Today I had a good chat with Elliot Grandin outside Lidl on Cromwell Road while Mrs G loaded the car with shopping and offspring. Not exactly the place I would have envisioned meeting one of our players but I suppose they have to do all the menial tasks like the rest of us when they have nothing else to do with themselves at the moment.

Ashley Chambers lived in my village when he played for York and wasn't so keen on us at that time, gave us the ssshhh finger when Jason Walker scored the overhead kick against us

Had a drink after the game in the Main Stand bar with Joey Waters and Mikey Lester back in the day, a work colleague knew them personally.

I've also met and spoke fleetingly to Slade and Hurst.

Used to speak regularly about GTFC with Stuart Watkiss when he shopped at the store where I was working.  

I was very fortunate in the late 70’s early 80’s to work with the wife of a former Lincoln player called Dave Carr who sadly died in his forties from cancer.

That friendship not only meant I knew personally all Lincoln players from that era, Peake, Tony Cunningham, Mick Hartford, Gordon Hobson, George Shipley but his best mate was Glen Cockerill who I got to know very well. Glenn was big mates with ex- Mariner Owen Simpson so shared a few beers and stories with him.

Anyway friendship with Dave resulted him taking my as a guest to the 1981 PFA awards dinner in London and on the next table was Terry Venables and Tom Finney whilst we shared the table with ex Tranmere players including Ken Beamish, for older fans. We spent the afternoon drinking with Peter Grotier and other then Cardiff players and as an ex- Luton player spent a couple of hours at the PFA drinking with then Luton players, Tony Grealish, David Moss, Brian Stein and Mick Saxby wholater played a few games for town.

After what was a great night for me we returned to the hotel bar and in there was Dean Crombie and Joe Waters, as I knew Dean to say hello too from playing Lincs and Sunday League football against him before he turned pro I immediately headed for them and spent the next two hours talking about everything Grimsby and our superb team of that era.

Went to bed worse for wear but a night never to be forgotten, RIP Dave and thanks for one of the best nights a football fan could have.

I know Sue Barker (yes the Sue Barker) as she’s married to a mate of mine. Had an Indian meal with them 3 weeks ago! Not really football related but I thought I’d just show off!!

Whilst working in Peterborough in the eighties, I bumped into Mick Halsell, former captain of Town, then playing for Peterborough.
Really nice guy, whilst not being very popular with the Town supporters, but said he thoroughly enjoyed his time at Grimsby.
Made 12 appearances for Town, and 249 for Peterborough.

When I was a kid, I met Keith Alexander at that sports club on Hewitts Circus where Tesco is now, he signed my horrible orange penny floater plastic ball and told me "That's a nice ball."

For comic relief/children in need one year Steve Sherwood did a charity penalty shootout at Lindsey Lower school were you paid some money to take a couple of penalties against him. He saved all of mine.

I once met Steven Marley at a fans forum.

Met a fair few Town players over the years in random places...served several when I worked in a pub. Got drunk with Dean Saunders one game after his Donnie side had beat Hull.

Met several rock stars/actors, Liam Gallagher, Ian Brown, Mani, Liam Fray, Tim Burgess, the dude from dancing on ice, met an NFL player in America, no idea who he is though.

Your story reminded me that I met Aidan Davison at Orlando airport while he was still a town player. Both of us coming back from holiday. Nice guy, happy to have a chat and seemed like a lovely family as well.

Clive Mendonca in Greenwich Park - I  was going for a run; was wearing a town shirt.  He was walking towards me - I just shouted "SUPER CLIVE" as a ran past him....

Just after Ian Turner signed for Southampton, Town played Lincoln in a Lincolnshire Cup game on a Tuesday night. he used to drink in the Queen's along with Mike Czuczman, my local. He was sat looking despondent. by himself, on the train so I sat down with him and we shared my carry out on the way to Lincoln. He told me Lawrie Mac had wanted him to play in Terry Paine's testimonial, that same night, but he didn't know the guy so didn't bother. Think he realised me might get into bother, but he made a great name for himself at the Dell, and was a really nice guy.

