Town are interested in signing Nottingham Forest striker Virgil Gomis on loan according to BBC's Matt Dean.

This could be a good move for Gomis, and it’s probably the last chance for him to impress Forest’s first-team coaches.

He’s now 21 and he’s no longer a young boy emerging from the academy – he’s had a couple of loan spells away from the club, but has failed to set the world alight.

He will be keen to get some games under his belt and get scoring some goals for the Mariners.

Last chance for the lad could work in our favour...

Seem a bit pointless to be honest another young loan player when we can only field 5 of 6 already.

1 in 26 for 3 clubs on wiki....

absolute fantastic signing if it comes off ;D

Surely there must be some (older) strikers with proven goal scoring records in the Football League out there without clubs,

An average of 1 in 4 or 5 would do rather than these young kids with no senior appearances to speak of and even fewer goals

His showreel shows he has some pace, likes to run at the opposition, and has an occasional pop at goal.

Turn the monotonous sound off though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOmAZoEBxe4&t=207s

What is worrying is that he seems to score at will for the Under 23's, but playing at this level, can't hit a barn door with a banjo from 2 yards.

Should fit in perfectly.

Thought the same Pete. IH said one of them was with an English club, so makes sense.

Possibly. Obviously not the one that came over from France but could have been the UK based one, although rumours were that the player was from Norwich City

That’s right Swin. We can’t be relying on young unproven forward players like Edwards, Tilley and Windsor to be scoring goals for us.

As much as I support IH I have to say the number of “strikers” signed, is a bit puzzling as is the failure to get in a more experienced one. All appear to have performed well at their respective levels but mostly untried, or to date unsuccessful, at L2 level.

Still shouldn’t judge a player until I have seen him perform a few times and like any player joining town I wish him every success but unsure when a number of these guys, particularly those on a one year deal, are going to get a chance to show their worth.

I am a bit puzzled by this signing. And it doesnt fit in with what Holloway said earlier in the week.

I welcome the lad and wish him well. But we have signed a few young unproven forwards in this window. Holloway said he wanted a goalscorer...a guy with a proven track record of scoring goals. Someone to rely on. Yet he signs yet another young unproven player just like the others. Quick look on wiki shows he's scored 1 goal in just under 30 professional appearances. Not quite the proven goalscorer we need.

I am baffled.

His name can also be useful as a high word score when the team plays scrabble or are looking for an unusual anagram. Apparently, Virgil also means “flourishing”.  Let us hope that he does.

With games coming thick and fast Ollie will be rotating the squad so I don't see a problem with having more than 5 loans.

Welcome to GTFC Virgil.

Makes sense, if you’re going to be playing 3 forwards for 90 mins running around doing a high press, to have a squad capable of doing it Sat-Tues-Sat-Tues all the way through to Christmas.

He’s obviously got something about him & can probably trap and pass a ball if he’s been at Forest u23s, which is a sight more than a lot of forwards we’ve had in the past.

Good luck to him.

Ollie explains his reasoning here:

I'm a bit baffled by this signing too. We have loads of young strikers on the books now and of the three we have actually signed to contracts, only Gibson has had any game time yet.

Just have to trust the management on this one.

I think signing loan players is quite sensible in the current situation. Less players on the books if the season gets canceled

No you're absolutely right, we can't rely on them and if they do start scoring regularly week in week out we won't need all the unproven, unfit because they only trained once a week and have barely played a league game strikers Holloway seems to be amassing.anyway

And if the three you mention, with a goal each at the moment, suddenly stop scoring goals all the unproven, unfit because they only trained once a week and have barely played a league game strikers aren't going to be the ones we can confidently fall back on either

I had in mind an experienced striker as in Hanson (but not permanently injured, can actually run a bit and is without a club so won't want Hansonlike wages)
Posted by: Kris2, October 16, 2020, 2:11pm; Reply: 27
Not the worst idea to bring in these lads on loan as with the packed fixtures and injuries we'll probably need to rotate and have people who are ready to slot in and play how we need them to play. Not really all that interested in his past record, will judge him on what he delivers for us. Always feel like people put too much on a past record when we've had players who did well for us after not exactly setting the world alight elsewhere. Maybe sometimes it gets proven correct and they don't deliver here either but I'm going to give everyone who joins this team support and the chance to do the business on the pitch as I do think we have players capable of making things happen. It just depends if they want it enough or not and if we give them the right coaching and motivation.

