rubbish and the passing is dismal.  When we try to go square it goes behind the player.  By the time the recipient has adjusted his feet, he's under pressure.

This is the point. They donā€™t have enough time. They canā€™t work on things. There isnā€™t time. The season is a joke. Sky and the prem have screwed us on the promise of funding. We only started cos they said they would help our funding.

We maybe locking down soon. Our club has set a budget that has survival as the primary purpose. We have therefore scraped a new squad together. This is the most important thing. Survival. To say our players and Holloway arenā€™t trying, or wasting time in training is out of order.

We get back late tonight. Recovery session tomorrow. Then one day of training on Monday before barrow on Tuesday.

You have one day ..... What do you do? Work on your team philosophy. Focus on the opposition. Work on set pieces like you say. Fitness ???? Whilst also Not over working the players as they are playing the next day?

You then play Tuesday.  You finish late Tuesday. Wednesday recovery day. You then have Thursday to train. A lighter session Friday. Game Saturday.  REPEAT. what the intercourse do you expect our lads to do.

This is ontop of us having 2 weeks less development than every other team due to covid.

Serious question. What do you want them to do. What do you want them to do in their one day of training before the next match.  ????

If we have so little training time, then why do we make such mass changes so often? Have we ever played remotely the same team in two games?
Posted by: Hagrid, October 31, 2020, 10:49pm; Reply: 242
A really poor Stevenage side could have won that 3/4-0. Too many players look out of place in league 2, our subs bar Hanson changed nothing. Worrying
Posted by: toontown, October 31, 2020, 10:51pm; Reply: 243
The lack of pre season was the club's choice tho so it's not all out of our hands. Some of it is self inflicted.

Every other team is also dealing with the 2 matches a week scenario so we are not special in that regard. Is the constant chopping and changing happening at other clubs - I don't know
Posted by: aldi_01, November 1, 2020, 8:16am; Reply: 244
The shortened pre season was self inflicted and we can moan about training all we want but everyone else is managing...I guess it works for us though, blame someone or something else to detract from the real concerns...

I think half the problem is that, injuries apart, Holloway is making needless changes as he tries to select a team every week to suit/counter the opposition.

He's getting it wrong too many times, perhaps he doesn't know as much as he thinks he does (the ball doesn't have laces anymore Ollie) or he is not reading the opposition correctly (possibly he doesn't have the time he needs to devote to watching them) but he should stick as closely as he can to the same team every week especially after two cracking results v Cheltenham and the Orient.
Posted by: aldi_01, November 1, 2020, 8:36am; Reply: 246
Remember when Jolley and Hurst were criticised for matching up against the opposition and worrying about stopping them rather than playing our own way?

I guess weā€™ll never know but I wonder if the crowd would be restless as would be expected in our current form?

Does not matter how he changes it . in reality we have a team that is not much better than an average lg2 reserve team .
This will not alter because money is short  , and  what we have got in is too many either far too young or has no experiance of league football, So all we have got is a weak team . What we have so far is relagation form what ever way you look at it points wise . fortunatly there are teams that are worse than us up to now ......

I think Ollie signed too many of the players who he had not seen play for a long time or ever and relied on his contacts or even players themselves . Yes I am fit and ready to go was probably the response he got from most of them.

Ollie did not have much experience of this division so had to rely on others but he is getting to know more every game and he will sort of out sooner or later.

Write this season off as a learning curve and we go again stronger and wiser next season.

Ollie should know who he can rely on by now  so I expect a settle team going forward so we should see a few better results.

Keep the faith.

Probably the one which started with a free kick well into their half, and through slick passing and teamwork the ball ended up ā€˜safelyā€™ at the feet of Macca. It had me up on my feet shouting ā€œEngland! Itā€™s just like watching England.ā€

but we have a complete new squad, with a lot of these signings happening very late on. we also didn't have a pre season due to the uncertainty of when the season was going to begin. A lot of clubs have gambled their financial futures and got a squad together earlier than us. A lot of these teams will also start to struggle paying wages in the coming clubs.

Our football has been affected by our sensible off season decisions.

We wont know if those decisions were sensible until we know where we are come the end of the season whether it finishes or is curtailed.
