I don't know what to call them nowadays, but I have noticed that every team is looking for an attacking player for these positions, whereas I would rather start with someone who can defend first then hopefully be trained to attack when appropriate. To me Kenny Samson ( for you younger readers he played for Arsenal yonks ago) was a defender first, attacker as required, whilst Glen Johnson was an attacker but couldn't defend to save his life, always out of position hence one of the central defenders had to cover for him. I know which one I prefer.

The game has moved on and more is expected of the full back in attacking situations but first and foremost they should be a good defender.

So, are our fullbacks/ wing backs good at defending?

No but they're not very good at attacking either so it balances out.

I'd give my left bollock to have an attacking left back as good as Conor Townsend at GTFC.
