I've been trying to remember some things about a certain store space in St.Peter's Ave recently and been debating some facts with a friend so maybe somebody can remember some things to settle it. The store now is Sainsbury's Local but I believe it's been a few different supermarket brands over the years.

1. The main point of debate was that I recall it being a Presto when I was a kid in the 80's-early 90's and I also recall going to a cafe above it with my mum. My friend doesn't remember Presto at all and thinks it was Sommerfield. I think it probably turned into that so I still say it was Presto first. He also doesn't recall the cafe. Can anyone confirm this and better yet does anyone have some photos of the avenue during that time which shows the store and cafe?

2. What was it before Presto and since then before it was Sainsbury's?

3. As a bonus question, what was the fancy dress shop at the bottom of Issacs's Hill before that? That's an awesome looking building.

I believe the shop with the cafe above was Lipton's.

The fancy dress shop was the YEB showroom. You could but your electrical appliances or pay your electric bill there.

Yep, classic Art Deco building the old electricity showroom. Wasn’t there a dance school above the shop at one point? Maybe even Clifton’s?

Talking of supermarkets down the Avenue, anyone else remember Maypole? I used to think that the round pillar with all the colourful little tiles in that shop doorway was the maypole.

I'll ask my old lady next time I see her. 1970 she can remember. She has more problems with 5 minutes ago though bless her.

I used to stack shelves at the Fine Fare supermarket, (where the Co-op is now) in 1970. Also used to help myself to the odd packet of fags on the way out at 6.30pm as there was nobody around and they were on open display right next to the cashier's tills.The muzak they played in there was abominable.

The Maypole was the restaurant above the supermarket, I think the Boots store at the other end of the block was Woolworth's at one time but could be wrong.

My uncle got married in the church where the car park is now next to Boots, can't remember what it was called?

Woolies was in the High St (in what eventually became Weatherspoons before moving across the road to the 'new' block in the 70s). Don't remember it down the Avenue.

That church (with a spire) was another Methodist place, alongside St Andrew's. Think they merged. But like you I can't remember its name  :(
