Obviously going to be an interesting pre season in all sorts of ways, but 1 aspect hasn't been discussed widely. IMHO Jolley's fire fighting 12 months ago left him little time to organise a proper pre season, and i think this contributed greatly to our poor start. He's always denied he got it wrong in terms of the pre seasons friendlies, both in terms of quality and quantity, so it'll be interesting to compare it.
last season there were only 6 friendlies in about 6 weeks, 2 of which were against Cleethorpes Town and 1 against Gainsborough.

in terms of transfers he signed 7 in June, 3 in July and 4 in late August

This will be very interesting, especially if we do not arrange many games again, does anyone know if other sides have already announced their pre-season schedule?

Last summer Jolley tried to implement 3-5-2 in effectively 5 games. The first team only played against Clee (7 Aug), Sunderland (17 Aug), Doncaster (24 Aug) and Gainsborough (28 Aug), there was also that weird 3 x 30 minute periods game at Rotherham. Also I have no idea if we actually played 3-5-2 in all of these.

The other two were against Clee (again - Lincs Cup) and Barton with the kids out.

It really showed against FGR on the opening day how unprepared we were and he ditched it straight away for some time. Hopefully this preseason will be better structured (and he won't continue with 3-5-2 experiment and waste time).

Not announced but I understand we have a friendly with Peterborough.

Number of games need tweaking for definite, we were far too leggy in the opening fixtures.  Pretty sure we played 3-5-2 in all the first team games.

Never understand why we never get 'big' sides (even their under 11's) for games at bp. The last sort of big side, with the exception of the Sheffield clubs, that I can sort of remember, was hearts.

It's a boost for the local economy, plus it gets ar5es on seats. Why can't  we get the likes of Leicester, Forest or Derby for games? Or is it down, as per usual, to policing?

You'd think we could organise games with the likes of Hull, Forest, Rotherham, Peterborough and the Sheffield clubs due to relative proximity. We certainly need more than last season.

Or even Hull, anyone guaranteed to sell the away end out would be ideal.

Probably though all these Championship clubs go on those pre-season tours abroad now playing in picturesque Austrian/Swiss villages instead of costa del Clee.

And ffs, why can't we organise a game against aalst? A sort of preseason trophy every year? Doubtful there'd be trouble.

Maybe a tad too forward thinking!

We played Hull on a Friday night a few years back ( 0-0 if I remember correctly )

Not 100% sure but weren't we trying to establish some kind of relationship with them when S&H were with us.... was that maybe how the Conor Townsend loan came about?

We played Derby a few years back at BP too in pre-season.

Well as we usually arrange games against our local non league teams we could play scunny, they'll be non league this time next year!

He recently said on Humberside ( when trying to answer a question about our indifferent form in his usual politician style )  that the beginning of the season was one of our poorer runs and he said that they would be reviewing what they did last pre season to see what lessons they could learn.
Not an out and out admission of getting it wrong but the best example of an acknowledgement it wasnt good.

I always think a pre-season tour is good as it allows the new group to get together and mix without other commitments. As good as a trip abroad would be the cost would impact on the playing budget.

An 8 team tournament played over about a week with a guarantee of 3 games would ensure all players got some minutes.

I travelled to Aalst a while back and took in a game and it really is a very poor level. With respect to them, they would get annihilated by any EFL side with the exception of Scunthorpe. That said, we managed to lose to Cleethorpes Town twice (I think) last pre season. I'd say Aalst are a similar standard.

Would love a game vs Grimsby in pre season, preferably at your place so me and me pals can have an excuse for a urine up.

Groundsman say's first game middle of July on new pitch, two week before first league game. So max two home games that could include home draw against Gainsborough in the Lincs Cup.

A few games west of the pennines please. Stockport, Stalybridge, Hyde or Altrincham. Preferably Alty as it's a direct tram for me
