Just heard delayed kick off due to Town being caught in traffic en route - superb preparation for one of the most important games of the season !!!

Do we never learn from previous mistakes ??

Hope it doesn't affect the team too much tonight!!

How many times does this have to happen to us? It's utter dogshit for the fans who've got to work tomorrow, and means the players turn up totally unprepared :(

Anyone know the Live Event number?

I presume the delay is due to the power failure on the London network?

I am quite impressed with Hurst's choice of Nsiala at right back, although i dont think Gowling is as good as Nsiala at centre back this at least shows Hurst being a little tactical.

Reason was stood like 2ft in front of him when he was trying to take a goal kick. Wouldn't back away despite him repeatedly trying to step away from him to take the kick, so pushed him and he went straight over. Hard to fault Macca - Reason was just being a male private.

Ref wasn't taking any of it though. Credit to the ref - he seems to have been really solid throughout. Not like some of the ref's we've had this season!

Well taken goal from Arnold. Palmer should have made in 2-0. Eastleigh gradually got back into it and have caused a few hairy moments. Gowling and Pearson are doing well though

1-0 is not enough. We had another 42 minutes to kill the game and even kill the tie. I just hope we don't pay for that.

FFS Town, great start, all over them and created 4 great opportunities in 10 minutes...since then virtually not had a kick in their half, no possession , sitting deeper and deeper....letting them come into it.
Go and win the fking game tonight, 1-0 isnt comfortable for tonight or to bring back home, they were all over the place and we slow the game down, start dallying on taking throw ins etc.
Proper let them off the hook.

We can't let a side like Eastleigh wriggle their way into this with niggly fouls because they'll win that battle.

Our quick start shows they can't cope with a high line and directness, ironically. Then again, that shouldn't be a surprise given the amount of goals they've shipped this season. I don't think defence is something they work on all that much.

I hope we don't afford them time, or opportunities to back into our defenders when the ball is in the air. We should be pushing out, pinging it over their heads and getting their defenders to turn and face their own goal, threaten them with Arnold and Mackreth's pace to get in behind.
Posted by: The_Chief, April 30, 2015, 9:00pm; Reply: 88
Too many long balls.  Eastleigh have a very deep back line.  The odd diagonal ain't a bad idea, but we are trying it too much, giving the ball away too cheaply.  Keep the ball on the deck and we can win this 2 or 3-0.  It should be at least 2-0.  If only it would be that easy.  Eastleigh are the second highest scorers in this league, so they are going to get chances: we need to keep it tight at the back and not give them anything to get excited about.
Posted by: ginnywings, April 30, 2015, 9:00pm; Reply: 89
Done what we've done a few times away. Created loads of early chances and only took one of them. Now conceding too much ground and giving the ball away inviting pressure.

Agree, we never really looked in trouble but all they need to do is get a bit lucky. Hope to see us take far more control after the break. We haven't clicked yet.

I'm only repeating what I just tweeted, but those opening 10-15 mins should've given the players bags of confidence.

But since then we've played like we're bereft of confidence. It doesn't sound like they want to work hard to retain possession and do the things they did in the first half that hurt Eastleigh.

This is the stage of the game where the players need to be committed to working harder than ever before. The opposition can't score if they can't get the ball.

Be strong. Keep moving. Work to find space, get the ball, pass it, move. Repeat.

No time to stand still and hope The Shop does all the running for you.

Great result, and should have had at least another goal on chances created, but generally a poor performance I thought. Gave the ball away cheaply, sat too deep, never managed a spell of pressure, didn't pass it well or get in behind them enough. Pearson superb, and all the defenders did well, but too many individuals did very little. Agree with Paul Hurst - pleased with the result, but we can be much better than that. A typical Town play off performance really, except this time the result went our way.

I didn't think they really troubled us and don't look all that dangerous.

A win is a win.

So why am I feeling disappointed?

It could have been curtains for Eastleigh tonight and an easy ride for Town on Sunday, that's why.

Making hard work of getting a result against a lesser team. Wasted possession again. Failing to keep the ball. Humping the ball up from the back time after time. Having to do far more running about to get it back. Putting the defence under pressure.

