Guessing 532 with Ring as a left centre half and Hewitt defensive midfield?

i'd have to agree with you Hagrid, that's pretty poor on the paying customer.  I'd have thought this sort of change would have been done for the checka trade, not for the Carabao, when a decent crowd 3000+ turn up.

This cup will need scrapping soon, even league 2 sides are putting reserve teams out for it 🤷🏼‍♂️

£22 and not a recognised centre mid in the 11. When did we get the the stage that we could field a weakened team? Let’s not forget who we are!

Ridiculous amount of changes. I know the league is a priority but Its only ruddy three games in. All for giving a run out for those that haven't started but balance it with decent options on the bench. Happy to be proved wrong though.

Think this shows we need to get at least 1 more CM in asap. An injury to any of Hess, Clifton or Whitehouse we are in trouble.

Ring and Gibson fullback. Hendrie and Hewit in Midfield.  Looks 4 3 3 to me.

4-4-2 with ring left mid, hewitt and Cooke in the centre and wright on the right, ogbu and vernam up front
Posted by: sam gy, August 13, 2019, 7:41pm; Reply: 13
I appreciate frustrations from fans paying full price, but I do think it’s a tad harsh/disrespectful to some of the players to label this a reserve team...especially as we’re only two games into the season and therefore don’t know what our first team will end up looking like.

We want to see the youth given a chance so in come Pollock and Wright.

Cook and Vernam are good players at this level and deserve a chance to play...also we need them match fit and firing after missing a chunk of pre season.

Gibson and Ring are respectively victims of injury and Hewitts amazing crosses from the right/Hendries general amazing ability to play anywhere and both deserve a game.

Rose is injured, Ohman is injured/under precaution. In come Ogbu and Pollock.

I think it’s fair to say that Whitehouse and Hanson should be managed properly/not risked.

If we’re gonna have a good season, we need a fit and competitive squad.

Gibson can play centre back, Hewitt can play midfield so can Cook and Hendrie. I’m guessing three CBS, Gibson, Pollock and Davis, Ring and Wright as wide midfielders, Hendrie and Hewitt central with Vernam, Ogbu and Cook up front in a 3-4-3 but pleased I haven’t paid 22 quid for the privilege

....and plenty want to see Max Wright get a start. And Pollock.

Yeah it's a lot of changes but:

a) it's a squad game. Good chance to keep everyone involved for morale and spirit of the whole squad if nothing else. Show everyone they're all a part of it. Good chance to get people off and running after having pre season then not playing for 2 weeks.

b) the lads that have come in tonight are hardly such inferior players and will probably all be needed to play a part over the season.

c) we could have a decent cup run but its league form and league position MJ will be judged on. So I understand him prioritising the league by using the cup to give minutes to players who need them.

7 changes to the starting team and two of the 4 are playing in different positions as well. We're playing 4-3-3 and midfield is underpowered, to say the least (two full-backs and a striker in there theoretically!). Gibson struggling at left-back as well so probably not fully fit at present.

Donny have been the better by a good amount without creating too much. Lots of shots outside the box, a couple of good saves by McKeown, one excellent to keep us in front.

Well-taken breakaway goal for us with Cook and Ogbu playing it off well and then Vernam forced a couple of saves. I think we'll need to play better in the second half to win this one or even get to penalties so I wonder what subs we might make?
Posted by: toontown, August 13, 2019, 8:46pm; Reply: 39
Well taken goal by Cooke after a good run from him and a nice layoff from ogbu. Unsurprisingly given all the changes we have looked pretty disjointed.

We looked a lot better organised in the second half and deserved to win overall. Just a pity we didn't make more of the few attacking opportunities which we created. The final ball or touch just wasn't quite good enough.

Very solid performance considering most of the starters were effectively 'reserves'.

Went last week for game v Inter Milan and it is pretty unbelievable and viewing is absolutely fantastic. As an aside boarded train at Eltham Lock and was quickly joined by three guys one of whom was wearing a town shirt. Had great chat with them on train and outside the ground when I bumped into them again. Thought we struggled with the system first half , allowed Donny too much space out wide and didn't retain the ball well enough. Settled into it and grew in confidence.

Great counter attack goal, Cook ( who played very well in the centre ) broke up play and went directly forward....with options either side he exchanged passes with Ogbu and finished smartly, midway in our half to back of the net in seconds, fantastic goal.
Vernam went close not long after forcing a good save out of their keeper, just had Macca had made a wonder save moments before that.

Second half it looked like Jolley had got a quick coaching session in at half time as the shape worked smarter to close the width out and as a result Donny looked blunt and were forced backwards and sideways before ultimately giving up posession, all the side started to look at ease with the shape and their roles within it.
Various changes in personnel and positions didnt shake the solidity and apart from a few nervy moments at the death Donny hardly troubled us in the second half.

Given it was a team of arguably fringe/ squad players its clear the 4-3-3 system is being drilled into all and that all the players are willing to graft for each other.  Wright, Ogbu, Cook, Pollock looked first team ready...Gibson looked a little shakey at first with the ball but settled into it , Vernam was Vernam, bright spots and anonymous spots.

Jolley has definately got this group focussed and working hard.  Good to see.  UTM

This is all about the squad and every player tonight is capable of and would be expected to figure in the matchday squad/team at some point. The only way they can demonstrate what they can do is under match conditions and that is also the only way they can be " match fit ".

The chap in the Town shirt was Graham Precious ex Mariners Trust board member and a top bloke..

The technicians were there during the game and further adjustments were being made after the match. As in all things like this some fine tuning is required to get everything set up correctly.

I think there was a small financial windfall as well. I read that there is 5k awarded for a first round win and we get half the crowd receipts which wont be too bad if 2500 were paying full price

The town shirt wearer was from Kirton Lindsey and has a passion for visiting as many football grounds as possible and pretty sure he told me he was approaching 160 different ones.

Would love to go back with Town in the two legged semi-final 😩😄😄😄

I was one of the three. Good to meet you. I met Graham at Brimsdown having gone to see Brentford the day before and went back with him. As Barralad said, Graham is a good bloke.

I was well impressed with the Spurs ground. Last time I saw them play at home was 1988. Fantastic view where we were. We bumped into quite a few folk from the Grimsby area on the day.

I think Graham has seen Town at 160 grounds. Not sure how many grounds I've seen Town at but I'm in the 200s for all clubs visited. Graham has already asked me to sort him out for a ticket at Brentford's new ground next season! For once Grimsby and Bees' home games haven't clashed much so I'm getting some last home games in at Griffin Park whilst holding a season ticket for Town.

Fond memories of GP. Town will always be my team but I did visit GP a lot when I lived down there and have really good friends at  Brentford.

Salford will be my fourth new ground this year after Grantham, Scarborough and Spurs and I think Spurs just get the nod.

We spoke to quite a few Spurs fans and they were very friendly and weren't abashed to bring up our win against them in 2005. Great day out.
