Very close game then?

Another good result.  Encouraging.  They already need tougher opposition.

Was weird to see the same 2 teams against each other from last week when it was slightly closer but the pressure of the BP pitch, crowd and expectency mustve been immense for the womens team. Lets not forget that some of them are only 16! Today they played so much better and put Barton to the sword. Fitter and more skillful indivdually. Personelly very pleased for no 9 Beth Wharton who became the 1st player in history to get a hattrick for the team in a competitive fixture. Also captain Sophie Bartup's 25 yarder into the top bin was superb. Onwards and upwards to Louth away next.

Got to say well done you can only beat who your facing, but lets face it having watched some highlights from the the last Barton game it looks like Sunday league level stuff a couple of the Barton players looked about 16 stone and no taller than 5'8. Not having a go because its girls it just looked very amateur level to me.

Have you ever played in front of 500 people? No, didn't think so.

Saying “not having a go” after digging some poor lasses out over their weight doesn’t quite work how you think it does.

This is a group of people - players, coaches, etc - who are proudly representing GTFC and giving opportunities to women where there weren’t any 6 months back. Doing a decent job of it too with 3 wins in 3. Not entirely sure what you were expecting?

Some strange views/comments on this - I get that the club don’t always do things right - but on this topic not sure what more people want??

Maybe a bit late to the party in terms of getting things looked at a bit more ‘professionally’ than other clubs but process has started now. As Ska says opportunities for local ladies, may take time for things to build and as standard goes up maybe players from further afield introduced - but who’s to say those playing now, growing/learning as a group - can’t improve as they go?

Re crowd pressure/nerves - I’d imagine it is a factor, particularly other week at BP. Decent crowd and a fair bit of pressure given location and coverage, first game in stadium etc etc. It must’ve been a great experience and hopefully one that they learn from, but more importantly enjoyed. And their families and those who support.

Only good things can come of this - improvement, local connection, more participation etc etc. Give them a chance

It is very amateur level matey. It's the lowest tier of women's football. That's where they have to start and that's their level as you saw on the highlights. To put things into perspective, Clee Town ladies won this Lincs league last year and now sit bottom of the league above having lost every game. They have had girls/ladies teams at most age groups for the past few years now, all with the aim of getting the youth and prospects into the open age full 1st team and that is how difficult things are for females in the game especially at grass roots level. Town have only just started and have a relatively small squad. I will say that it seems we are the best team at the lowest level tho' and have a very young squad as oppose to old hags just off the school run smerkin' tabs! They are not England ladies but are representing the club very professionally and with a 100% record in league and cup they can't do much more.
If anyone's in Louth on Sunday then take the dog for a stroll down to London Road at 2PM and give them a go UTM

I see there's an interview with Beth Wharton on the OS with the headline "Meet The Girl Who Scored The First GTFC Hat-Trick".

I appreciate that Beth is only 16 or 17, but it extremely sexist to call her a "girl". I never saw the OS describe Matt Pollock as a "boy" when he played when only 17 years old. In fact I can't recall ever seeing a gender specific term to describe a player from the men's team. It shows a level of unconscious sexism.

And it is also extremely patronising. The story is basically that Beth Wharton managed to score a hat-trick despite only being a girl.

Give over, I had girl friends (if I was lucky) at 16/17.

Typical political correctness gone mad, trying to make something out of nothing at all.

No suggestion of 'only being a girl' at all. At different points in the article ,and comments above, the words 'womens' ,'ladies', girls and ladies/girls are used. There is no sexism , unconscious or otherwise. Perhaps you could advise which words are woke enough in whatever context. Meanwhile, my 68 year old wife will continue to organise her 'Nights out with the girls', most of whom are older than her. Lighten up 'young man' !

Your more than welcome to wonder down to London Road on Sunday to watch Grimsby Ladies , parking is limited so please car share were possible as there is little street parking, the venue will have hot food and beverages with alcoholic drinks available in the function room (available for hire!) and admission is free, but please do not bring your dog as they are not permitted on the playing arena. Hopefully there will be good support and all will be suitably impressed with the county's premier sporting complex!

