Alan Alger saying Heed are a value bet after seeing the team sheets.

What is Paul Hurst playing at. Has he realised that promotion is the priority and 75% of the fans want to be knocked out of this tin pot competition.

It's not that weakened. Clay and paddy lacking game time but hardly reserves. Walker is obviously inexperienced but at least he's playing with decent players around him to really measure his progress.

Sounds like a typical Town away performance, defensive and hoping something might happen. Given we are playing v narrow midfield to stop them playing (like the home match) they seem to have a lot of time and space to play

Sad to hear the news filtering through about Aswad.  A great player on his day but he's clearly unwell and needs to get better.  It seems like the best way for him to get the support he needs is to move back South.  None of us know the facts (yet) so we should wish him well.

In other news, Paddy has just scored a worldie, for those who care.

I think this silly cup could stop us getting promoted,

More bad weather on way so even if we win tonight,

The Wrexham game could be postponed leaving us having to rearrange more league games,

I never want us to lose but tonight I will make an exception.

Then last 20 minutes, bring on LJL, Hannah and Mackreth to win the game.

If we are to reach the final of this cup,

We will have to postpone 5 more games,

Fitting them in will effect us getting out of this league,

Whats more important getting back into the league or winning this cup ?

I actually don't mind going 2-1 down. We'll be much better off playing the league game on Saturday and being out of this tinpot, two-bit cup. Let the 'going nowhere fast' midtable types fight it out for the 10 bob prize money.

I hate the FAT with a passion.  It disrupts the prime aim of the club and only the winners really gain.  However,  it is still hard to will your team to lose when 99% of the time you want them to win!

I do not know Aswad personally.  However, I  always felt that he was more sensitive than most players.  This always presents the situation where he may move on (for whatever reason).  If so, good luck, thanks for the many fine performances, and we move on.

I will particularly remember his great cross to Hannah that beat Wrexham 1-0 in a midweek game a few seasons ago.  Right in front of the Pontoon as well.  And late in the game.

Season defining moment- onwards and upwards - FA Trophy AND promotion. So what if we have to play more games - we'll have a team in the groove, positive and having a winning mentality without time to train that out of them..

At the end of the day I guess it all comes down to money. A big pay day at Wembley is too tempting a prospect for either club to turn down.

Right then, the real business of promotion is now the sole focus.  Let's get behind the squad and help urge them on to get out of this league.

Right, we better get 3 points against Nuneaton now. I'm gonna be very annoyed if we put in a lethargic and tired performance against them.

Let the massive Gateshead 500 enjoy their glorious win over the 'hated' Grimsby. And let's hope we never have to go there again or play in this horrible irrelevant little competition again. UTM.

Won our last 2 games there (alright, I had to include the trophy!).

Whatever you think of the trophy. i still hate losing to no mark part timers like Gateshead. We put out a decent side and still got battered by the sound of it, when we should have battered them at BP if we wanted to progress.

We picked an inbetween team. Either go for it or don't. All this has done has added loads of travelling, extra games and strength sapping for Saturday.

Thing is, if we dont go up, then this was our only chance of silverware this season ;)! Hopefully now we are out, wrexham can knock out these tinpot geordie tosspots, i do not like there club at all, ah well! All to nuneaton on saturday in a game we must win

Thank intercourse we don't have to endure Wembley. Unless it's in the Play Offs of course.  ;)

Wembley is a shite experience for small clubs. Shite music. Shite hyping up of the games by the announcer. Nowhere to get a decent beer.

That was our last chance to win coz now we will concentrate 100% on the league, overhaul Barnet and Bristol Rovers and take the title. Then we will take our rightful place in l2 and never return to this cess pit division.

And then I woke up and it was all a dream.

Kerr has just summed it up, if we really wanted to win it send the team that played really well on Saturday, or put out all youths and fringe players, not the mixture.