Played darts in the New Imperical Club, in the same team as Bobby Ross (an excellent thrower) George McLean and Sir Matt. Great days for me, because they were all boyhood heroes of mine.

Met numerous players during Sir Alan's first stint at BP because he used to send players in to sign balls for us in the old Programme shop, now the club shop. Dave Wagstaff, ex Hull pulled up there one day, and was trying to get us to bulk buy those car flags that attached to your windows at the door. Nice chap, but he went away empty handed despite us getting him to sign some old Hull programmes for us.

Sat next to Kev Moore at school, took Tony Ford's place at Nunthorpe {he had flu and was two years younger}). Played in the same team as Paul Emson as well as Kev Moore. Played against Duncan Mackenzie with a tennis ball. Played against Terry Donvan at under 16  we lost 10-0 and he scored all 10. Played against Glen Cockerill vs Reynolds school. Dave Boylen worked for Archie Needham in the summer, yes players had summer jobs. He used to deliver our meat. Went to Blackpool when Town lost 2-1 in the first round of FA Cup. Half time got a drink and stood next to Billy Beaumont. My son was best friends with Brandon Buckley Sir Alan dropped him off once. Graham Taylor was my favourite player, always had a cheeky smile. Many years later met at Bradley sports had a chat told him about a game I remembered against Bristol Rovers. He'd scored and he remembered it as well. Really nice man.

I remember that incident.  Cummings steamed into him and Hunter got up and nutted him.  Not someone you should mess with.

While on holiday we had an Arsenal youth player sat one side of us who went on to play for Peterbrough.

On the other side we had a very pretty lady who was a dancer with her daughter who we saw in a TV advert when we got home.

Me and my mate once stood behind Stacy Coldicott in a taxi rank in Cleethorpes in the early hours. My mate shouted Stacy, he turned round to see who shouted, we were the only people behind him.

While in Manchester with the Mrs last January we also saw Shaun Pearson and the entire Wrexham squad in a bar having their Christmas party, she took a picture with him and got him to wave to me as I looked embarrassed on the other side of the room. My vision of footballers running amok whilst drunk was somewhat ruined as they were incredibly polite. Luke Summerfield was there also but identifying as a town fan to him probably wouldn’t have been the best idea given the abuse he got.

No I think "swin wins meeting George Best. In my opinion the Best there as ever been.

  I was a teacher in Huddersfield in the '80's ,and I was out drinking with some teacher friends one night in, I think, early 1987 , when who should walk in but Mike Lyons and Phil Bonnyman! They sat in a corner minding their own business while I made the mistake of pointing them out to my friends. I would have left it there, but of course one of my buddies who had  had a pint or three had to go over to them and say, quite loudly, " Our friend's a Grimsby fan." Surprisingly, they invited me over and we chatted for 10 or 15 minutes. They had been to watch a reserve game at Leeds Road and had popped in for a pint before getting back on the motorway.
  I am well aware of Lyons' reputation amongst Town fans, but I have to say they were both very friendly and welcoming to me that night and willing to chat about the club, recent matches, and other players.I kept my opinion about Mike playing himself as a striker to myself, which is probably just as well, but I have very fond memories of that evening.

Pre-John Player cricket in the early 60's I went to watch a match at Ross Sports ground. The match was between the Cricketing Cavaliers and a Lincolnshire side. Godfrey Evens played I was introduced to a young West Indian cricket who was proclaimed to be a future West Indian captain and great. His name Clive Lloyd.
Walking down Wembley way to the play off final against Northampton I spotted Lawie McMenemy with Dave Boylen. Imagine my surprise when they looked over and said "It's Don," and came over to speak to my father.

This last weekend bumped elbows with Alan Shearer at his golf course in Newcastle, didn’t have the balls to ask about his scar.

