Is being the Manager of GTFC a good job?

Well there are only 92 jobs available and nearly half of those are often given to overseas coaches so there are around 50 jobs available as and when they arise to prospective Manager`s.We then have a merry go round of ex Manager`s who at some point may have done well and these tend to get hired first and foremost.A lot of Clubs seem to appoint internally and a few give a go to up and coming or new start Manager`s so where do Town fit in?

2017-18 Slade 2 Experienced Manager and previous Grimsby Manager hired to steady the ship took over a midtable side with a huge squad and arguably made it worse sacked after 12 Months

2016-17 Marcus Bignot An exciting prospect who had done well on a shoestring at Solihull brought in to take over a Play Off chasing side with a remit to stay up.Sold the star striker for good money and set about building a squad for the following Season.Took his eye off the league table and some alarming performances started to spring up amidst tales of player unrest.Let go after 6 Months

2011-16 Paul Hurst originally turned up with his mate Shouty then went it alone .Consistantly got the Club into Play Offs and was unlucky not to gain Promotion a year earlier when he was robbed by a customary Refereeing gaffe in the Play Off Final.Had a fractious relationship with sections of the home support but should be duly noted he was backed with record season ticket sales and away followings exceeding 4k in his last Season.Decided to quit and move up a league with Shrewsbury.

2009-2011 Neil Woods Promoted from within after being successful with the Juniors and in bizarre circumstances due to a terrible run of results as caretaker which continued into his spell as permanent Boss and saw the team go 26 games without a win and ultimately fall out the football league after 130 years.Given the chance to fire the Club back but just could not get it right.

2008-2009 Mike Newell Grimsby fans demanded a big name and got it after a series of internal appointments that had gone nowhere. This decision proved a nightmare and things got even worse with a never ending catalogue of journeymen signed who did nothing but steal a wage.

2006-2008 Buckley 3 Got off to a good start in his first season with exciting loanee Martin Patterson netting goals.Worked another minor miracle in getting a very young team to Wembley the following season but the league form was patchy at best and Buckley gambled all his eggs in one basket financially with the signing of Martin Butler who repaid him with an act of treachery.A poor run either side of Wembley saw Buckley sacked.

In fairness, we seem to have tried all avenues when you pigeon hole it like that. Hurst and Bignot being the up and coming option, Woods being the internal, Buckley tried n tested, Slade being the repeat offender and Newell being the so called big name.
I'm not sure what sort of a club we are nowadays and looking long term I would go up and coming but I'm not sure which way we should go in the immediate.

My point is it must be a fairly attractive job if you do your homework on the Club.Fenty for whatever faults he has usually gives a Manager far more time than the fans want that Manager to have with the possible exception of Bignot. The fanbase when onside is capable of averaging 5k which is top 6 in League 2 and midway League 1.The much maligned GY/NE Lincs area is far better than the doom mongers would have you believe in terms of location Nationally but does suffer Geographically being out on a limb. The right man with a 2-3 year plan could do very well here and use it as a stepping stone to better things. We saw this with Hurst and Lincoln the Cowley`s in my opinion League 2 is awful standard wise and any half decent side can challenge for the Play Offs. This is a golden opportunity for someone.

As at all clubs it is all about results. If the groundsman was put in charge and team was winning everyone would be happy.

A chairman who can’t afford to put much money in and wants out, and fans who don’t settle for anything that isn’t Buckley’s liquid football if the 90s.

Perhaps not.

BUT, get it right someway, somehow and get everyone behind you then it could be a great job. There’s a lot of hard word to be done to get to that stage.

It depends on so many things Micky.

Timing is one. Is it a panic appointment? What is the league position? How many games to go? Is there a long term plan?

There are no transfer opportunities until the summer so who is on the playing staff is important. The summer budget and clear out plans will figure but not yet.

Then there is the small matter of which candidate is available and who can be bought. Seemed to me that Slade was just about the only sensible option last year but today there may be 3 or 4 reasonable possibles apart from Wilkie and some of the up and comers from non-league.

