Was up at the Scottish Cup replay last night at Gayfield to watch Arbroath play Auchinleck Talbot.

I went up early doors so I could have a look around the harbour area and the traditional smoke house outlets. As I turned to drive into the area I noticed a signpost saying I was entering East Grimsby, which is a small part of Arbroath. Not only that, but a number of streets in the area had "gate" at the end of the name - like Brighowgate, Bargate etc do in Grimsby. I wasn't aware of any links between the two towns, but with the predominant industry being fish in Arbroath it's not inconceivable that there may be something. Does anyone know please?

Arborath's ground is the only one in the UK closer to the North Sea than Grimsby's!

I've been following Arbroath from a distance for many years now, for no other reason than I thought they were our Scottish equivalents (lower league, sometimes punching above their weight, on the east coast, fishing heritage, etc). Not aware of any 'official' links though.

What's funny is that about six years ago I went on honeymoon to Tromso in Norway and only when we arrived I discovered the town is twinned with Grimsby — they even have a road named after us! I rang NE Lincs council to ask about the relationship between Grimsby and Tromso, and how it came about, and they basically said they didn't know!

There's a North, West and South Grimsby in Arbroath too. No idea of any link between the two Towns though, apart from the obvious fishing link.

I think they are more like just streets in Arbroath rather than areas. There's also a Grimsby Place.

Didn’t that Christmas tree come from Tromso each year?

Just googled 'Arbroath Grimsby' and it seems there a North Grimsby area, a West Grimsby one and even a street called Grimsby Place!

The tree is a thankyou from WWII isn't it? Whether there was a legion from Grimsby posted near there or something I don't know.

Most likely to do with Viking links . Wouldn't be surprised to learn that both places have similar Viking histories. By means place so Grim's place whilst the ending gate comes from the Viking 'gata' meaning way

Great thread! Now I've got a Scottish team to support.

I'm of the era where I didn't fully realize there were other teams in Scotland apart from Celtic and Rangers till about my mid-thirties...

I always look out for Forfar's result, spent a weekend there when the open (golf) was at Carnoustie, lovely old hotel, floor sloped so by the morning all the blood had run into my head.

I always look out for Brechin City's result (not really sure why :) ), even been to see them play twice.

Having said that I might have to find another Scottish LEAGUE team to take an interest in, the way this season is going.

I've been doing a bit of reading and can't find any even tedious viking link. Could be more to do with them being Scotlands biggest fishing port and us the world's back in our heydays.

Would be interesting to find a local historian from up there to clarify the matter. Maybe they have a forum someone could enquire on?

Did we get Matt Tees from Arbroath ?

I keep watching the Sottish results hoping to see Forfar 4 East Fife 5 ;)

Airdrie. My first Town hero. What a great buy.

Went to see them a few years back in the Scottish cup v Edinburgh University. A few of us went to see a mate who lives in Perth, but the St Johnstone game got called off.

Us all having a pass out, we got the train (replacement bus) to Arbroath and had a smokie and a few beers.

Highlight was the Uni centre forward, must have been a postgrad as he was about 45 (in age and in stone). He was getting stick all day, but then out of nowhere turned on a sixpence and chipped the keeper from about 35 yards.

If you think BP is cold on a winter's evening Gayfield is about ten degrees worse. Coldest I've ever been.

Wonder what happened to that striker ..hmmm..

Last weekend, I was in the Bon Accord pub, (lost 36 - 0 to Arbroath once I believe) on the way to watching Partick Thistle beat Penicuik Athletic in the Scottish Cup. 8)

I've asked about this on an Arbroath Facebook page and someone posted this. Seems like it goes right back to Norse times and streets were names as such.
