Listened to one of Peter Crouch's podcasts earlier and he made reference to coming on as a sub in the Champions League final for Liverpool in 2007.

I'd have never have imagined he'd have played in a CL final after seeing him as a young lad play for QPR against us at Loftus Rd. He could do everything but score that afternoon.

It got me thinking...how many players, who've been named in a Champions League final squad have faced the Mariners?

Including Crouch, I can think of four - but there may be more. Over to you lot...

Palace. Think it was his league debut. More notably, Mark Nicholls won us a pen by falling over his own feet.

Obvious one - Steve McManaman.

(Even scored! In the CL final. Not against us)

I imagine most of those Forest players will have played against Town at some point in their careers.

And one of them managed against us in a hilarious 6-1 win.

Going by his wiki page it seems he went on to Colchester and Aldershot after us before heading up to Scotland he's then floated around the London-area non-league scene until 2016 but it shows him playing a couple of games in 2019 too.

I didn't realise that he played that many games for Chelsea!

I was thinking of Bradford the season before, but yes, Burnley too.

(And possibly in the 80s too?)

Also, Michael Carrick (unless my memory is tricking me I think he played against us for Spurs?)

Waddle played against us for Newcastle when he was 19,

I was sat in the main stand and there were a couple of Newcastle fans in front of us,

I asked them who is that young kid he is some player ?

They replied Chris Waddle.

See I can spot a good player when I see one .  ;D

Harry Kewell (played against us for Leeds in the FA Cup in 1997)
Steve Finnan (played against us for Fulham in 1999)

At a guess a few who played for Leeds in the 1975 final or for Forest / Villa (if we are counting the European Cup before it was branded as the CL) also (people like Trevor Cherry or Jimmy Rimmer)

Not about squads, but The Mariners do have a connection which we may or may not like to contemplate.

Scorer at the time of the fastest Champions League hat trick (9 minutes) v. Rosenborg 1995-96.  It
was also the first hat trick by an English player in the newly branded UEFA Champions League.

Whether we want to remember him or not...........Mike Newell..

                    Cheers, I’ll have a pint !

In answer to OP's question I guess we can conclude that there are dozens and dozens of European Cup final players that have played against Town.

I remember going with my dad to see Town v Shrewsbury in the early 90s and he pointed out that the Shrews players Gary Shaw had won the European Cup with Villa in the early 80s. I was in awe initially but he hardly got a kick. Pretty sure we won 1-0 with a Tommy Watson goal.
