Macca
Hendrie  Ohman. Davis. Ring
Clifton Embleton. Hessenthaler
Vernam. Thomas. A. Rose

Would love to see us drop to a 4231 with Cook in the no. 10 role behind striker, and swap him for Hess?

Something different. 523 is just not working

So you say about dropping Hess, who's been our best player, for a player that hasn't played in ages.

Cook has quickly fallen into the category of getting better without playing!

5-3-2 / 3-5-2 what ever you decide it is, you can't say its not working, when its been used away from home against 2 of the top 6!!!!

Pains me to say it, as being a Town fan patience always seems to be our cross to bear, we're going to have to give Jolley a little more time to experiment with the squad and formation while being confident we've got enough not to threaten the relegation places..

The time to experiment is once we have 50 points on the board. Why are we fannying around with formations now? We are letting attacking options leave such as Pringle and Hooper and not bringing anyone in to replace other than defenders. It might help me to understand if Jolley actually came out with some reasons rather than the usual guarded nothing he normally spouts.

From what I saw on Tuesday night I'd go this way Tommy..

                           Russell
                 Davis Ohman Whitmore
Hendrie                                             Grayson/RHJ
                   Clifton Hessenthaler
      Vernam                                 Embleton
                          Thomas

I'd give Ring a rest for now and play Vernam alongside Embleton rather than having his back to the goal and both of them providing cover in front of the wing backs without the ball..

I think this will be the side. It falls down with Seb Ring who has to do the work of two men when he isnt fit enough, not his fault as his season in Sweden finished in November and you're asking him to do the hardest job on the pitch as a wing back. If I was the Milton Keynes manager (not that I'd ever have anything at all to do with that illegitimate club), then I would target our left side. Personally, I would play Hendrie at left wing back and RHJ as right wing back.

I would ask Harry Clifton to sit and screen and instruct Hessenthaler and Embleton to get forward when possible. You could easily change to two holding midfielders by rotating the midfield triangle.

It is vital if we play 3-5-2 that Hendrie and Ring can get forward and supply width. We will need to be much much better than Forest Green or we will have no chance at all.

This one for me Whitmore  and RHJ should play, I'm afraid Ring is not ready and there are stronger fitter alternatives

I do like the potential of that system a lot. I did mention in a thread last week actually how we could work from a base of a back three and easily switch from a 3-5-2 to two attacking players either side of the forward as you've done here.

It stops opposition full-backs being given a free 15 yards to advance into before they reach any pressure from us by having wide forwards in place. However I'd want to make sure they didn't defend exactly like wingers in a 4-4-2, because then we'd end up with a very deep 5-4-1. If we played it well whilst in possession we could actually have a great advantage in wide areas because the higher starting position of the wing-backs would mean we should find it easier to have two players forward on the flank and hopefully create a 2v1 against their full back.

MJ did actually play that system in his first game with us at home to Port Vale.

I would play the team and tactics that did for them in the FA Cup it worked vs us for FGR on Tuesday.

I’d like to see Whitmore back in the team for starters

                  Russell
RHJ Whitmore Davis Hendrie
Clifton Hess Embleton
Vernham Thomas Cook

Maybe a bit harsh on Ohman and Ring but for now let's stick with a back four that we know works

This for me........... all I'd say is if MJ is persisting with a back 3 unless there is an injury or suspension we need to stick with the same 3 for a bit,

Have we not lost games this season playing a back 4 too though?

3 at the back, what hipster nonsense. We're Grimsby Town, we play the Grimsby way. And because we were good in the thirties, that means 2-3-5.

I was referring specifically to that back four

I recon fox will start with it being his last game before he leaves..

3-5-2 with wing backs would work fine if we had a big target man striker as too often there is a big hole between midfield and attack and we arent strong enough up top to hold until support arrives meaning too often the ball comes straight back at us.
This should be a target in the last week of the transfer window along with a pacey attacking midfielder who can play either wide or behind the front 2.

I would like to see.

Rachel Riley wearing just a Town top (just to keep it footy related) as she brings me my breakfast in bed.

Although I would settle for Suzi Dent 👍

Say what you want, but Jolley has obviously not just picked this 352 out of thin air. He is a very intelligent and I believe maticulous bloke and is trust his judgement in this.

In today’s interview he makes a good point about us consistently not scoring since been back in the FL and he undoubtably sees this as a way to attempt to get more end product for our buck.

To say it isn’t working after playing two games, both away at top end teams, also remembering our engine in Embleton and Clifton have been out due to injury and our back line still getting to know each other is a little premature I think.

Also to say it doesn’t work in this league shows a bit of a lack of understanding I feel. In fact I’ve seen some posts saying it doesn’t work just look at how Forest Green destroyed us.... failing to realise they play 352 and where on Tuesday.

You'd be lucky to get the corpse of Richard Whiteley though.  ;) ;)

                          macca

        hendrie  erman davies  Ring/fox

            hess (dm)   Grayson(dm)

     emblton       Clifton (am)       vernam

                        thomas

This would/should give us a solid back line with a good attacking 4 with Clifton doing the link up behind the striker, proven so far he is the most effective in that area.    embleton and vernam can swap round as they have before.
Just think would make us more solid playing a unit of 5 defensively and 4 out and out attacking unit. bit like barca.

Yes, (Russell for Macca) and forces us to get the ball down. If Embers is unfit give A Rose a start. We need a good tempo from the start and the courage to play a higher line.
Much prefer the pace of RHJ to either Ring or Fox. Sentiment should play no part until we are winning 3-0.

Whilst I agree with you to a certain degree, don't forget that Bignot got slated for that because most people on here thought he should then have pushed for promotion.
