Not to dampen spirits, but did we need another midfielder?...I'm not saying we didn't but would rather have strengthened our back line,.
Good luck to Elliot, hope he settles in well and does the vlack n white shirt proud..

That was my first thought, albeit I expected a winger in rather than a defender.  I think we've got the numbers at the back, if not maybe the players we think we should have.  It would have surprised me to see another defender coming in without at least one going out.

Having gone all in on the wingback system throughout the summer and with his summer recruitment, the return to a 4-5-1 has left us without any real width.  Woolford is doing a grand job on the right but we lack something on the left.

Keen to see how this lad fits in, definitely comes with a decent pedigree.

I suppose I can agree with that DHM, still think we lack any real pace out wide if 3-5-2 is to be adopted, just have to see out this acquisition pans out...good luck to the lad though as I've already said..

Is this lad a replacement in the mould of Whitehouse?
Posted by: hheh2, August 30, 2018, 6:00pm; Reply: 11
Has been said that he plays as an attacking midfielder so would be a replacement for Whitehouse

Maybe he will play in Clifton's position?

From what the Sunderland fans are saying we have a young but very creative attacking  player. My question would be are we going to play him? We need some goals in the team and it sounds as if he could score a few and assist with a few more.

Eh?

How many fit/available/first team ready players in our squad mate?

Strength in depth in midfield?

My colleague who’s a Sunderland fans and season ticket holder says, “he’s an excellent player tipped for the top. We’ve been clinging onto him as Arsenal and Liverpool have been watching. Sunderland fans have been wanting him in the team since he was 16”.

I guess let’s see what happens then. Welcome young man and enjoy yourself.

Good signing, hope that's us done with loan players though. We need to build a squad of our own. My mate's a Sunderland fan and rates him highly.

Sorry I have lost a yard. What's his squad number?

Had a good chat with a Sunderland season ticket holding colleague earlier. He seemed to know a lot about him in spite of his relative lack of senior action - apparently he's been talked about as the brightest prospect within the acadamy (which has Elite status) for the last couple of years and seemed a little surprised he hadn't been more involved in things early this season (just the solitary start against Wednesday in the cup). Reckoned had Sunderland not been in League One himself this season he'd have been loaned out to a club at that level.

He's been a key player for England at various youth levels and as was pointed out, scored a goal for the under 19's which was nominated for European goal of the season alongside that overhead kick from Ronaldo, which ain't a bad accolade.

In terms of style, apparently very attacking and creative - a bit of a 'number 10' type who would do well playing just behind a front two or target man. In that sense, it sounds like he's been brought in to fill a Whitehouse-shaped hole.

What he did say though is that he's very much about technicality, not physicality. He's very small and reasonably slight, and in his opinion reckoned he'll make a career at Championship level at least but only if he can make the step up to men's football from a physical perspective. He also suggested that he'll need protection to see the most of him in League Two, so may go nicely alongside Welsh in that case.

Will be interesting to see where he fits in. By all accounts Sunderland appear to have allowed him to come on the proviso that he gets a fair amount of game time, but who misses out if that's the case. Clifton's probably the obvious one, given that Embleton is of a similar age but is of a seemingly higher pedigree, but then surely there's the play-off between short-term gain and the long-term objective of developing your own player and ultimately asset.

Perhaps a rotation between Embleton, Clifton and Woolford (or even Cook) might be an option. Time will tell, but looks promising in any case.

Exciting thing about that footage is that he scores exceptional technical goals with both right and left foot. If he's genuinely two footed and seemingly equally strong on both, then that's a rarity in the game.

Seems a real prospect, let's hope he slots in and enjoys his time here. UTM

"The 19-year old - who can play right across the midfield but is perhaps best utilised wide on the left or as a number 10 - is one of the most highly-rated young players currently at the club but is at the stage in his career where he needs to be playing first team football on a regular basis."

Could be just what you think we need!

Cheers Mal, that sounds very promising then.  My worry is the one that Poojah hints at, his inclusion comes at the expense of the development of Clifton.   But if he's utilised on the left then I think that's a win-win really.

Clifton will only learn from him and get better. If this lad is as good as those videos above suggest, adding what he's got to Clifton's game is a definite bonus all round, even if Clifton doesn't play much while he's here. Great addition for me.

Hopefully he plays more than the last England youth international that was here.

I think it is great for Clifton as he can see how he compares to one of the best in his age group, with anything he learns benefitting us in the long term.

If he does well whilst here and we aid him in his development that could make us a more attractive proposition when it comes to potentially making these kind of signings later on down the line.

This is not a go at Slade but as Jolley has mainly upto now been involved with youth players, reserve teams, then clubs may feel he will be much more inclined to play their players.

Scored today in England U20's 2-0 win against Switzerland

The advantage was doubled on the hour mark when Elliot Embleton, currently on loan at Grimsby Town from Sunderland, added his name to the scoresheet to complete the scoring.
