Obviously seen the light and dropped Walsh and Woolford, still think Whitemore and Hendrie lightweight.

Agree with this line up, although I'd probably go with Hessenthaler over Clifton. Looks like we're going to have a go at them.

I hate how we've been nothing short of dreadful for the majority of this season yet at some point today my mind switched from we're definitely going to lose to there's absolutely no chance we're not going to win today.
It's like England before the world cup!

Carlisle's home form is poor, so maybe he's thinking if I'm going it's a blaze of glory. Slade did it once last year (Swindon?) before returning to type.

Is that a 433 with Embleton in a midfield 3? Fair play to MJ, it's all or nothing stuff and it might just work.

I guess it might be more of a 4-5-1 at times? It does look a bit lightweight but he's tried most other options!

Appalling miss from Hooper. Played clean through, middle of the goal, he fluffs his first touch (when he could have just shot first time), and allows the keeper to come and and block. Not good enough.

And now Vernam gets on the end of an under-hit back pass, clean through again, and his strike is straight at the keeper. What is wrong with our forwards? Why are they so averse to scoring a bloody goal when presented with fantastic chances?

Good stuff. We are among the leagues best performers in the first half, and worst in the second. Got to start putting in 90 min performances now.
Only downside is all the missed chances.

Watching on iFollow. Only other game was MK. So obviously lacking in confidence in front of goal. Two 1 on 1s where we never looked like scoring. 4 shockingly poor crosses from Hendrie before he put one on a plate for JJ from 5 yards and again lacked any conviction.
We look so poor at the back. We dive in, we sit off, we hoof every clearance. Macca poor, rushing out when not needing to, dropped an easy collection, really poor kicking. He just offers no confidence, and doesn't take pressure off by claiming balls. We drop off as soon as they have the ball. Carlisle can pass it wherever they want to with 30 yards of our box. One defender (didn't catch who) could have been sent off for a trailing leg into Devitt.
We looked better later in the half but rarely offer the man with the ball options.
Worthy of mention
Vernam working hard and prepared to run at people
Thomas looks like someone used to playing with better players. Is clearly decent, but maybe not used to doing it all himself. So often controls looks up and sees no attacking help around him.
Rose worked hard, and tries to keep the ball till he can play it rather than hood it, but rarely has multiple options.
Noone else stands out.

For 20 minutes we pressed and frustrated Carlisle. They looked clueless and the crowd really got on Carlisle back. Then we started to sit off and give them space to play. Even then they only looked dangerous from corners, and most of those we gifted them. The only hope Carlisle have is the hope we keep giving them.

Great defensive performance and even a defender scored! 14 corners conceded, mostly in the second half, tells its own tale.
Great to see players going forward and making runs into the box. Hendrie's goal came from a Vernon shot that he followed up on. Something we never did at Stevenage.

So we can take from that game that when we're up against it, backs to the wall, we can defend resolutely and get the ball forward and create chances. LOTS of chances.
But backs to the wall or not, the forwards ratio of chances--turned-into-goals is wretched. That's the stat that will define our season, I fear. Question is, can we do anything about improving it.
Posted by: Cloudy, October 2, 2018, 9:50pm; Reply: 188
Hooper missed a couple of absolute sitters but he put in a hell of a shift in the 2nd half to help the team. Embleton and Clifton gave us legs in midfield and I know he has been the target for all manner of abuse but Collins was solid all night.
Rest up and go again against PV on Saturday

Macc and Morecambe both conceded in injury time, so that's 2 points we gained on them both, along with Northampton, Cambridge lost, so the bottom end has tightened up tonight and doesn't look as dire. Amazing what one round of games can do.

It's not since the Buckley era that I think we have ever so desperately wanted a manager to succeed and not to be sacked.
We all loved groves and woods, but I don't think we ever really believed they would be the answer and by the end we just wanted their regimes to end without too much rancour.
Jolley has built up an enormous well of goodwill. I just hope he can learn and build from this

Itās evident that Hooper lacks composure when in goal scoring positions and it appears he prefers the half chances from 20 yards a la Forest Green away, Wycombe home etc.
Realise I am a pretty lone voice but I still think he is a good footballer and I would rather he be wide left then Woolford. Would also agree there does seem a weakness in his performances at times but he may be a guy who does not have a great deal of confidence in himself probably not helped by not being a regular choice and not being particularly popular with fans at Vale or town. Would love him to bag a brace on Saturday and accept that the majority of fellow fishies will disagree with my opinion on this.
Thatās football fans all the see the game and judge players differently. UTM

We would not have got away with that against a decent team. We just gave them the ball, and invited them onto us for 10 minutes, and didn't even defend well. Carlisle were just woeful with the ball in the second half.
That said, I don't think it matters. It's a sign of a lack of confidence, nothing more, and the win is a step towards getting some confidence back.

I agree its huge. Wasn't meant as a judgement, just a statement of fact having watched the game as many others didn't. Those listening to the radio seem to have been given the impression Carlisle put us under pressure and we defended well, but we brought the pressure on ourselves and had to rely on Carlisle being woeful in the final third.
We just needed to win anyhow anyway and we have. Now we build confidence and move forward.

Agree with drbell, we gave away possession far too cheaply. We had ten back for every corner so you knew if it was cleared it was going to come straight back. Don't get me wrong, superb defending with the back four throwing themselves into great blocked tackles, but we could have taken so much pressure off ourselves had we left one or two players up. It's a learning curve though, and this result will hopefully give the players and management the confidence to do things a bit differently. The result was everything though, and all that really mattered.

