I said a while ago that I thought Rovers would struggle once their good run came to an end. They just don't score enough goals for a side aiming for automatic promotion.

If you score goals, like Barnet, going behind in a game doesn't become too traumatic because you know you have the firepower to get you out of a hole.

Rovers just don't have that.

That substitution hasn't worked all season, its consistently invited pressure onto us, I can't remember a time when it didn't. But classic Hurst, has to go and try to prove that he's right, just has he's done for the whole time he's been in charge here. Sweet mother of Mary.  Felt like we lost that match.  How to almost lose a game away with 15 mins to go and 2-0 up.  You do subs to nullify a new threat from the opposition, not when your plan A is working and the opposition is not offering anything.  If it ain't broken don't fix it !!!!That's ruined my weekend, especially with Macc and Bristol R dropping points.  An opportunity missed to gain ground.

Why oh why change it. :-( You start doing subs like that with 3-4 mins to go, run down the clock, give tired legs a break, break down the momentum as Chester would've started to throw the kitchen sink at us with 5 to go.  As soon as you give the home team a goal the whole atmosphere changes, momentum changes, crowd gets excited, nerves set in and before you know it it's all square in the blink of an eye...

Unbeaten in 5... Chester are not a bad side and really have been a second half / last ten minute team this season.. Even I know that.. So why Hurst would invite that pressure i don't know.. Mourinho bringing on a world class defensive midfielder like Ramires / Matic etc fair one...but at conference level.. It generally doesn't work to excrement up shop.. It's too scrappy.. Poor decision but support manager all the way.. I was getting drunk.. I'm now getting Wankered drowning my sorrows haha! At least play offs look likely and with Palmer and Pitman I cracking form and LJL on way back in, I am exited.. And today may have taught us a valuable lesson for the play offs of we can't get top spot!! This Grimsby team of the last 2-3 seasons have always been better at attacking! Go for it balls out for rest

It's pretty standard practice bringing on a defensive minded player for a forward when your team is winning. You see it most weeks on tv. So I think your analogy is very poor it's not as though PH did something so terrible only a madman would do it.He had to make the subsitution whether he brought the right defensive player on is another matter but I see nothing wrong with the principle of the subsitution. Had he brought on another striker and went for more goals that we didn't need then he would have deserved the criticism.

But how many times had it won us points? You can't just ignore the credit side of the ledger book and add up all the debit column. We have won a lot of games by one goal this season when those same negative  tacitics have gained us points.

The excuses he gave were cringeworthy!! "Well we might have conceded 2 goals anyway" is as lame an excuse as I can remember!! We might have held on to leads in previous games, but we were usually hanging on at the end! How can Hurst not see that it's better to aim for a third goal and finish the game off?  :-/

He needed to bring another striker on not because we needed more goals but because we were winning by 2 goals playing with 2 up top.

Agreed a more positive substitution would have been the right decision, but that doesnt make him PH idiot. Just listened to Sean Pearson and he is obviously protecting the manager and standing by him but at the same time he is right when he says 'we have done this plenty of times already'....so I think poor decision by PH but not the end of the world, it really isnt

If you have the player to do the job, to come on, slow the game down, take possession and get the ball forward, then yes by all means it's a good option, but parslow has never done that job, and surely a professional manager should operate by using the players he actually has, rather than operating by the theory you learn doing your coaching license, which gets us onto a debate rightly brought up by Curtis woodhouse about everything that's wrong with football management in Britain these days but that's for another time

However, Hurst really must take the blame for this result especially as almost the same thing happened the week before against Woking which we got away with it. Yes take off Palmer and protect his hamstring but put on Hannah so that firstly the balence of the team isn't upset and secondly we might even have scored a third. To say I am angry even an hour after the finish of the match is the understatement of the year.

My analogy was based on your quote Rob, very poor as you may see it, I do not gamble myself but I have managed in football and feel maybe
in today's case that a striker for a striker would have been more suitable. Chester were not presenting too much of a threat also taking the score into account.
The percentage game as you put it is like rolling a dice, this IMO was not necessary.