I played in the same school team as Paul Wilkinson at Toll Bar.
I marked John Robertson in the Nottingham Sunday League and was man of the match because I kept him in my pocket - he was a washed up alcoholic and about 15 years older than me! A right nasty b**tard, tried to kick lumps out of me when he realised he was being made to look a mug.
And on the other side of the coin - I played against Aden Butterworth (sp?) who used to play for Leeds when we were both students - he ran me ragged and made me look like a right clown. I got him at the right angle between the bye line and the penalty area and thought all was under control, he nutmegged me and then threw himself over my outstretched leg for a nailed on penalty.

Graham Taylor when manager of Lincoln came over to coach my years team at Clee Grammar as a favour to Owen Roberts. It was the day after his team lost to Boston United in the F. A. cup so he could've been forgiven for backing out but he didn't. See Gary Birtles about a lot in Notts. He lives a couple of roads away from my girlfriend. He loved his time at Town.
Met Kevin Keegan in a service station on the M62 when he was at Liverpool. Knew Town's result that day which impressed me.

Worked in a regional theatre ticket call centre around 15 years ago and sold panto tickets to ex Bolton, Hibs and Finland striker Mixu Paatelainen, Dev from Coronation Street rang up for any tickets we could donate to his charity and Judith Chalmers from the holiday programmes in the 80's called asking if there was any free tickets as she was Judith Chalmers.

Didn’t exactly meet him but was in a big queue For the toilets at a service station between rustenburg and Joberg after the England v USA game at the World Cup when arsene wenger walked out of the disabled toilet.

Only footballers I’ve met were Jones the Stick and that little fellah who moved to Australia, when we did a match all sponsorship in 2005.

Nearly bumped into Gary Lineker walking round a corner in a corridor in Great Ormond Street Hospital when I worked there in the 90s. I was surprised how small Lineker was. I was utterly star struck. Met Princess Di a few times when I was there too, but I have no idea about her ball control skillls.

Andy Tilson and Steve Sherwood attended two of our Schuberts FC awards night back around 89/90 , Tilson brought his Mrs along and stayed with us all night rather than just dashing in giving trophies and dashing off. Real decent guy.
Steve Sherwood didnt come across as the sharpest tool in the box , one of the lads said to him " i was watching highlights of you in Tenerife last week "  to which he said " i have never been to Tenerife" ....."no Steve, they were playing them behind the bar" ...  ;D

I have only met 2 people of equal importance:

Stuart Brace was on a train from Kings Cross in the early 1970s.  The team were coming back from a game at Aldershot.  I chatted to him very briefly and got his autograph.  Too overawed to say more. We were on a school trip coming back from Wembley after a school boy international (I think).  

The second was getting sworn at during a fight by the next king.  Less dramatic than it sounds.

It was about 1976/77.  I was in the RAF at Brize Norton and helping a mate to fit some avionics equipment to a VC10. As usual, we were dressed in scruff order.  My mate flicked a car aerial in my face as he was messing about.  I then had a mock fight with him.  We did not see this land rover stop near us.  Containing a detective and Prince Charles.  

As It was late in the day some airfield control gates has shut.  Prince Charles shouted “How do you get out of this bloody place?”.    I was too shocked to be bothered so just told him where the exit gate was.No salutes or anything.  You do not wear hats on an airfield.  (Prince Charles was on some sort of training course, which was known to airmen).

Had a chat with Gazza at a hotel in Gateshead  a few years ago. He was attending his sisters wedding reception, also there the lovely Linda Lusardi and Lawrie McMenemy.

Was sat next to ‎Phil Lynott at a Wembley international,England v Ireland,sad to say shortly before his death.A really nice guy.

I played in a five aside tournament with Chris Woods,he was 14 at the time and even at that age he was a great keeper.

Going down a narrow road a good few years back playing my rolling stones cassette,

A big 4x4 came the other way and pulled over to let me pass,

When I got level I said thank you and to my surprise the other driver was Bill Wyman.

He has a large mansion a few miles from my home.

Clever Bill bought it in the 60's for £66,000 and its worth £2-3 million now.

