Grimsby Town Football Club are delighted to announce that James McKeown has put pen to paper on a new three-year-deal, keeping him at Blundell Park until 2021.

The 2017/18 Player of the Year scooped 7 awards at this years event, after a countless number of eye-catching performances and incredible saves during a difficult season for the club. This included 3 clean sheets in the final 5 games of the season, which helped secure the club's place in Sky Bet League Two for the 2018/19 season.

Fans' favourite, McKeown has made over 360 appearances with The Mariners since joining in 2011 and his new contract will take him to the summer of 2021, coinciding with his 10th season with the club.

iFollow subscribers can catch James' full interview exclusively over on iFollow Mariners later today.

James has signed up for the 18/19 season, have you? Secure your season ticket online via our Online Ticket Store.

3 years is not something that the board would have advocated at any point in the last 10 years. Is this evidence of Jolley making sure he is backed properly?

Great move, really pleased to keep one of the better keepers in the division and to keep some continuity from the 15/16 squad.

Great news.

I doubt there was a better keeper in League 2 last season.

This'll take him into a testimonial too, which will be very well deserved.

Great news. Possibly had to give him 3 years and a testimonial to get the deal over the line, but 3 years for him is no risk, as he has proven his quality and loyalty over the previous 7 years. Credit where it is due, well done to the board.

Well done to all who made it happen.

The the big deal with a testimonial?

The financial implications for him and his family?

Am I right in thinking players get all the proceeds from ticket sales etc? Has the potential to be a great earner for Macca so not surprised that may have been a deciding factor.
Posted by: jock dock tower, May 21, 2018, 6:35pm; Reply: 40
Most players have testimonial years with a testimonial committee to arrange fund raisiers for the players concerned like golf matches, sportsmans' dinners, you name it and it'll probably be aprt of the equation. Ticket sales from the game go to the player with so much of it being tax free, so the year can be a big thing for any player embarking on it.

“Grimsby chairman John Fenty said on 16 May that the signing of Makofo had been a "The best since he had been at the club", and that he had recently been on trial with Lincoln City after being told he was to good for Grimsby town.[23]”

He's about 450 games behind the other Macca. He'd have to play until his very late 30s to catch him up. He didn't start playing for us until he was about 22, whereas Macca started when he was about 17 I think.

Not impossible, but unlikely.

Unlikely, I agree. But GKs can go on longer than outfield players, and they go on longer these days than they used to. So 40 is achievable.

Wouldn't surprise me. Thing is his contract is up and although I love his work rate and ethic if MJ feels he's only worth x amount a month and thinks he could get better with a little bit more money then I'll support that. Noone knows what's going on behind scenes or how much anyone's on. For all we know he could be on 1k a week and we've offered £900 (random figures plucked out the air)

Well it was suggested a while back on Twitter that he was one of if not the top earner at the club and given that he’s 30 and in my opinion at least not indispensable, it’s hardly surprising that he’s been offered less.

find it difficult to believe Summers is a top earner - getting the relegated York duo was a case of shopping in the bargain basement for Hurst at the time i would guess due to Fentys excessively tights grip on the purse strings that was only loosened after we had lost Hurst.

That tweet may or may not be right but no way is Summerfield the highest paid player, especially after McKeown’s contract extension.
Posted by: ginnywings, June 3, 2018, 9:43am; Reply: 86
Does it matter who is on what? The manager has a budget that he uses how he sees fit, and wages plus length of contract will be based on what the manager thinks is appropriate for each player. The player either agrees, or goes elsewhere. To be honest, there is no-one in the squad that i would be desperately unhappy to see move on. We weren't exactly setting the football world alight with the squad we had.

How do you or anyone else on here know what the players are being/have been paid? More importantly in the first week of June and 2 months before the new season begins does it mater?

Like pretty much all lower league clubs we recruit within our means and the budget is a percentage of ex VAT income each year. If Summerfield and Collins go it will be a shame as they are both really good pros, but not irreplaceable.

My post is a rebuttal of the tweet on the previous page. I have no idea what any player earns. My guess is that Danny Collins was on more than Luke Summerfield.
