Today is the 12 year anniversary - see above for a fine Fishy article on the subject.

I appreciate that not everyone still finds this amusing but some of us loved it  8)  Whitts maintained it was an accident, both in a media interview and via Macca's book.  If true then Shearer really did over-react!

I think Mr Whittle knew exactly what he was doing that night.  ;)

Ha ha, probably correct Les  8)

Funny that the sunday broadsheetsdidn't slag off Whitts and referred to Shearer having that coming to him   ;D

I'm an accountant so I can make 2018 less 2005 total whatever I like  8).  Well spotted though..2005/06 season but of course game was in 2005 not 2006.

Congrats on being alert  ;D

I have the greatest respect for Alan Shearer  as a goalscorer, but that night he was as perhaps always, a bristling package of elbows and subtle fouls, something which I had never seen by Justin.

Justin Whittle was named Sunderland player of the month after that!

Alan Shearer was the absolute epitome of someone who loved to give it out but could never take it back!

I only ever saw the incident live at the game and, at the time, thought it was just an accidental collision. No reason to disbelieve that Whittle says about it and I certainly never thought he was in any way a dirty player.

Still, no complaints as Shearer 'accidentally' caught enough defenders to be due a couple of accidental whacks himself. My opinion of him went right down after the game as he went on whinging about it despite actually scoring the winning goal.

Remember seeing Shearer stamp on a Leicester City player on match of the day, Shearer was England captain at the time and I believe got away with it, so I always thought what goes around comes around.

Isn't that when Shearer allegedly threatened to retire from international football if the FA charged him?

Anyway, Happy Justin Whittle Day.

What is it about us and Newcastle around this time of year?

Don't forget that Shearer elbow connected with Whittle's head in the first half

Whittle did not make a song and dance about it,

Just got his revenge in the 2nd half,

Nothing wrong with that in my book.

The incident was in the first half. I remember being in the main stand and hearing Shearer ranting and raving about it as he went in for half time.

... all very well and good, but at the end of the day Shearer got the last laugh by scoring the only goal.

Justin was well known for completely missing the ball by about 3 yds every time he went up for a header ...

Totally innocent  ;D
