Who ever comes in, has a job on their hands, in my opinion its a total squad rebuild, which takes time.
How many of the current squad, would you keep?

May not be able to move some players, due to contracts.

IMHO the new manager needs to rid the club of all the dead wood (players), if possible and build a squad with a blend of experienced ,young eager and the best youth players on our books, please no more journeyman looking for their last payday.

The new manager needs to have a much smaller squad (quality rather than quantity) and build that unity that Hurst squad had.

No easy task ahead, as it will take time and that something managers are not given these days.

As always I will support the new manager and hopefully this time Fenty gets the right person in.

Pointless thread, trying to decide at the moment, decide at the end of the season.  The under-performers might find a new lease of life and we might want to keep them.

According to Cod Almighty's Play Contracts Section, the only players remaining under contract in the summer are:

Dixon
Rose
Kelly
Cardwell
Hooper

With the possible exception of Cardwell, I wouldn't want to keep any of these.

I'd offer Mills, McKeown and Dembele new contracts and replace the rest.

Same 3 as Bobby maybe Summerfield,  Cardwell as last backup in case he has real potential and of course Clifton etc. The rest getting too old and slow or are not good enough.

Feel like Summerfield has done enough to be rewarded at least a contract offer. But that is basically the only addition to Mills, McKeown and Dembele i'd make.

Not with me, hes never really had a run so we wont know till it happens but you never know he could be a real talent, Clifton is our saviour in midfield according to many, even though hes hardly been on the pitch, wont really know till they get a few games either. :-/

If I had my way I would start next season with just McKeown, Mills, Summerfield and Dembele from this. Give then new man a free reign on the market effectively and sign players based on an identity and philosophy.

Hell of a heads up thread for the players expected to give everything for three points Saturday!

I don't know - how can we judge players who were been held back by the negative management and tactics of Slade.

He's just turned 21 and has played less than 20 games. He was clearly brought in for his potential, which may or may not come to fruition. We are hardly in a position to give him game time at the moment.

Dembele is under contract already isnt he ? That has been raised already and the answer from JF or Slade was that the second year has/was triggered by us and he cant go anywhere unless we decide to.

its a baffler.....he scored goals in pre season, looks to have good movement and awareness....not a bad finisher....but Slade started with the lone wolf Vernon approach and hoofball which definitely didnt suit Cardwell and from then on in its been cameos.
With some "footballers" around him he may actually be something that we need. Maybe Wilko will see something in him and give him a decent crack at it. 3-4 games as opposed to 15-20 mins every other 9th match.

Can we be positive about the players we have to hopefully get us out of this mess before we start saying who’s worth keeping or not. The players will read this board and negativity towards then won’t help. Support for he team! UTM

We can't get rid of anybody until the season ends so this really is a pointless thread.
The players have 13 games to show our new (currently) manager and (Potential) next new manager what they are capable of.
At this point last season did anyone want Summerfield here? Slades "play it quickly play it forward" suited his game as it avoided the dodgy backpasses of Hursts tenure.
Will be intereting to see how many out of work managers will turn up at Cambridge who also have a caretaker manager.

Would tend to agree but on the proviso that all but Dembele are squad players. Maybe a little harsh but if we want to push on I think we need better players in all positions.

Cardwell & Clifton would also get a reprieve if any good but as I have never seen them, other than Cardwell v Coventry, impossible to judge their ability. Just wondering if, given the fact that Wilko came through at a time when youth was given a chance, if we might actually see Clifton and Cardwell getting game time ?

Probably have to be an element of clean slate for a number of the current squad. They’ve been asked to play a certain way, which I’m convinced has not enabled them to show what they can actually do.

If you had to make a decision on what’s been seen so far though;

McKewon
Killip
Mills
Davies (possibly due to age but gives some versatility/cover and a lot of experience)
Hall-Johnson - worth another look and he must be on releativley low wage
Dembele - no brainier
Clements
Clifton
Summerfield - improved massively since last year.
Cardwell - not had enough opportunity to improve yet.

If we could sign him/ have a year loan ..... Vernam!

May have missed someone.

It about sums up Slade that we are struggling to name a five a side team of payers we think are up to it.

Let's see how they get on playing under different tactics and a different philosophy first shall we. Some might suit playing a different brand of football or respond to different Management.

The above plus Summers. Absolutely beast Rose and Hooper pre season as if they where ultra fit they may have more of an impact/

Every player should be told that they start as of this
week with a clean sheet.

None of us know really what went on in the dressing
room or at the training ground under Slade but having
heard the latter ' rabbit on ', standing in front of his
game plan chart before the players went out before
a match I doubt Wilko had much say.

He now gets his chance to express himself and tell
the players to do the same. He hasn't got much time
and nor have the players.

We all have our opinions about individual players, what
they have and have not done under Slade but I hope
some of them prove, under a different system, that
they're capable of much better things

Be quite revealing if we came out and played freely and expansively on Saturday and actually looked threatening and scored goals.

I’d only keep Dembele and Mills, and I’m not that sure about Mills. I’d think about Davies who I rate highly but he’s 37 next birthday, I’d try and bring in someone younger first.

I agree in the main. Think Mills is a decent player but Hall Johnson showed plenty when he came on. I'd keep Davies around. He looked excellent at left back until his injury and he has a lot of experience. He looks fit as a fiddle to me, even at his age. Can also play a few positions. Worth another year i reckon. Wasn't too fussed about Macca either, but we've looked a lot worse without him. Worth having around, even if we bring in another keeper.

I'm fairly sure correct me if i'm wrong but when Wilko was asked about Cardwell a while back he said he would be ready for the second half of the season?

I disagree, I know Rose has popped up with a few goals but his overall contribution to the side has been poor in my opinion.

I'm not overly impressed by Osborne either or in fact the other 2 central defenders. Slade was an anus to think any of these three were better than Pearson.

The rest can go imo

Very difficult to answer this one. Many players will fail or blossom depending on how much the tactics suits their playing style. Just look at Summerfield for proof. He was under a lot of criticism last season, but this season I think he has been the most consistent and possibly the best player in the team. And yes, I have watched every game this season.
Many people speak highly of Dembele, rightly so as he obviously is very talented, but he still lacks a lot of end product. Lots of trickery, but not much else yet.

So, based on Slade`s tactical system, this is the result of the Norwegian jury:

To Keep

Summerfield
McKeown
Mills
Dembele
Hall-Johnson
Clarke

Undecided

Davies (Age?)
Collins (Age?)
Dixon
Berrett
Rose
Osborne
Cardwell
Killip

Have to go

McAllister (Too much injury time)
Kelly
Hooper
Vernon
Woolford
Clements

I'm not giving Slade credit for that, It was the manager at Macclesfield that transformed Summerfield into a much improved player in all aspects of his game.

This made me chuckle, 18 games on loans transformed a 30 year old player?  Nothing to do with the quality of the players around him being far inferior making him look better or that has been previously mentioned the style difference between Slades and Hurts.