Of course there is question of the money man too, could a prospective manager work with someone whose track record for bad decisions is there to see in your post?

Lastly the really key question - “Do you feel lucky, punk?” ;)

TRRFC in a lot of ways the not being able to bring in new players will help especially some one like Wilko who should know the players available inside out.Not for you and I but surely the sensible thing for Town to do here is see what reaction they get Saturday if it`s positive they can dangle Wilko a carrot and that in turn moves to the players. If it`s the same old rubbish new broom required ASAP with the points already gained Town should be capable of staying up but were all getting nervous.

Great question I don`t feel lucky but I feel 100 times more optimistic than I did at 5pm Saturday

How is becoming a manager of a club about to be relegated out of the football league an attractive job to anyone but the desperate?

I wonder how much relevance JF would have if Town were flying high.I mean if he sanctioned the cash for whatever player`s the manager wanted or the budget was enough to soak up said transfers JF could fade away and not sure when you say bad decisions which of them have affected a Manager?

Not sure how you come to that conclusion when however sh1t Town have been half a dozen others are still worse off? Yes it could happen but % wise Town are still in control of their own destiny JUST

Of course it's a good job. It might not suit everyone in terms of location, but we're in the top 100 professional football League clubs. There are literally thousands of clubs with managers and coaches beneath us. If you do well here you are going to get noticed. Buckley, Slade and Hurst have all been poached by clubs higher up the league because of the success they had here.

It's literally the worst job available in the football league. We are the most at risk club of a devastating relegation with a candidacy. We are in one of the most deprived areas of the country. The fans and the board at are each others throats. There is no obvious signs of any investment. Our team is disjointed and mediocre at best. The transfer window has closed. There'd be no money to get anyone even if it wasn't. The contract on offer is only 6 months rolling, meaning the person coming in has no guarantees for them or their family. We've also been through 2 managers in less than a year.  Our stadium is crumbling. Our fanbase have hounded out successful managers and players. None of this makes us an attractive proposition.

Never underestimate a manager's ego. There will be plenty who will firmly believe they can keep us up.

I was pretty much agreeing with a lot of what you were saying until the highlighted bit..

Name the successful managers and players that have been hounded out and in what way..

You see I see that as a huge positive. We are not particularly into the Theatre, the Opera or the Ballet but what the local community have is spirit, spirit if harnessed correctly that gives this football club a huge lift.

The warts n all run down remote nature of the area gives a huge boost to the passion that the fans can create.

My message to the board (not that they listen) is

USE IT, DO NOT ABUSE IT!

Perfect opportunity for someone to make a name for themselves then. Win-win,

We are in a relegation battle of sorts but not in relegation places meaning there is less to do to keep us up and our fate is in our hands not someone else's but we are close enough to relegation that the new manager will have saved us from relegation as that is where we were heading.

All he has to do next season is keep us in the top half then you push on the season after for play off places.

This team has scored goals before and I believe can again if played correctly

All this means we will be a fairly good prospect for a manager wanting to make a name for himself

But apart from all that, it's a great job.

It isn't as good as in days gone by, but we will still be overwhelmed with applicants with us being in the elite list of clubs in Football league.

The trick of course is to pick the right one, who will give us a huge lift for a season or two, like some in the past have done.

This is the key to our future - get a decent manager were it all gels for a couple of years to get some forward momentum, and give us something to get behind. I just cannot see the club as a whole making things happen other than hopefully choosing the right man to get us moving.

I don't agree with any of this "building for the future" malarky either - like every other part of our lives football is transient now, and no manager will ever get the time needed to implement anything worthwhile. A few defeats on the bounce and he is a gonna no matter what he promised at the interview.

It is the boards responsibility to plan for the long term, in the stadium, the infrastructure and so on.

The trick is to get some momentum and then push on from there and then the simple matter of keep choosing the right managers to keep it going!

Don't know about that. Whenever anything like that comes to town it's sold out. The Grimsby area has quite a big tradition in 'the Arts', both watching and performing.
