Asante back at Grimsby on Tuesday and wants to fight for his place. Went to Solihull to get match fit which he did under Richard Money who then departed suddenly, new Manager came in, Mark Yates, wanted his own striker in who has scored 1 goal in 10 games. (That goal was laid on by Asante). Asante just warmed the bench up.

If he’s fit he should start with the kid from derby

And Assante has scored 0 goals in 10 games. How many did he start?

I'd like him to be the answer, but I can't see it. If he was that good, the manager wouldn't leave him out.

Based upon? Oh I think I know the answer based upon our current strikers are useless, get it!

The new manager in at Solihull puts a new angle on it, potentially. We all know how that works, new manager in, certain players frozen out, managers favourites kept top of the pecking order.
Still think he could offer something, just a shame he has so much to prove to a manager with very little apparent clue as to what a good striker is or how to get them playing to their best.

You don't suddenly forget how to score goals. Look at his record in the past. For Birmingham City throughout his Academy days and development squad, top scorer. Solihull Moors top scorer in one and a half seasons, even with the half season he still ended up top scorer.(Look at you Tube).

Strikers work on confidence, he knows he has to give it everything. Lets just see give him a chance, he could solve the goal issue.

When Asante went to Solihull, he was not fit, he had not played any matches at Grimsby. He went to Solihull to get fit, this he did before the manager that brought him in on loan left, so a bit unfair to look at his goal ratio, when the games he did play he was achieving match fitness.

Jamie Osborne for instance went to Solihull match fit.

"You don't suddenly forget how to score goals"

I'm not sure how that theory fits in with the current team :B
But yes, he needs at least the same amount of chances/game time as Hooper, that'd be a decent evaluation period and only fair.

On the bench Saturday?

Ease him in with a few minutes here and there to get him up to speed.

God knows we need him.

If he's fit he should play. We haven't scored that many in the last 14 games to justify keeping a (semi) decent striker out.

Am i missing something here?

Why do people think he needs to start?

He played 90 mins on boxing day and hasn't played since

before that he played a total of 278 minutes from 8 games, a possible of 720 minutes...

he scored 1 in 9 for us and and none in the 11 games he was involved in at Solihull on loan...

If we are hoping he will change our fortunes, it really isn't looking great  :o

It just shows how desperate we are for goals. I haven't see much of him in a Town shirt, but what i have seen i was quite impressed with. He clearly knows how to score goals and his showreel suggests he scores all types. Left foot, right foot, headers, short range, long range and you don't lose that skill. If he can recapture even a portion of that, he must surely be in the reckoning. He couldn't possibly do worse than what we have.

Asante's loan stats at Solihull are not encouraging but after months of fruitlessly shuffling the Matt/ Vernon / Jones / Hooper pack, why not start him? You never know, something might click

Yes, he seems two footed was my point, which is always a bonus in a player, especially a striker, in that he is comfortable whichever foot a chance lands on.

He will do ok if he can leap like a Salmon cos let`s face it any chances he gets will need to be converted from about 7ft above his head.

What some people are missing is that the stats do not tell the bigger picture.
He went out on loan to get fit, that includes match fitness. So it took him a handful of games to get there . The style of play under Richard money was to play the ball on the deck. When the new manager arrived he played the long ball wanting akwasi to change his style.next game he brought his own forward in whose record is 1 in 10 aware during this period has been used as a sub coming on with 10 mins to go. As someone pointed out it may not work at grimsby because RS plays a similar  way hoof the ball to the front instead of of via the midfield.

If Asante has anything about him this is a golden opportunity to stake a place and make a mark in a league club.

The competition ain't great the team/naigh WE the fans are crying out for a natural finisher.

Somebody we can cheer on and take our minds off the shenanigans off the pitch.

Go for it son we are desperate for success.

Well, his 'goals reel' still looks encouraging. You don't know how many chances he was getting in those games and it was against non-league opposition, but plenty of calm finishing on show in that video clip.

Assuming he gets a game, the main problem will still be creating the chances in the first place!