I hope your bets paid out today ;)

The percentage choice today was to leave well alone

But how many times had it won us points? You can't just ignore the credit side of the ledger book and add up all the debit column. We have won a lot of games by one goal this season when those same negative  tacitics have gained us points.

Its all about opinions Rob,

We are 2-0 up, now if we were under the cosh and Chester was all over us then yes bring that extra defender on,

BUT

We were not under the cosh were we ?

Bringing Jolley or Hannah on might have made the game safe with a third goal,

Just bring a defender on when there is no need makes no sense.

Horses for courses as they say but Hurst ops to defend whatever the situation is on the pitch.

Christ get off his back now, he's the manager and he's doing very well this season.  Mourinho has a world class record and his defensive mentality and similar subs threw him out of the CL the other day.. I'm not comparing Mourinho with Hurst, but I'm just saying .. It doesn't always work.. He doesn't need crucifying.  If he'd of come on and said yer fair one my mistake, we would all lose faith in his decision making anytime to went wrong in the future. I think he's kept self respect and dignity and a similar sib would work in the future... 90 percent of the reason he's gettig nailed was because as soon as he made the sub JT said.. "As long as it works".. Keep supporting the team and manager and on we go!

We've won the last four games by one goal. We could have conceded late in any of those games. Today we did. Hurst plays the percentage game, the cards don't always land in our favour but on average they will. That's what the percentage game is all about.

Only by the skin of our flipping teeth Rob.

Barnet was looking shaky tip we got the late late winner(s).
Braintree and Telford - we nearly threw it all away.
Woking was a very nervy last 10 minutes.

You don't get lucky 4 / 5 times on the bounce doing the same thing. Odds are it will go wrong soon enough.

Absolutely gutted, he needs to come out and say he got that wrong. They had been right in the game and I never felt we were cruising but the second should have sealed it. The problem was parslow didn't affect the game, I think he touched the ball once, we just isolated Pittman and didn't use the extra man in midfield to keep the ball. Such a shame, I left feeling sick. They looked a decent side though.

Wanking over percentages is all very well but that's 2 points spunked away, no arguments about it. I'm a PH fan but that is one he's got wrong.

If we're dealing in percentages, GrimRob is 100% div.

He'd of got some respect if he said" my mistake, I got it wrong big time" but no, not hurst, so I think the anger aimed at him today is worthy......not how you describe

I was a hundred yards away from him today, had I been nearer I would have offered him my jester hat, IMO after the substitution he earned it

I think its a case of Hurst being a naturally cautious manager, and most of the time it works but at Altrincham and again today. He's not a bad manager, just conservative. We all wouldn't be saying this if Jolley had finished that easy chance late. If that had been Lenny, everybody would be slating him.

Hurst can't sense it like we can the title is there for the taking.

Can't someone hide YOUNG MR GRACE AWAY(YOUR ALL DO'IN VERY WELL) for another eight games and bring someone in who as ambition the mood of the players and the fans as taken another big slump was hoping for a bumper gate here against Eastleigh,

FFS HURST GO FOR IT AND STOP FECK ARSING ABOUT!!!

What ?!!!!
Willian for Oscar, like for like because of Oscar getting booked
Zouma for Matic, defender/defensive midfielder goes into a defensive midfield position due to injury, so like for like.
Drogba for Ramires, centre forward on for midfielder.
How is that defensively minded substitutions.

I would not have a go at anybody who holds their hands up and realises they've made a mistake when EVERYBODY can see it's their fault, be it a ref, a player, a manager or anything in life. It takes something called being a better person for admitting it and being able to acknowledge there is a problem and that it can be put right.  What I hate to see is something that is causing problems and finally has now failed as being seen as not a problem. It's been coming for a while and we've got away with it down to luck. To cover up your eyes and hope to luck again is absolutely ridiculous especially when you consider the team we have is capable of winning comfortably, as has been shown with the Woking and Chester games.