Incidentally Golly. It's Grimsby Town Women FC. Much less sexist than 'Ladies' with its conotations of Victorian domesticity*

* Or chaps with grey moustaches in dresses proclaiming 'I'm a lady' that the name Louth Old Boys Ladies conjures up (or maybe that's just me).

Spot on KM. I did notice the use of “ladies” across this thread, but didn’t want to call it out myself. Another good example of unconscious sexism though.

And it’s funny how treating all people fairly and equally and not discriminating is “political correctness”. It’s not. It’s respecting all people equally. Basic good manners.

So Golly are you actually aware that the person concerned has issues regarding the article ? Or have you just decided that they were but are not capable of registering their own displeasure and have decided to patronise them by being offended yourself ?  Perhaps the person concerned may be offended by your remarks !!!!

* Please note that no reference has been made to any specific gender or age in this post.

I am not offended in the slightest. But that doesn't mean that it is wrong to call out sexism whether deliberate or unconscious. It shouldn't always be the victim or target of discrimination who has to call it out.

And your argument is daft. It's like saying if Raheem Sterling gets racially abused in Bulgaria he's the only one who can find it offensive.

Whether you want to admit it or not the OS would never call an individual player from the men's team a "boy" whether he was 16,17 or 38. It's patronising to women who play sport and plays to the suggestion that women are the weaker sex.

Ok. So you’ve never heard of the ‘Youth’ team then. ???

And in ‘physical ability’, generally speaking women are the weaker sex. Are you an advocate for all sports to be mixed then.

Let’s have a non gender Wimbledon competition should we. All in it as equals.
Sure some of the women wound progress. But let’s see the percentage of men to women in the last sixteen shall we ?
Call me sexist but I know which side my monies on.

And using the Stirling example is like comparing apples and oranges and sell you know it. I am offended by racism and by sexism. But quite frankly you are looking for it where it doesn’t exist and all you do is make things actually worse. I’m sure you have good intentions but that doesn’t make it right.

I’d be very surprised if any offence was meant by use of the term ‘girl’ in the OS article. It often isn’t but it’s how it’s received that counts. Sometimes the person who is subject to bias (whether conscious or unconscious) is not in a comfortable position to call it out themselves. So there is an onus on other people to call it out when they see it. But then how the ‘calling out’ is done can also be a sensitive issue.

Personally I’m not sure ‘girl’ in this context is offensive. We do refer to ‘lads’ or ‘boys’ when we’re talking or singing about men’s teams. I’d be interested in any views from female footballers on the subject.

I agree with Golly in that political correctness is about good manners and sensitivity (I know I can be an insensitive git at times). Call it what you like, but it’s much better than political incorrectness.

I used to get offended when 'MAKE SOME NOISE FOR THE BOYS' appeared on the scoreboard in the 90s.

Confusing times for everyone and sensitivity is key. I met three old school pals this week for a hike in Derbyshire. Two are rather  quiet and reserved. We shook hands. The guy who organised our get together embraced all of us in his usual style, which is fine by me. When he greets my wife she feels slightly uncomfortable as she has only met him a few times. Hugging is not normal for a formal greeting in Hillsborough. I've often wondered what our heroes such as Tony Rees and Livvo would make of the huddles and 'pile ons' todays players indulge in. Perhaps they all sign consent forms?

Yeah, that does sound a bit too much.  ;D

I can remember the older generation moaning about hugging and kissing goal celebrations in the 70s. Buckley's team's response was a bit of throw back to an earlier age. Quick handshake and jog back to your own half for the re-start. Mr Cholmedley-Warner and Grayson would have approved.

To be fair to Grayson, it took the pros a few years before they were consistently beating the amateurs. Corinthian Casuals are still 12-6 up on aggregate against Manchester United

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/2383932/Corinthian-suffer-centenary-defeat.html

I went to this match (the 2004 one cheeky gets) - my mate (a Town and CCFC fan) was the one who wrote to Alec Ferguson to suggest a rematch of the 1904 game. Flipping hot day. Fortunately had lots of cold liquids to help with the heat .(sharabi)(sharabi)(sharabi)(sharabi)