Go 4-3-3 with normal back four, McAllister, Summerfield & Jones in midfield with Dembele, Asante and Vernam up top.

Picked McAlister soley on how he played against Plymouth and the fact that things cannot get much worse, if he is not fit put Rose in there.

Hopefully, this would give some pace, skill and a chance to play those balls in behind their back four and get some pressure in the final third. May leave us a bit exposed at the back but if Mc can manage 90 minutes with Summers to help out could work.

Certainly, IMO worth a punt as you never know!!!!!

We need to sign an athletic letft back as that formation requires energy from the full backs to give the width, Mills could do that but neither Davies or Dixon could

Asante had the op to rectify an old injruy and he went for match fitness to Solihull, where he was not the chosen option by the new manager - not his fault - he needs some training again to adjust, but must be given a fair crack of the whip to see if he can provide a solution to the goal famine.

Root cause is we are back to playing hoofball which is Slade's rubbish style that will continue to lose fans and lose matches as teams suss us too easily !

Slade = Bignot - great talking to the media but cannot convert thoughts into on the field actions, particularly with strange team selections that do not work !

Funny how Hurst is getting more air time now in League 1, and looks far more confident in front of BBC and Sky cameras than BT non league coverage !! We lost a good tactician, player spotter, and man manager there !!

4 ex Mariners in his squad, and several of his targets that have gone to join him after we failed to sign them - tells a "behind the scenes" story there, I think !!.

The 4 ex mariners were largely unappreciated when here. Toto got lots of stick for his tendency to switch off. LJL was hugely criticised by some for missing a few sitters. Rodman, I don't really remember anybody being too fussed when he left. Nolan divided opinions. 3 of those left us to go to a higher level, although the Rodman deal fell through. Toto left and that was largely due to abuse he got in one game.

The ones who we failed to sign have joined a league 1 team rather than a league 2/national league side. I don't see a lot of "behind the scenes reasons" for any of those things.

I don't doubt this is true as you clearly know Asante. And this is just absolutely ridiculous. We've barely scored at all in the last few months and Slade isn't even giving Asante a chance to train with the first team, let alone prove what he can do in a competitive game. None of our strikers have shown themselves to be undroppable, in fact at least two of them have been proven to be pretty useless. Yet he's not even willing to give someone with a proven goalscoring record a chance. Admittedly, it is proven at a lower level but Hooper and Vernon have already shown they can't cut it at the level we're at. At least give Asante that chance before writing him off. Unbelievable.

I realise I may be targeted for this but why is it that Slade has discarded practically every Bignot signing. It’s all well and good saying that they’re now playing at Conference level but Slade is the one that sent them there. Yussuf looked fit and strong in pre-season and then was surprisingly sold off to Barrow, while Scott Vernon (with the same amount of time left on his contract) remained. And even players with better technical ability like Clements and Osborne have been shipped out to accommodate shite like Berrett and Kelly. It’s almost like it’s been done to prove a point, especially if this Asante news is true.

A bit harsh against Berrett who has been OK (and I'm far from his biggest fan) when he has played this season. Kelly has shown absolutely nothing, but I don't think it's fair to link Berrett in with him.

Don't disagree with your general point, especially about Yussuf vs Vernon and I thought Clements was good last season.

I wonder how much of this is a wages issue? Were these players (Clements especially) on more money than Slade thinks they are worth?

Regardless, the basic fact is that Slade's signings so far haven't been good enough in general, whatever they are earning.

So when Slade said yesterday "we will have a look at him ", what he meant was Woods can have a look at him, because i'm not interested. Was he just sent out to ease the wage bill?

Never mind, we have Hooper, Vernon, Cardwell, Matt, Jones and now Vernam banging the goals in, so we don't have room for another striker. He's not going to get a look in is he?

Unless Asante is being "disruptive" to the group, as RS likes to call them, then this is a very unproffessional and disrepective way to treat one of our players.

All players, unless causing trouble in the camo, should be treated with respect even if they are not deemed good enough for selection.

The more we learn about how the current squad are being managed the less hope I have that results, never mind performances, are going to improve.

