I was watching the bench quite closely today and it struck me that neither Slade nor Wilko made hardly any attempt to shout advice/instructions to the players. Instead they just constantly berating the assistant referee over every decision. Two tactical things that I was surprised they didn’t try to sort out today during the game were that the new young lad was dropping deep all the time and Vernon was the furthest forward of the two. The new lad looked quite useful and is a lot quicker than Vernon so I couldn’t understand why they weren’t in the opposite positions, surely if Vernon could get a flick on then the new lad would have had more pace to run on to it. The other thing (apart from playing Woolford in the first place) was that as soon as DJ came on then he started trying to get to the bye line to get crosses in, and we looked a bit more dangerous. On the other side dembele comes inside all the time and runs into traffic, I feel he should have been instructed by the bench to stop coming inside and try and to the bye line and get a cross in. So many of our balls into the box are coming in from a third of the way up the pitch and are pretty easy to defend against, we need proper width.

Thats because neither of them have a clue what to say or do. The only width around the park is round slades belly

Excellent points. Vernam has enough close control and composure to play a number of roles. Dembele failed to deliver today and had little support possibly because no one has a clue what he will do next.
Failure to change things at 2 - 0 by taking off Woolford and Berrett left us with too much to do even before the sending off.
Norwich must be concerned how DJ is not getting more game time in a team unable to score  goals.

Sladeball and Wilkinson are like an Aardman production, 4,000 hours of mico movements to get 1 minute of action.

It's strange because both Vernam and Vernon (not a pairing that trips off the tongue) both naturally like to drop off the main striker, so someone else should have partnered Vernam IMO. Then again, Jones and Matt seem more comfortable dropping off too. We just don't have that 18 yard box type do we? You know, someone like Podge perhaps?

Think we were playing 4 4 1 1 hence Vernham playing deeper as he has more creative skills.

I said as soon as we conceded the second that we needed an immediate change……but no we had to wait another 10 minutes

Once DJ got on then we started to look lively but he (and Matt) just didn’t have enough time to turn things around

Why we had to wait for the substitution(s) heaven knows because with Woolford staying on we were just wasting our own  time

Apparently Vernam was the highest scoring u23 player in Europe only two years ago, so I’d assumed he would be more of an out and out striker than a number 10. But yep, podge would be ideal for us.
