Plenty of rain and spray on the M1 coming down.

Just damp and miserable here but pitch looks fine.

GTFC XI: McKeown (c), Hewitt, Davis, Waterfall, Gibson, Hessenthaler, Robson, Clifton, Cook, Hanson, Green.

Subs: Russell, Whitehouse, Rose, Cardwell, Ring, Ogbu, Starbuck.

Would rather Cook was on the bench and we start Ogbu. But can't complain too much if we're playing a 433 thats as strong a side as we can put out at the moment.

Dunno if that’s a 4-3-3 or a 4-3-1-2 but it’s about the best side he could’ve put out in the circumstances. Hold your breath folks.

About the best we could hope for given the injury situation. ..looks more like people playing in their natural positions, that's gotta be a positive

Hope it’s a decent game for you arry, that’s dedication going down there after what’s happened this last week or two and with our poor run we are on too, let’s hope Town get the win 👍

For me it should be more 4-3-1-2 with Cook in the hole (as opposed to toad).

But it would not surprise me if Green and Cook are the "wide" players, which would be pointless as neither of them are. If it is 4-3-1-2 a lot of onus on the fullbacks to get forward.

Ironically this is the formation that Jolley had started pre-season with but soon abandoned in favour of a 4-3-3 (with no real wingers except Max W).

Lets hope a few more pegs in the holes they should be in will work.

We have played well in parts, its just we've done nothing with it and they've score 2 from 3 chances. Our defending has been shocking today even for us.

Watching this and  Town to be fair are knocking it about well and creating chances. Good to see that we are keeping it on the deck. Much more pleasing on the eye. We should have scored at least 2 ourselves
Very unlucky to be 2 down

I disagree that it’s been dreadful, we’ve played better than we have in a while. Just goes to show that you need to take your chances though, but at least we are creating them. We are playing away against a form side and we have caused them some problems. Its certainly not been hoofball, some good approach play at times let down by poor crossing.
Posted by: Tommy, November 23, 2019, 3:55pm; Reply: 49
Played well in the 1st half despite being 2 down.

We've played more football and shown more movement off the ball than I've seen for a long time. Should've scored a few ourselves.

Clifton, who looks like he's playing as the deeper of the midfield 3, needs to be disciplined and sit in front of the back 4. Otherwise he's not doing too bad in that role.

Limbrick definitely wants to use Hess higher up the pitch doesn't he. He's played higher in these 2 games rather than being the sitter.

Keep creating chances in the second half and can get back into this.

Stupid and cheap shot. Disappointed as I am with the scoreline to say we playing with have no bottle and mention Hess in the same breadth is ridiculous and typical. Aside from two bits of shite defending we are the better team, playing more football I have seen for a while and creating four decent chances two of which should have been put away.

Doesn't bother me FOOW.

I thought we played some of our best football in a long while just let down by poor defending for their first with giving them a free header.

Second looked from where I am sitting as a foul on Macca and seeing his reaction he must have thought so.

We should have been 2 or even 3 up with better finishing.

Looks a long way back now though.🙄

A bit harsh on us being two down

We’ve played better than the score suggests

Same old story though. A bit of luck on their part & a defence which gets pulled out of position and there’s the difference between being up at the top of the league & down near the bottom

We’ve passed it better but zero quality in the final 3rd and conceded 2 goals one a free header one a cross that Hess didn’t seem interested in stopping then 2 or 3 Town players fannying about until the ball went into the net. I’d swop Moses for Cooke.

Its a bit unfair with the scoreline at the moment, but as others have said,we need to take our chances and score. Agree with Golfer that Macca shouldn't be captain, always thought that a midfielder with experience should have the arm band. At the moment, we need a bit of luck, and maybe bring Moses on to shake that middle and top third up, taking the game to them. Were 2 down, and we have no option but to put the pressure on. And, its the first time ive heard my 11 year old grandson swear at a match, sorry neighbouring fans. Feeding him oxtail soup and cheese n onion butty. Lets hope for some goals 2nd half :)

I'd argue it's been better quality in the final third that has created more chances than we're used to creating. Just the finishing touch with each one hasn't found the net.

