Posted by: HertsGTFC, November 4, 2017, 2:23pm; Reply: 5
Rose is injured apparently, should be starting with DJ instead of Woolford for this one IMHO, another long trip next weekend should have resulted in some rotation

I imagine we are persisting with Woolford to get him match fit and that's why DJ can't get in.

I can't see the sense in just starting the same line up week after week, regardless of opposition, or venue, or form and fitness of individuals, and given that we really aren't scoring any goals I would've thought it a good idea to make one or two changes amongst attacking players.

The season gets more boring as it goes along. Worst cup draw ever and out already, yet again. We didn't even have the decency to get properly beat- just a slow agonising 1-0, all the time hoping we could get an equaliser, but knowing deep down that it would never happen.

I'm having some prolonged dental work done next week and it will probably be more enjoyable than a Russel Slade football team.

Its okay everyone getting on the backs of our forwards but its not their fault.
You have to blame the way Slade wants his football played.
It is so negative.
I think we have got goals in the front line if Slade lets his midfielders push forward to support them.
Slade will not change our left hand side. Its so slow going forward with the slug out there it unbelievable.
Watch how our MFs have a defensive mind set throughout the game.

I was filled with dread when Slade was named manager again. The only thing that buoyed me up again was when Wilko was named assistant.  Unfortunately it seems Wilko has nothing to add or Slade just doesn't listen. Hmmmm, which is it?

It's interesting, the Gimps I know here in Lincoln are getting rather bored of the football and lack of cutting edge up front, if it wasn't for the nauseating Cowley love-in the management would be getting it in the neck as bad as Slade.

So who will grab the much coveted goal scorer first, us or them? Because it's no coincidence that when we played Lincoln a few weeks back it was a rather turgid 0-0 draw and no coincidence we both went out of the cup 1-0 today.

A goal-grabber for either club could see their team into the play-off positions...so who's out there ???
Posted by: ginnywings, November 4, 2017, 5:33pm; Reply: 86
We probably don't need another striker, we need a change of mindset. Plymouth are struggling big time this season and we needed to go there and pressure them from the off. They will be severely lacking in confidence, but if nothing else, we are a team that are good at getting no-hopers back to winning ways. At least we are consistent at that.

Agree with this and that "mind set" is generated by the manager, today was a day to start DJ and then get Bolarinwa running at them for a bit in the 2nd half. I actually feel for our strikers sometime as the supply has often been sh1te.

I refuse to believe that we could not have gone more attacking today with Jones in mid field alongside Summers and Berret and a front 3 just to offer something different.

Our season is over IMHO if he does not go more adventurous in some games, especially at BP.

Definitely, but that would mean dropping his mate Clarke and playing Osbourne to give us more pace at the back so we didn't have to drop so deep, retrospectively signing another left back that he could trust so we didn't have to play a more defensively minded Woolford, retrospectively signing a bit more quality in central midfield to drive us forward and retrospectively investing Hooper and Matt's wages into one striker..

Serious question now.....how much would it cost to buy Amond from Newport? Plenty of clubs have admitted and rectified transfer/contract mistakes in the past. I think he would come back here in a heartbeat and it would only take Fenty to admit we made a mistake and get his cheque book out for us to have to firepower to make a serious playoff push

There going well compared to recent seasons so the answer to your question is "silly money" at this level. This issue for me was when he first came to GTFC.

I know he didn't have a great record the season before he came to but that might be as he didn't start that much but surely we should have given Podge 2 years when we first sold him? If he had scored all those goals and we failed to get up we could have just sold him either way.

I thought Dixon was our MOM in the first game of the season at Chesterfield.
He's a steady enough League Two defender for me.

The stick him and Woolford get is way OTT and maybe stems from the "FIFA generation" were some believe you have to have pace to be any good. I said after last week him or Woolford would be ok on that left side with a more athletic player with them (think Townsend overlapping Monkhouse) but both of them together doesn't do then any favours.

For the goal today, Dixon dives in and commits himself but where is the next man applying pressure? Woolford and Berrett both stand and watch him waltz into the box and shoot. I don't get from those highlights that Dixon had a shocker, couple of errors but also looked like he was left on his own 1v1 with Carey far too often with no cover, which shouldn't be happening.