So will I, and if we do Hurst will get hammered, and rightly so. No doubt the vast majority of those who were selected tonight will be picked again on Saturday, not including Paddy of course, who couldn't possibly hope to retain his place. Presumably we can now release the likes of Winfarrah, Watson, Bignot etc and save some money.

It still hurts to lose though.

Oh well, three points on Saturday is ultimately more important.

We already have a couple of matches to catch up, and our departure helps avoid a chronic fixture pile up.

Bar Walker at right back and Paddy (who possibly would have got the nod over Brown given his recent problems) it was as strong a team as he could have put out. Palmer needed game time and it was a good opportunity for him to see whether Pitman and Palmer could play together.

I didn't think we were battered bar extra time....

There are players crying out for game time who got a tiny bit, or none - Hannah, Watson, Neilson, Winfarrah etc and others who are going to be asked to play 90 minutes on Saturday, followed by 120 minutes tonight, followed by another 90 minutes in 3 days time - Pearson, Nsiala, Disley, Arnold etc.
Then you have Paddy, who scored a great goal and has turned in a good performance, but who will be dropped. We've wasted scarce resources on some of these players who, let's face it, are never going to earn their wages if they can't get a run out in the FAT Round 2.

I don't care about the result, I just don't get the thinking behind the selections. I hope, for Hurst's sake, that there is plenty of energy in Town's performance on Saturday.

We will see whether those who advocate the 'get out of this sh*t trophy' policy are proven right come end April
As things stand in such a competitive year I'd say our chances of winning league are 20% and chances of making play offs are 60-40
So, whether we had progressed in Trophy or not I don't think it's a big issue because with or without distraction of Trophy it will be bloody tough
Lots of people need to find an excuse for failure and the FA Trophy is as good as any... but just as there is no evidence to suggest it helps a team there is no evidence to say it hampers them

Pretty much disagree with most of that. When we played them at BP, we sounded like pensioners on dope and tonight was a Paul "edging my bets" Hurst sort of line up. A kind of " i wanna win but i am not going for it" type of thing from Mr indecisive.

Go for it or don't. We had 2 bites of the cherry and did neither in either.

I'm not using this as an excuse to beat Hurst. If he had played the fringe players and gone out at the first attempt, then no worries, but we just never went for it completely in either game, so i can't see the point.

Totally agree. Said before when we got knocked out by Chasetown we didn't tear any trees up. Just seems like this competition IS A VERY POOR EXCUSE for not performing in the second half of a season.

Apparently this was down to the the shop being prevented from coming back on by the Gateshead club doctor.

Just back from a very cold night in Gateshead
JL got knocked out by the looks of it and was not allowed to take any further part in the game, I think that was the refs decision, unfortunately we had made all 3 subs and extra time had only just started.
Our second goal was only given by the female linesperson and I don’t even think our team could believe it had been given.
Gateshead’s third goal was partly down to Arnold being fouled and knocked to the floor where he decided to stay whilst complaining, The man he should have been tracking got the ball and crossed I for the goal.
Walker looked poor in the first half then took a knock early in the second half, looked like he wanted to come off but Paul changed others instead.
I can’t see why we did not either play kids and fringe players OR play the full squad that beat Barnet, A bit of both did not work tonight and for the first 20 mins we looked disjointed with no cohesion between defence and midfield.
Heard a rumour that JL may not be able to play for 10 days due to head injury, Hope not as we looked poor with palmer and Pitman upfront.

Had to listen to it and as you say it did sound disjointed , when our second goal went in although happy I was more worried about the effect of extra time . In all a game that no one wanted that could cost us in the long run . Decisions  made before during and now after will come and bite us hard on our backside I fear . Nuneaton  is now very important for us .

It would be nice to know what is going on behind closed doors to stop all these rumours too . Is he isn't  he , are they going or not , doesn't  help anyone . I know some things need to be kept secret for legal  reasons , but a statement  would help , not wishy washy sentences.
