A third European club competition with the working title 'Europa League 2' will be introduced from 2021.

One English team will enter the play-offs of the new tournament, while Scottish sides may miss out on Europa League places in a reshuffle.

As part of Uefa's 2021-2024 cycle, the Europa League will be halved in size to 32 teams with an extra play-off round between the group stage and last 16.

The new tournament will be played on Thursdays alongside the Europa League.

So basically the EL will be for the big countries and EL2 for the alsorans. Why not just get rid of the EL and if they have to have this extra competition then make it what is EL2? It deprives the chance for smaller nations to see the big teams in their own countries.

Can't have those pesky smaller clubs taking the money away from the Big Boys.

It is creating a 'Champions League 2' by any other name as Europa League 1 will suddenly be full of the biggest clubs who didn't make it into the CL proper.

What's the betting the EL will be back up to 64 teams in 5 years time and that the big 5 countries have 10+ teams in Europe every year? Most years at least one of the really big boys miss out, they'll be wanting to iron over those cracks and guarantee Europe.

Why they just get on with it and have an invitation only European League (Leicester City need not apply), and the national governing bodies can eject anyone who accepts the invitation from all their accredited competitions (no having it both ways - the prestige of competing in the top level of English football and the FA Cup say, whilst clawing in the all the dollars from being the 'partners' of Malaysian tyre companies or whatever).