I sold Andre Kanchelskis an X Box and Nick Barnby various bits on his numerous visits to the shop I ran. Barnby seemed like a really nice lad who’d always have a bit of a chat.  

Sold John Gregory loads of stuff and got chatting to him and he was a massive Springsteen fan.

Over the years running big stores I’ve met lots of local pro players in the Towns and Cities I’ve worked in, pretty much all of them where relatively polite & average.

Bumped into Phil Neville last year at Marble Arch tube station

Away from football recently met Jonathan Davis and he was a miserable sod and Mal Maninga who was bloody brilliant,  Greg Rutherford who was really friendly.

Had dinner with Richard Branson and his dad, and a group of us as part of an award I won at work and over the years a few minor celebs.

1993 got VIP tickets to a U2 concert at Roundhay Park Leeds sat next to a blonde, so pretty turns out it was Malandra Burrows, she was with Peter Levy, didn't really pay attention because I was sat behind a ginger haired scot then Leeds and Scotland captain Gordon Strachan. Muvh more interesting than the blonde then went to meet Bono and the rest. Actually they waved from their helicopter. Then spent 4 hours trying to leave the car park.

Met Bobby George in The Blaydon Races, a karaoke bar in Tenerife in the 90s.
He was with his wife and wearing very little jewellery. ( unlike his darts and tv image).
I was on holiday with a few friends and family.
After a few beers my cousin, who had been glancing over at Bobby, strolled over and said " I know you, don't I"
" Well" replied Bobby in his soft modest voice " you might do"
"Thought so " said my cousin. "Did you used to drink in the Imp?"
He looked a bit confused, but nevertheless stayed and had a few beers with us and was a really nice chap.

John Stone used to come in my shop every day. Kevin Drinkell came in on a Saturday morning on his way to play for the juniors and bought 10 Benson &  Hedges. Steve Saunders lodged with me , Mark Lever lodged with my mother in law .I delivered newspapers to John McDermott and Steve ,Mark  and  Macca ate us out of biscuits !

Just forgot Tony Macklin bought a toy for his boys and Gerry  Marsden bought half a pound of Jelly Babies.

His eldest son who would have been about 7yrs old at the time, used to come round our house as he was pals with my son, footy mad he was so I ended up taking him to watch his dad play. My Mrs and Livvo's Mrs, would go down Cleethorpes to play bingo ( big bingo hall near train station, bet it's flattened now?). Lovely family, shame Livvo had his back problem as when it was under control he was a great player. Then again, if it had been a problem he could have kept under control, he would no doubt still have been at Chelsea or the likes. Happy days.

Met Ruud Van Nistelrooy in Maastrict in 1999. Had a few beers with him as he practiced his English just before he was due to sign for Man Utd. Felt his clicking knee, told him it was buggered but he claimed PSV said it would be fine.He got me and my mates tickets for PSV games. Top bloke to be fair and very grounded, head like a horse. He ended up tearing his ACL a day or two later in training. Anyway, he signed a beermat 'contract' to sign for town when he was 35. But he's 43 now the big snake.

George Best at some memorial game for a Scunt at the Old Sow Ground in the early 80's, he was mingling in the committee room after the game... I'm not a Scunt, he seemed quite small up close!

Prince Charles on the Cotwold Canal at some visit he did there, we were a staged working practical event he went round and he said "What are you doing Groooting?" which translated from Inbred Royal to English meant "What are you doing grouting?"  He looked like his Spitting Image puppet close up, umless it was a Spitting Image puppet!

Anyway about 30 years ago we was at a village fete and the little one from hello hello was the star opening the fete, We were all waiting for some parachute people to land and for 10-15 minutes she stood next to my wife and I chatting and she took a shine to our granddaughter who was about 4 at the time holding her hand and being really nice.