About to visit the barbers, his shop is adorned with bloody Lincoln shirts and memorabelia and it is going to be a pretty painful visit whilst he not only takes the p... But shows me my extending Friar Tuck patch which I am normally obscured from seeing. On second thoughts in this cold weather I will keep it in place for another week as you just never know, we could have won and/ or RS may have been sacked which would at least give me something positive tjo say about town.

Of our strikers, Matt is a decent hold up striker and Jones is a good midfielder, the rest are frankly awful so why not take a look at him?

My suspicion is that Slade almost thinks he has to prove that Fenty was right to sack Bignot by getting shot of the Bignot signings. Last season Osborne and Jones looked like the spine of our side and two of the most exciting players in League 2. Osborne has gone back to part time and Jones is going backwards at a rate of knots. This is a huge indictment on Slade.

Not when it comes to the decision making at GTFC.

Evidence points to certain individuals driven by strengthening their power and influence above all else..

Regarding Asante, I'd have liked to see what he could do, surely no worse than the total output of the rest of the forwards this season..

Lets not bundle all the players in this category, there are a few players in the squad now who are busting a gut to get a win, no names we all know who they are,  but they themselves are being hindered by outdated tactics and poor quality in some positions especially strikers.

Asante trained again with the youth spent 15 minutes with them, they cut it short because the other players were playing tomorrow. He is putting extra training in even if Slade does not want him, at least he will be fit if he goes out on loan or someone comes in for him. What is disappointing and shows bad manners is that since he has been back, not one of the management team have spoken to him.

Deserved a chance, was injured before RS was appointed. Sent out on loan, change of Manager who did not want/play him. So what has RS seen that say's I don't want him and get him to train with the youths [allegedly.]

As our other forwards are drawing blanks he must be given a chance to show what he can do.

There are obviously two sides to every story but I can't imagine why any manager would treat a contracted player in such a manner. If they've been agitating for a move or causing trouble within the squad, then I suppose so, but Asante can't have been doing this because he's not been here.

Only thing I can think of is that it's just his way of trying to force unwanted players out without paying them off fully.

Because RS is a complete twit?

Where's Matt Dean, JT, Burnsy, Nigel Lowther et al when we encounter such a vacuum of info about our squad? Are the players treated as badly as the fans?
Thanks for the update Grimreaper but you have depressed me further!

If pressed Slade will only deny it. I think the reason for playing the youths in the reserve match earlier this week was an attempt to force a number of players out of the club.

Probably a bit of mind games from Slade to move the player on and free up some wages. Asante probably wants to stay and fight for his place while he’s still got 6 months left of a decent football league contract. But Slade wants him out to allow more room for manoeuvre in the wage budget so gives him the silent treatment to alienate him and make him feel totally unwanted so he then asks for a move. I doubt it’s going down well with the rest of the squad.

If Slade treated a child like this when he was teaching there would have been hell on, so why does he treat an adult this way?

I just felt the fans on this forum needed to know the truth.
If RS does not want him, why is he not man enough to tell him face to face. I speak to Akwasi everyday. He has not moaned once, stays in a bedsit on his own and gets on with the job.

However he is treated Akwasi will be putting in a full training whatever happens.

Genuine question to clarify matters,... is asante training with just the youth team, instead of the full team? Also is this short term or permanent? Oh and how old is he as I've forgotten.  And finally.... does he commute from Birmingham area or live locally?

Not defending slade, but wanna know more.

One more thought.... can anyone on the fishy post the career goal scoring records of all of our strikers and midfielders ?!!? 😆

Asante could be just what we need right now, it’s not as if the other strikers are doing enough to keep him out of the team. He could be like a new signing to the team but RS has seen his backside with him for some reason and we know full well that probably spells the end for Asante at GTFC.

Keep plugging away Akwasi, we’re all rooting for you over that clueless, sorry excuse for a football manager!

What slade needs is someone to confront him with this. We are all sick to the back teeth of him, why does he continue to lie to us? Spout his rubbish in every interview. Please Mr Fenty get rid of him

Problem is that in the trumpesque world of blundell park these days- journalists must not ask questions...