We should be better than that. We need to show it on Sunday because they've nothing to lose now. They will be up for it and they are only one goal down when we should have been out of sight.

Watched it on BT and the story of Towns season in one game really. Should be 3 up at HT but have to settle for a narrow one goal advantage. So the opposition start 2nd half still in it. One thing that was noticeable throughout the season and especially tonight is how Town struggle when the game turns scrappy. We seem to have no tactic to turn to and ride it out. Inevitably we drop right off, invite them on and concede a scrappy goal.
I do hope we take it them on Sunday, their back line was for the taking.

Nathan Arnold said it himself post match, we do things the hard way.....we only played anything like a half decent football team for ten minutes and relied on two wonder strikes out of pretty much nothing to win the game....i dont recall either winger putting a cross into the box all night, i dont recall any passage of play where we put 4/5 passes together, yes we won....an improvement over previous attempts so progress but relying on being able to defend high balls isnt my idea of a game plan or a sustainable way of winning....thats why i answered the posted question of .....why still feeling disappointed?

Thought 2-1 was fair we were the better side but not by a mile. We dominated the first 20 and last 20 of the match.

Thought Eastleigh were a bunch of cheats and was ii me or was the grass really long, pretty much killing any chance of proper football?

Thought Pearson, Disley and Arnold were immense,  Brown was average and I thought Macca wasn't his normal reassuring self.

Onwards and upwards - our first win in 5 attempts at non-league play off matches.

Thought his interview was embarrassing, particularly when you compare it to the carefree joker that he portrayed before the game. I thought the ref was ok, perhaps slightly favoured Eastleigh, I never expected a rant like he gave about the official's not doing their job. He made one telling comment about having to "earn" some decisions. Not sure why he completely lost it with the guy he subbed either. Hurst wins this round.

Says it all really. They knew the ball on the floor was to their disadvantage after we outplayed them twice during the season, so prepared the pitch for their aerial style of play. So that makes it an even better result, given we couldn't get the ball moving on the deck.

Hope we stuff 'em at BP.

Disappointed going on to Sunday with only a one goal advantage, should have been 3-0 up before they even threatened us.

Shaun Pearson outstanding, Disley had a great game too, not sure about Toto at right back though, he scares me at times.

Great goals by Arnold but I thought Mackreth was very poor and amazed that he lasted the full game. Brown wasn't that good either.

This - Arnold scored 2 wonder goals (the 2nd one against the run of play) and Pearson was outstanding in a defensive performance (after the first 10 minutes), when really - Town should have been 3 or 4 goals up in the first 10 minutes and we're cruising the game. Why did Town surrender their obvious superiority to Eastleigh for vast amounts of this game? Well - it must have been Town's game plan. Town got away with the keeper's flapping and the right back's naivety in that position.

Town's game plan should have been to attack the opposition wholeheartedly, because they will hurt them - but to give this up after 10 minutes (after having the home team on the ropes) is ridiculous. This tie should have been over - but it isn't - and it is frustrating.

I'd have liked to have seen us play a lot better than that but can't complain too much as we got the victory. A couple of absolute belters from Arnold. Let's hope he's got a few more left in him this season!

Palmer, Mackreth and Brown were poor for me tonight and I'd personally expect to see Clay start on Sunday. Palmer might stay in for his height with their bombardment at set pieces, but I couldn't say he deserves his place on recent form and that really was a sitter missed early on tonight. Doubt that Chappel will replace Mackreth even though he had one of his worst games for some time for me.

I'm amazed that Hill went on about the referee like that - I thought he was pretty reasonable on the night and got an equal number of decisions wrong for either side! They might have had a penalty when McKeown stupidly shoved their player, but then LJL could have had two in a minute. The fact that the pundits/commentators didn't notice the blatant shove in the back for LJL's late chance despite watching several replays was pretty poor, as was allowing Hill to moan on and on without asking him why he was trying to get into an argument with his player on the bench!

I wonder if Hill's moaning was a bit of kidology, trying to influence the referee's decisions for the second leg?