We need a new manager who can appraise the squad without any bias. Sadly Limbrick will have been involved, in some way, to last summers recruitment and some players are lacking. It's all well and good MJ berating the budget but he knew what it was and it should have been spent wisely. Too much dependance on loan players is not the way forward IMO.

Defensive errors in many games losing you points and games.

Being unlucky, playing well in parts and missing good chances just stops you scoring and maybe winning the odd game.

Chesterfield had 3 games in hand at the end of the season.  They did not convert these chances and were relegated.  We fortunately contributed to that.

For us 7 points from 3 games in hand does not get us in the top 11 teams.  Play-0ff dreams need to be put to bed now.

Until confirmed otherwise, we are in relegation trouble.  Even our neighbours have moved above us.

I wasn't there but there was one we used to sing in the early 70's to the tune, "Tiptoe through the tulips" by Tiny Tim.
It went, "Tiptoe through the pontoon, with your boots on, and your sawn off shotgun. Tiptoe through the pontoon with me."
Often immediately followed with, "Shoot the illegitimates, shoot the illegitimates, shoot shoot shoot."
The boots refers to DM's that were de rigeur in those days. I remember at least one game where the police made many take them off and watch the match in their stocking feet!

I have just plucked up the courage to watch the highlights.

What a disappointment Cook has been. In the first few seconds of those highlights he twice loses the ball in dangerous areas with a sloppy touch. He runs a lot, mainly to try to retrieve his own mistakes, but what does he think he is trying to achieve? It is months since he had any positive impact on a game.

What actually is his preferred position?

Just frustrated as the rest of us town fans - no big deal really - a great turn out from the 597 - some interesting chants from the rowdy young uns - what’s the one about going into the pontoon with a sawn off shot gun??

Frustrated!!!! They were embarrassing pr***s.

Makes a change, it was the team who were embarrassing in the previous match

I thought Clifton was excellent. When he brings his A game the energy on show seems to cajole his team mates around him to match his efforts and add another ten percent.

All in all a much better performance, we passed it about confidently and actually looked like a team with a plan. But Northampton are very good, full of confidence and on a role. And crucially, incisive. Unfortunately unlike early in the season when we go behind it looks like that's it. We need the strikers finishing their chances then maybe we will get that belief back that we still in it.

Think we'll be alright if we keep it stupid simple.

Maybe that's our main problem, the players aren't always giving 100%,  at our level the players are never going to be silky skilful players but without the effort then they are always going to be second best.

The squad filling out with players coming back from the treatment table can only help matters - to be able to change personnel in the wide positions of the front three to Rose and Ogbu meant we didn't weaken ourselves.

Our talisman saviour 😉 Super Max Wright coming back into the fray sooner rather than later too all being well.

Ogbu did his best to set up a couple of Northampton attacks.

He should be banned from back passes and touching the ball in our half.

He seemed like he had been told to pass pass pass (like the rest of the team) so didn't go on any of his mazy runs. And as such I think he went against dome of his natural urges and ended up passing more sideways or backwards than his pile forward style.

But him and Rose although not being ultimately effective did give Northampton something to think about, especially when others got forward to assist them with their forward pressure.

He should be given some licence to do what he does (as well as considering the passing game Limbrick trying to implement) which is to cause panic and havoc but admittedly defensively can leave us in trouble, especially in a formation where the wide man is supposed to drop back and support his fullback.

But he a wildcard, a bit of a flair player who a useful squad player to have (Imo). Can be frustrating but I like him and think there plenty to come from him if given chance. I don't think he's fully at ease yet, not fully confident or feeling at home - a few times I see him take worrying glances towards us fans for me a reminder that backing and encouraging the players (and attempts to get forward positively), even if it doesn't come off is going to help more than heckling. Especially when confidence is low.

I could see they trying, unwavering support and encouragement from us will help build that togetherness and comeraderie again instead of itching for the latest boo boy to fail.

I mildly and briefly clapped the players off at the end, whereas others booed. Don't agree with booing, I'd just walk off in silence if not happy but I've seen far far far worse performances and effort over the last couple of decades.