Always amazes me how every summer we fail to pick up any of the hundreds, maybe thousands, of experienced strikers with a good pedigree, a record of 25 goals plus a season at a higher level, without any interest from other clubs and who will play for peanuts.

Baffling.

Posted by: TheRonRaffertyFanClub, October 16, 2020, 4:47pm; Reply: 32
I can see both sides of this. We would like to have a mature striker with a decent record but they do not grow on trees. Beggars can’t be choosers can they? All the loan players have something to prove and we have no choice but to take a chance on them.
Posted by: oochiad, October 16, 2020, 5:10pm; Reply: 33
Boris Johnson urine off, your boring. IH has a plan, it’s starting to come good, this is another part of it. We don’t have the cash to spend so IH is doing it this way, have some faith for gods sake. UTMM!
Posted by: Mikey_345, October 16, 2020, 5:12pm; Reply: 34
We are playing twice a week for the next few months at least and all clubs are going to struggle with that. Which is if no other games are postponed, if they are then that’s yet more games in shorter and shorter time.

So IH has collected a selection of loanees to complement the squad and be able to rotate as needed, can’t imagine we’d be paying much for them. Can’t see the problems here.

Really Impressed with the summer window, especially under the current circumstances re covid. There’s no guarantee the season completes or fans will be allowed in. Last thing we need is a huge squad on the books if that happens.

If you actually listen to Holloway and his reasons for doing this it makes complete sense.

Oh and let’s actually see the boy play first yer?

Posted by: Croxton, October 16, 2020, 5:53pm; Reply: 37
Edwards can't be MOM every game and we have a duty to the loaning clubs to look after their players. Gomis is another who can break at pace from midfield and attack defenders. If his work rate out of possession is O.K. then he will fit into Ollies game plan. I wonder if he originally wanted either Bennet or Gomis and somehow ended up with both. Perhaps we are doing Forest a favour?

I’ve got to be honest, I find something quite fascinating about the mindset behind internet trolling. I mean, what is it that possesses people to spend the precious time we have on this earth attempting to anonymously wind up people they don’t know on the internet forum of an unfashionable east coast football club?

Don’t get me wrong, my life’s not perfect - whose is? But I think if I had any of the following in my life, I’d do something else with my time:

I mean, I could go on, but well, I rather have already. But Boris (quite possibly your real name), on the basis that you appear to have so very, very little going on in your life may I just ask - you ok hun? x

I’m with you on the smell of creosote. I used to take a detour on the way to junior school just to smell a creosote fence (well to be honest first time it was to follow a girl, but once I smelt that fence). Sad but true. And not half as sad as ‘Boris no Johnson’.

Not really sure what people expect TBH? I’m Town to the core and have been for 40 + years and always will be,

BUT (as Pete would say)

Let’s be honest for the best part of a decade we’ve either been non league or in the lower part of the 4th Division.

Property is cheap but the area has a bit of a reputation arguably unfounded but when you’re from the Metropolis and have a big family support network around that base then the Grimsby area may not appeal.

Then we get to remuneration...... if you’re a young kid who’s getting his salary covered by his host club then you ain’t lost much. Again if you’re a free agent with an attitude (Wes Thomas) or who’s legs have gone then maybe.

If you’ve still got a bit to offer and have flirted with 6 figure salaries then I reckon you’ll be fixed up close to home and will miss the daily delights of driving past Killingholme at full pelt every day.

On the back of my cynicism let’s just get behind anyone who has enough faith in IH and GTFC to make the trip and pull on the shirt.

Seriously guys can we have this most annoying cretin posting on here with the worst possible username known to man removed from this forum - to be associated with such a clown like he has done is embarrassing - as Poojah clearly states this guy trolling us has nothing but this forum so perhaps let’s take him off here please

;D

Gomis seems to have a physical presence about him which is often needed if we are being bullied by the opposition. He looks athletic and has age on his side so expect he can run and be competitive

Whether he can control a ball and shoot along with having a footballing brain, time will tell, but Ollie has a good reputation for developing players, so here’s hoping.

Its a forum & whilst you may find his posts annoying and banal,I don't believe he's broken the rules?

Are there any rules besides the ones the GTFC board make by whose grace this forum still exists? Can't remember the last time somebody was banned for things not related to saying things that may or may not be true about the owner or somebody employed by the club. Though I suppose they prefer the forum owner handing over their personal information so they can be summoned into the office for a "chat" where they act like the police printing out everything they said as evidence and interrogate them into pleading guilty.

Could be a good signing. If he can hold up play , create opportunities for supporting players and pop in with a few of his own then it could work out well.
