Personally I think players will be more difficult to attract this season. Going into last season we had the momentum of Jolley's great escape in the last 10 games as something to build on.

Fast forward a year and we have the same manager but stuttered to a 17th place finish, scored very few goals. In fact, you take 4 games out of it (Yeovil, Notts County, Tranmere, Newport) and goals for column is even shambolic.

There is no momentum and if we want to attract up and coming players, our plodding along is not going to help their career as we look like falling through the trap door sooner rather than later.  We are favourites for relegation and Jolley can't deny responsibility for our league position last season.

IMO I wouldn't take any notice of being relegation candidates.  Why us? seeing that we didn't finish as low as some others.  Yes we didn't score enough goals, but how many chances did we create, i'm pretty sure we have got more results if we had taken more of those chances.  Macclesfield would be favourites for me, purely based on financial issues (non payment of wages) which might impact on signing of players.

We didn't finish as low as others but look at the circumstances. Morecambe confess to having a tiny budget whilst it is constantly banded about that ours is "competitive". You have to look at what is being done to compensate for the poor finish. FGR had ambition and threw money at it to finish in the play offs. Notts County being full of disinterested journeymen bought Macclesfield a reprieve but as a young player, I would jump up at the chance to work with Sol Campbell and Andy Cole, even if they may get sacked come November. If a team like Macclesfield or Morecambe go down it is sort of expected so doesn't look as disastrous on the CV as being involved in a relegated Notts County team for example.

Judging by Jolley's recruitment so far I think we will be trying to sign players from this league and above rather than taking a punt on some players from below who have had to work hard and know what it is like to work a full day to make ends meet. A player from below would jump up at the opportunity of a chance in the league whereas a player from this league or the one above might think a bad season could be the end of them as a professional footballer.

It has been awfully quiet from the club and given how much further along we were this season as opposed to last, I would have expected some bodies through the door by now.

I don’t recall us ever doing a lot of business early, and I think it’s largely related to having a mediocre, at best, budget to work with.

The reality is that better players will have interest from a number of clubs and are in no rush to make a decision in case a better offer comes along. The only way around that really is throw enough money at them that they simply can’t afford not to accept it on the spot.

Evidently, we’re not going to be doing that which does mean that you wait longer and / or miss out on your main targets. As others have called out, there’s a difference between hope and expectation but I’m certainly not expecting anything different to the last few summer transfer windows; a couple of interesting looking signings and a base of solid but ultimately unexciting ones, and maybe a left field punt or two.

I don’t think that will be enough to take us from where we are to anything like troubling the play-offs, and though I’d love to be proved wrong I just can’t make a case for it.

Northampton have signed Nicky Adams and Alan McCormack today. Two quality signings. A double signing like that on top of that Warburton lad they signed means they're OFFICIALLY GOING FOR IT™. Expect them to be pushing for promotion this season.

Thing is we cant compete with the likes of some in league 2 who pay decent wages but if its a choice between 2 clubs that are offering similar wages I think our history will play to our advantage. Hence players would love to play for Grimsby and more so if they have a connection to the area in some capacity eg family/friends.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I’m not sure our history has much pulling power these days. Most players are barely old enough to remember us being a second tier team.

Anyway, I’m happy with our business so far.

But just remember how many on this board were saying how good Notts County would be with the team they had on paper. We all know what happened to them.

If we have a bit of success this season by reaching the play offs at least,

Better players will want to sign for us because either we will be in L1 next season or will have a good chance of promotion the following season if we have just missed out.

Thats as long as MJ stays with us and is not lured away by a big club like Shrewsbury. ;)

I actually think if we don't sign another player before the window slam shuts we have a better squad, including the young guns coming through, than we've had since being back in the league...

The squad last year may be likeable but they were rubbish and nowhere near good enough to get anywhere near the playoffs. We need big improvements if we are going for more than a relegation scrap. Harsh to say but the table doesn't lie!

I'm sorry and don't want to sound disrespectful to the thousands of loyal fans that have supported GTFC for many years and for some all their lives but before I moved to the area 12yrs ago from Peterborough having lived there for seven years and before that Boston for fourtyfive years and apart from the short time Boston was in the league I couldn't have told you what previous history Grimsby Town FC had and at what level they had ever played at until I moved up here. I've been a Town season ticket holder for a number of years now and watch all home games and travel to quite a few away days. This club is infectious, I'm now a fully converted Mariner.

I disagree. We still need some quality players if we want to compete for the play offs. We need at least 1 more centre back, cover at full back, at least one quality centre midfielder, perhaps of an attacking type, and an attacking wide player.

Agree with some of the thoughts above and agree that the squad is much better than last season. We carry a far greater attacking threat and with whitehouse coming back plus our younger players having an extra years experience and full pre season under there belts things are looking good.

However, i also agree that the squad is not finished yet. With only Young Pollock as our only backup at CB when we have released 2 and not signed any as replacements yet and only having Ring at LB, when he should be backup himself suggests we are at least 2 players short.

I also feel that 1 more midfielder/winger would be suitable as we lost Woolford, Welsh, Rose and Embleton in this area with only Ogbu and Hewitt signed.

On this basis think we are still 3 short

I agree with this. I'm nearly 20 and I can only half remember the near miss in 2006, that's as good as it's got in my Town watching career! The days of the second tier, Wembley doubles and winning at Anfield are becoming ancient history relatively.

I suppose Iam a bit bias as I have family from the area and a bit of a fooball statto as I love reading about the history of the game .

I know in some instances having spoken to some players our history and family connections have played a key part in them signing for Grimsby.

We were relegated from the second tier in 2003. To put that into perspective, McKeown was 13, Clifton was 5, Pollock was still in nappies and Green was 16.

The "growing up, Grimsby were a big team" line that often gets strung is getting less believable with each passing season now.

Hessenthaler might have a memory, given his dad played at that level.

We have been at League 2 or below since the summer of 2004 so most players will have grown up knowing Grimsby as a lower/non-league team.

Indeed the longest we have ever spent in terms of consecutive seasons in any division was
9 seasons in total 1892-1901 in the original Division Two. I am sure you will remember that long stint well Pete.  ;)

Since then the longest in any one division is 7 seasons again both in the second division.  

We are probably due some more movement in one direction or other in the next couple of years!

I agree with this. I'm nearly 20 and I can only half remember the near miss in 2006, that's as good as it's got in my Town watching career! The days of the second tier, Wembley doubles and winning at Anfield are becoming ancient history relatively.

I'm one of the few on here who can still remember our last Championship winning season. 1979/80, 40 years ago this season! What a game that was when we beat Sheffield United 4-0 and the players were carried off the field. A very distant fading memory now though.

I wonder how much longer it will be until we witness another Championship winning season.
