Pearson... don’t remember a few of the earlier ones to be honest.

Bloody hell Rob I'm struggling here.......

Kempson if I have to express a preference!

My memory of Richard Smith is that he was very good but slow, but it is very vague so might well be wrong on that one lol. Pearson for me.

Smith best player on the list by far, shame about his injuries...

Good grief, no wonder we've been where we've been.

Erm, out of that lot, Smith

I don't really remember some of those, so it's Pearson for me.

Pearson for me.

Smith was a proper player, a genuine Rolls Royce of a defender but his injury problems had taken hold well before the Fishy era.

Plus it's Shaun Pearson!!

Probably have to go for Pearson on this one. I know Bennett wore number 4 but didn't he breifly wear 5 before he left? Might be remembering wrong though

Pearson

Shame I only saw glimpses of big Smudge before his injuries. I remember a whole season of chopping and changing between Lever, Groves and Livvo at the back while Smith and Handyside were out

Was Lever before the Fishy Era, then? Used to play No. 5 during most of his time at the club as I recall and was a very underrated player.

From that list, I'd go for Pearson because the others either didn't play enough or weren't good enough.

Richard Smith was absolute class when fit so I’ll go for him.

I’m sure Ryan Bennett wore number 5 at some point though.

Lever should be on this list IMO .... Rob?

Why can't we pick another number 4 and put him in the number 5 shirt?

Smith was the best player out of those. Shaun has a big place in our hearts though. Toughest call yet.

Smith edges it.

I was wondering that too, but, the squad number Lever had was 15 (he left after the first year of squad numbers - not sure if there was a link ;))

Anyway, I'll also vote for Pearson.

The rest of that list is quite depressing!

For me its out of these (highlighted in bold) but i'm going to give it to Richard Smith only because he played at a higher level to Shaun.

Like stated Richard Smith was better, Premier League experience with Leicester and was solid when he was fit. That being said I’d have to give my vote to Shaun Pearson simply for his service over 6 seasons and helping us back in to the League.

Across a range of aspects other than pure technical ability, it'll be Pearson for me. Massive contribution over a sustained period.

I'm not sure I think doing it by squad number is the best way to establish the best team of the Fishy era.

Richard Smith. Really was a classy player.

Hard not to say Shaun Pearson for this one but I'll stick with Smith.

This is for squad number 5. He was 15!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999%E2%80%932000_Grimsby_Town_F.C._season#Squad

Incidentally, I say this is the Fishy era, but it's actually also the Squad Number era. The Fishy starts in 1999-2000 which is the same year squad numbers started at GTFC I believe.

What's the highest squad number we've ever had over the years. I think Iffy Onuora and Simeon Jackson both wore number 39. Have we ever had a squad number in the 40's?

No wonder I don't remember them. Peet was a young keeper wasn't he but I must say that I've never heard of Emil Powles.

What number did Louis Soares wear, his was quite a high number I think.

Rob seems to have set this up as a bit of fun and interest for people as things are a bit quiet in the close season. There are plenty of people who are saying what about him, what about him. I don’t know GrimRob but I imagine he has other things in his life to do so if you are not happy with his choices then either do it yourselves or maybe take it in the way it was intended, a bit of fun to pass the time and for us to remember (mainly) some of the good old days.

Jeez.