Disagree with that bit in bold.
The opposition having the ball doesn't mean we're not defending well.
How many saves did Macca have to make? None that you wouldn't have expected him to make with ease, that's for sure. And nothing from inside the box.
We didn't let them play through us and didn't let them get in behind us in that second half apart from a couple of unfortunate slips from Hendrie.
The only thing I'd say that was a major concern was the number of corners we gave them. Just them having so many opportunities to put the ball into the box full of players could've been costly. But generally defending was fine from what I saw.

Much better performance and lots of effort, could have been 2 or 3 up with some good chances missed in the first half however Carlisle missed some as well especially the free header just before half time.
The energy from both Clifton and Embleton made a difference for me as well as Vernam's running in the first half but he does tend to drift out of the game in the second half.
Not bigging it up too much as in all honesty Carlisle were pretty dreadful at times and neither side created much in the second half.
Jury is still out for me on MJ, Saturday is still a big game for him.

Interesting how we all see the same game differently. For me we let them get into promising and dangerous positions again and again (10 times? 20?), even allowing them to walk into our box and pass it around on a couple of times. A better side would have made these into chances, which may have been taken. Carlisle crossed behind the goal, mispassed, fell over, and just failed to create anything clear cut. Their only hope was corners which unlike us they kept away from the keeper.
For me, it was poor defending as a team to invite them into the final third every time, and thankfully Carlisle were just too poor to create chances.

Sometimes though you just have to persevere, especially with strikers, being in and out of the team does not help. Yes he missed a couple which is disappointing, but if he is not on the pitch he will definately not score. Cut him some slack and let him know he will get the next few games. It is odd though how he can suddenly put one in from 20 yards and then miss one from 5 yards.

But that is the entire point. The clubs at this level don't always punish you, because they are not that good. We could have been out of site in that game had we ourselves punished them with our chances. They are a team higher placed in the league than us, playing at home. Of course they were going to put us under pressure at some point. After all, we are at the bottom end for a reason, and had just lost 6 in a row. The teams that do well in this league are the ones who make the least mistakes, and anyone can beat anyone with a bit of luck and a fair wind.
I think it's very easy, and understandable, to focus on what we did wrong and not on what we did right. Biggest of which was to come home with all the points. You don't have to be great to prosper in this league. you just have to be less bad than most of the others.
Posted by: TownSNAFU5, October 3, 2018, 12:43pm; Reply: 224
Apart from "Jolley's rescue-mission" at the end of last season, we were dire the rest of last season and this season.
It is still less than 24 hours since we were actually 92nd out of 92 teams. That does not happen by accident. There were systematic failings at this club before Jolley came. "A fish rots from the head first."
One swallow does not make a summer but we can hope that last night's crucial win gives a platform to build on.

You make a good point. As I originally stated, this is only the second game I have seen. Even accounting for their injuries, I was shocked to see how many points Carlisle have based on that shocking performance against us. They looked totally clueless. That said, I still feel if we regularly defend as we did for the last 15 mins of the game, we will get found out fairly often. However, as I said, I don't think we will if we continue to pick up a few points. I feel it was purely a reflection of our lack of confidence and the value of those 3 points given our predicament. A confident team simply wouldn't play like that. Lets hope thats us from now on ;-) (or at least soon).

State of this. 464 and you're top of the league ffs. We take 1800 to Tranmere, well we did until they fell off the face of the league. We'll take 1800 again this season.
Stockport? LOL. We're Oldham.
Do you ANYTHING about distance travelled? Itās over twice as far from Oldham to Tranmere than it is from Lincoln.
Using your logic, your 400 at Mansfield is absolutely awful compared to our yearly 1600.

Using my logic our 1800 at Tranmere trumps your 1600 at Mansfield in terms of distance then.
Plus the fact you're top of the league.
Plus the fact you get bigger home crowds.
Tinpot away following.
464 when top of the league FFS. ;D

Am I really reading this correctly?
A topic about Grimsby Town's away following to Carlisle United, to which an Oldham Athletic fan criticises, then a Lincoln City fan joins in & whilst this Darlington fan types out a reply.
Phew and we're done. Proper off-topic.
Personally, I think the 143 that travelled are fooking troopers. Fair play to every single 1 of those especially with the run you've been on.

Oh dear. All those numbers has scrambled his brain. I'm embarrassed for him.(blushing)

I don't know what I've walked in on here and not about to trawl back and find out. All I'll say is 1600 at Mansfield is the full allocation sold out, so if there was a higher upper limit there clearly would have been even greater numbers.
See 4400 at Doncaster, 3000 odd Notts County etc etc

To be fair though youāve got a massive bandwagon to take you all š
To be fair, I'd say we are a forward thinking club, who has maximised our recent and current success. But each to their own.

What a helmet. It was a 300 mile round trip on a Tuesday.
Had it been 50 miles we would , hence we took 4k to Coventry on a Tuesday last year.

I think you will find we have the best away following in the league, Id hazard a guess Grimsby's is better than yours too.

Whilst Iām sure Town fans have on occasion posted on other teams forums, I very much doubt we have got into an argument with a club not related to that particular forum.
The fact that Gimps and Oldham have a slanging match on the Fishy tells you how poor their own sites are. Also the fact they still canāt keep away from here tells you which club has the biggest reputation.
Form is temporary, class is permanent. UTM

Our forums are poor.
You get banned for not conforming. Good banter on here.
Plus the Oldham fella is a mug, and the record needed setting straight.

I can't believe this game is still going on. How much injury time?

Dunno. My nails are bitten to the knuckles. This is worse than the play off final in 98.

Theyāve got a another corner. Still a bit of injury time to go. Hold on lads.

Nah. Was one of the plus 400 at Mansfield despite us having smaller crowds than you.
We are actually too big for this division.
You're not very bright are you? The fact you have smaller crowds than us would suggest that you're not too big for this division. Plus we're 22nd ffs.