Aye. It's a grand old Grimsby tradition, scapegoating. We must be one of the Lost Tribes of Israel.

The other players looked leaden when Carey waltzed past them.
Posted by: moosey_club, November 4, 2017, 11:13pm; Reply: 105
Scapegoat ?
Is it coincidence that when the away side causes us issues its usually down our left side ?
This has been the case for most of the season.

He really isnt good enough, far too one footed,  distribution is poor, gets caught square too often making it easy for players to drift past him and is too slow to offer anything going forward ( not that this is my main requirement of a full back ) and gets stripped by any pacey winger.

Not scapegoating..just pointing out his shortcomings. He does have the benefit by having left sided Danny Collins to cover across which he regularly has to do.

However...its not his fault we havnt any cover for left back.

Maybe Collins could drop there with K Osbourn coming into the centre berth.

Yup. Purely Grimsby. No other player at any other team has had stick.  Fans of every other team in the country are always 100% behind all their players and management whatever happens !!

Whether or not the criticism is justified (personally I think he is the weak link) is one thing.  But calling it a ‘Grimsby’ or a ‘fishy’ trait is total bollox.  It happens at nearly every team worldwide.
Posted by: chaos33, November 5, 2017, 7:04am; Reply: 107
He is weak, and for some reason, management have decided that we shall have no other left back in the squad, so we are stuck with his limitations and he has no pressure on him for his place.
Posted by: Davec, November 5, 2017, 7:30am; Reply: 108
I am puzzled by Dixon, he's got a decent pedigree, only a few seasons ago he was a regular in the championship in a decent Huddersfield team, got 4 international caps for Scotland but yet he comes here and he looks extremely poor in my opinion, considering he is supposed to have a wand of a left foot I don't think he has, why is his career in a big downward spiral at 30.

Our left side is as bad as we have had in the last 10 seasons.
Dixon is a bad defender and hopeless going forward.
Woolford has a good football brain but not the body to go with it thats why I call him the slug.
These two get in the side because they drop into the manager negative footballing ethos.
Im not scapegoating them its just that they are not good enough, we seem to be getting hammed defensively and have no threat offensively down that side.

Don't know about Dixon but WTF was Berret? (no.7) doing just stood there and let him waltz into the box ffs he should have at least made a challenge even a foul from outside the box at that angle they would have to do something special to score.

No.7 to blame all day long for me.   >:( ??) ??)

Whilst I agree with the comments about our left side, you aren't going to win many games if you fail to score on such a regular basis. When you look at Slade's 5 attacking signings (Hooper, Matt, DJ, Dembele and Cardwell), the latter three have not played in the league before coming here and the other 2 have got a scoring record of approximately 1 goal in every 5 games. I'm not saying we should break the bank but it's no good making a million quid and then losing it again because no-one wants to watch 'Grimsby nil' every week.

Its like im always saying on here that if the front men dont get any service or support the strikers will never never have a chance to prove themselves.
As for not playing before Dembelis doing okay👍

I know Dembele is doing OK but how much better would he be doing with a decent striker who moves into threatening areas to play with?

Do we? 3 goals conceded in the last 6 league games and they were in away victories.

Not scoring is the problem but somehow that seems to be Dixon's fault. He's not nearly as bad as people are claiming.

Problem is that he's not Danny Andrew.

'Tis true, but i seem to recall Andrew got better as the season wore on, after he had been out of the game for a while.

If we got the ball down and worked harder at moving into space to receive it I reckon that most of our players would look better.

Very true - it's hard to make passes to players who are marked and don't try to lose their markers.

That's a bit like saying celebrating Christmas isn't a British tradition because they do it worldwide.

I don't know if fans of other clubs do it (I tend not to be that interested) but we do have a habit of over-criticising one individual at a time. Bit of a mob mentality.

Slugs being renowned for their football brains. "Oh yes, I taught Franz Beckenbauer all he knew. It was me who came up with the concept of the libero. I would have been in the World Cup squad but for an unfortunate incident with salt."