In answer to your questions:
1. Akwasi is training with the youth teams not the 22 players in the first team squad. On Tuesday couple of the senior players got niggles while playing 11 vs 11. Instead of getting Akwasi to fill in two of the younger players were asked. A bit humiliating to say the least. Today he was involved in a bit of shape work as they say against the first team for 15 minutes. That was it. He carried on, on his own.

2. Regarding it being temporary or permanent, nobody has spoken to him so he is in the dark.

3. Akwasi is 25yrs old, 26 in September

4. At present Akwasi Stays in Grimsby from Monday morning to Saturday evening then, goes back to Wolverhampton to spend little time with his young family, then he is back to Grimsby for Monday.

I hope I have answered your questions.

With regards to goals have a look at Akwasi's on you tube there are plenty of them, and when he went up against Nathan Redmond, on Soccer AM.

It sounds as if I am trying to sell him to you, that is not correct, his record speaks for himself, even though blighted by a serious injury in the early days, needs a fair chance either at Grimsby or any club.

He is a nasty, horrible, unproffessional dishonest person who has lied or stretched the truth since his very 1st interview, the one where he was asked about his 1st contact with fenty.....so untrustworthy it's unreal and what a way to treat one of your players.....we could of easy reached the play offs this season but sadly slade has either got shut of the players that would of got us there or not played to their strengths, and as for his signings well i wouldnt trust him with another penny....awful clueless manager and it's only a matter of when he leaves not if

As others have mentioned, the depressing thing is that pretty much all of the players look like they are actually trying their hardest. A lack of effort could be dealt with one way or another. A lack of ability can't.

It’s not necessarily a lack of ability. It’s a lack of being able to do a certain job in a certain way.

I do believe that we have a squad that has the ability to finish top half of the table.

But only if that squad is used correctly.

If you try to use a hammer as a screwdriver it would be sh1t.
But it doesn’t mean it should be thrown out of the toolbox. !!

Frankly reading that I am disgusted with Slade. I never wanted him back but this goes too far. He needs calling out on this it's no way to treat someone trying their best to make it in the game.

I agree Grimsby have the players to be able to comfortable retain their status in the league, but as you point out some of the players are not being played in there natural positions, I look at the players that RS has got rid off this year,  would have done a good job, they are better players than what he has replaced them with, but until he changes the big hoof ball game the team is going to struggle.

It does remind me though of the new manager at solihull moors , he plays the same way hoofing the ball up. They are in the bottom 3.

This. Can’t believe Asante is being treated in this way especially given the fact that we aren’t exactly blessed with significant talent in the attacking areas.

It's beggars believe he isn't getting game time in this squad. It sounds like his commitment is second to none and he wants to lay for the team isnt this the sort of player that should be in the first team rather than a group of people that couldn't give a toss

That's good to hear. Obviously we've only got your word for it, but against the man who claimed he was worried about his job because of erroneous reports about Woodhouse (knowing full well why Woodhouse was there), I'm prepared to believe it.

And we wonder why we can't get any quality players through the doors while slade is in charge. In fact I'd be surprised if any would come apart from players THAT desperate to move.

Not sure which route is best for the players being alienated by the management, but this for me hammers another nail into the slade out coffin. A squad can't work in disharmony as is being proven by the results on the pitch.

The sooner a clear out is made the better

Players training with the youth team is nothing new but it does seem particularly harsh in this case. It also highlights the problem with having too big a squad which despite what he says I blame Slade for. He bleats on like he's just got the job when in fact he had time at the end of last season to assess the squad and a full summer to rebuild. No coming back from here - time to get rid.
Posted by: IlkleyMariner, January 20, 2018, 11:05am; Reply: 104
The treatment that Asante is getting from Slade is not uncommon when a manager decides that a player is not good enough.

The point is more about Slades judgement. He seems to freeze out players he doesn't rate, favour others who seem useless and comes up with comments that we can't afford better players we were promised.

If we can't afford better players, don't come out with stupid promises and work with what we have got. For me that's the issue more than anything else.