He works for the same company as me up in Tees, not managed to meet him in person yet but he is held in very high regard by everyone in the company. I think football is a very sour point with him as he apparently doesn't like to talk about it. I'm not sure if it's anything to do with his time at town but I really hope he realises how much of a legend he is with Town fans and I always tell anyone that works with him to pass that message on to him

Back in the sixties went on school trip to watch schoolboy  international at Wembley. On the way back  was on the Kings Cross -Cleethorpes train the whole team was on it having played Orient that day.Charlie Wright helped himself to my egg sandwich.

I used to play ( all above board!,) with Dave Worthingtons son Gary .......he went in to be a good player. Lived in Beacon court in Cleethorpes.
I met Harry Wainman the other day at Beacon medical and we spoke about a game I went to at Workington......they had a player called Tony Gedmentis who I’m sure a Harry saved his penalty .......
I met Stuart Brace at his “company house” in Twyning place........and also John Macey at his house......autograph hunting!!
Keith Brown used to work with me at KP in Grimsby......he scored a beauty at the pontoon end once.....if you ever see him he will tell you all about it.....

N.B. Non-Town and not even football but I think amusing and illustrating the difficulty different generations have in explaining to one another, different experiences.

About 6-7 years ago my daughter aged about 17-18 worked in a hotel in Sheffield where people performing in said City sometimes stayed.  She was often invited to go to their concerts, sometimes she went, sometimes she didn’t.
One phone call, I asked if she’d been to any recently, she said as it happened she been invited that night to one but probably wouldn’t go because she’d never heard of the women and couldn’t remember her name.
Next call, she asked if I’d remembered she had been invited but actually did go to the concert with her friend.  They were invited back-stage afterwards where daughters friend fell off a high heel, twisted an ankle and had to go to A&E. “Dad she even broke the shoe !!!”  The woman performer organised a taxi and went with them to A&E.
At A&E, my daughter said, “...people kept coming up to the woman pestering for autographs. You know Dad she really WAS famous” l asked “Well, who was she ?” “Debbie Harry”......
.........Wish I’d met her when I was 17ish............
They exchanged a few Emails afterwards (which I wouldn’t have done)

She also got a £50-note tip for taking a pot of tea, as part of room-service, up to The Saint (unfortunately not Ian St.John but Roger Moore)

Shared a few drinks with Gary Birtles in Swindon a few years ago. Wouldnt let me or the mrs buy a drink and he said the time spent playing for time was a highlight of his career. Said the town fans were amongst the most passionate he’d seen in his career and spoke very highly of sir Alan of Buckleyshire

Saw Michael Reddy after a game in Sainsbury’s in Welholme Road in 2005. As a young lad I was too nervous to talk to him, he noticed me and smiled and said hello, which was nice.

Met Gary Neville in Manchester outside his hotel after I was at an event there. There were a lot of people around and only I noticed him. Asked him for a picture and he agreed then ran off the second the picture was taken.

Went on a couple of nights out with Marcus Rashford’s sister. Wish I’d never. It was like she thought SHE was the professional footballer.

Captain Sensible asked me to buy him a pint at the Winter Gardens when the Damned played there.

My Dad met Prince Charles when he visited Grimsby. We have a photo of them together.

I met Princess Daina when she visited our work. I was the last person to present one of my cases to her. She had been meeting people, shaking hands and listening to otherb officers all day before she got to me.

She was not only beautiful and charming but she listened attentively and showed both interest and understanding by asking highly relevant questions.

I told her about a Proceeds of Crime order where the convicted man had still not paid anything. She looked at a surveillance photo on the presentation board I had prepared and commented 'he wants to sell some of those 4x4s then'

A magic 10 minutes and a photo I treasure

My wife goes up to Newcastle to meet family every year.
Four years ago she was in Waterstones book shop in the city centre with her sister when she saw Pavel Srníček signing his new book "Pavel is a Geordie".

It was quiet at the time so my wife got the chance to speak to him for a good five minutes.

My wife mentioned to him that I am an avid Grimsby supporter, he laughed and remembered the time when he played at Blundell Park and Newcastle thrashed us.

She said he was a really nice man.

Sadly we heard he had suffered a cardiac arrest only a few days later whilst out jogging and died a few days later.
