League 2 rules out Barnsley but York are very accommodating aren't they?

Would be a waste of money, he retired 5 years ago! no manager would be so stupid to waste the money of the club he's employed by to make sure all players he signs can move the club forward............oh wait a minute........

Let's piece this together... Earlier story suggested he was looking for an attacking mid or winger. Now we know he is from a league 2 club. Who wants to throw some names out there?

Was about to post that it could be Mark Cullen based on the fact somebody on here said he couldn't get a game the other day. However, looking at the stats he's actually their top scorer and has played nearly every game so that was clearly balderdash.

Looks like he's a main man this season from the stats. Watched a bit of their game against Shrewsbury last week and Shaun Whalley came off the bench and looked by far the most likely to make something happen. Very direct, going at people, lots of crosses fizzed in. Does look like he's struggling to get a game but think we're unlikely to get him.

Newport County AFC can confirm that they have reached an agreement with Danny Crow to allow the striker to leave the club in order to find First Team Football and to progress his ambitions of going into coaching.

Danny was a key member of the team that led Newport County AFC into the Football League and has been with the Club since the start of the 2012/13 season. We would like to place on record our thanks for Danny not only on the field, but his work off the field, assisting with The Academy and the Under 16s.

Danny commented on the news "I would like to thank everyone associated with Newport County AFC for a great two and a half years at this great club."

The same Shaun Whalley that got farmed out on loan to Telford last year? Didn't think much to him when I saw him last year, but if he's doing well in the league now credit to him, funny old game!

Serious though, the guy sounds useful, but so did makreath et al. Would just like these players to do what comes natural to them and not over coached

Depends what we mean by "over-coached".

Receiving a lot of coaching can't be a bad thing. Surely it only adds to the player's knowledge or technical ability. Its then down to the players decision-making to put it into action.

Where we possibly fall down, I think, is taking away a bit of creative freedom/flexibility from players like this. The set-up of the team and the approach/tactics we have, clearly make us more solid as a defensive unit. But we've had a few attacking players (wingers ) that have possibly had their defensive responsibilities prioritised so much that it takes away from their attacking capabilities.

Nielson likes to drift off from the line and move into areas where the opposition aren't sure who should be picking him up. It gets him into good positions, causes their organisation to be disrupted, and creates space elsewhere (for full backs to exploit for example). But he often finds himself out of the team or substituted.

I could be making more of this than there is. But it is a shame when we've seen people play so well against us who don't /can't recreate this in the black & white stripes.

He was chucked back in for the Lincoln game, this was not due to an injury to anyone else, so I would suggest he just lost his place after a bit of poor form. Sadly he was injured after 30 minutes, I ilke to see him in the team, I think we have looked really exciting when we have played 433 with him and pittman playing with the Shop.

We have players with flair who are not encouraged to play with freedom/to their strengths. I know this for a fact, please don't shoot the messenger.

Rodney Marsh first raised the issue of over coaching back in his playing days. This is one of the reasons he did not play for England as much as he should, that and the alleged comment when Sir Alf is reportedly said to him ' I going to play you for the first half and pull you off at half time'

Rodney replied that's nice Alf we only get an orange at Q.P.R.

It makes you wonder though. Why sign or re-sign a player like Neilson if you are not going to play him and let him do what he does best? The same applies to Arnold. Presumably they are expected to stay on the touchline and run up and down a 10 yard wide channel but neither is that kind of player. Both have scored great goals by moving infield and both have created goals by doing the unexpected.

I have no idea exactly what the manager tells the players but we must see the result on the field don't we? From that evidence it looks as though he wants them to work in military discipline which is fine when you don't have the ball and stopping the other side from playing but obviously restrictive going forward. It seems a bit of a philosophy of fear to me.
Posted by: gtfc98, January 16, 2015, 1:08pm; Reply: 59
It's plain for all to see that Arnold should just stick to his hairdressing. He's bloody useless. Nielson on the other hand should be starting every week. I don't understand the criticism he gets from Hurst, especially considering how bad Arnold has been.

Posted by: petethemariner, January 16, 2015, 1:54pm; Reply: 62
To be fair though Mike, rightly or wrongly he was out of the side long before his injury problems, personally i feel
he has never been used in a position that would suit him best - as an attacking midfielder in a free role behind
the forwards, he is the best striker of a ball at the club and surely in a more central role he would be a danger
to the opposition anywhere within 30 yards of their goal.
Just my opinion.

The story is the same every season. Neilson starts well, appears to be our key player, and then things slide.

The team becomes more defensive, Neilson gets injured or struggles for form, and when he does play he looks like he's too scared to try anything ambitious.

Whether or not that's an instruction from the manager, I don't know. I hope not.

Every team needs one player who can be given the licence to take people on and try things out of the ordinary. Even if that doesn't quite fit in with the team philosophy, it's the sort of thing that fans pay to see.

There needs to be an end product though and so often Scott does his dribbling thing and then loses possession, so we see the fancy stuff which apparently some fans think that makes him a guaranteed starter. Also I think some are being a bit heavy on Arnold. He too is talented but sometimes does not deliver but last Sat he was probably our best player. With these two we just don't know what we are going to get and that is a problem for the manager.

My Impression of Neilson in the games I have seen him in this season is that he feels he has to do 90% of the work himself, taking on too many players etc.  In terms of actually being able to create something he is our best player IMO, but he needs to trust others to use the ball well too.
Posted by: petethemariner, January 16, 2015, 2:51pm; Reply: 67
Yes and i seem to remember he scored arguably our best goal of the season, at Gateshead a 25 yarder from a
central position, which perhaps backs up my point - how many other 'screamers' have we scored from distance
this season? Not many, if any.

I would take Meikle or Jolley would prefer Christian Jolley, also Alfie Potter is available for free he would have legs to get forward and support from midfield.

I really do despair with some on this site, 3 red crosses for suggesting that Scott Neilson could be used playing
off the attackers in a more central role and pointing out he had scored arguably our best goal of the season from
that position,i made it clear that this was an opinion, instead of being petty with the reputation thing why not
counter with an argument why this wouldn't work?
The reputation thing isn't important, but there was nothing controversial or aggressive with my posts - its all a bit
sad really.

Very true Pete. I think he isn't played there because he doesn't fit the profile of a Hurst forward. From Neilson you get 100% or 0%, a notional average attacking contribution of 50%. Hurst would rather play someone who always gives him 50% attacking flair all the time. Neilson isn't consistent but we all know that. If you bring in a player like him you have to compromise elsewhere to make up for the infuriating times he loses the ball while knowing that two or three times in a game he is going to make or score a chance nobody else could. Hurst prefers not to take the risk, just play solid and hope for a break.

Some good points RRFC, i d'ont know about you though, but i cannot remember a season when so few goals
from distance have been scored, if you look at the Lincoln game, that thunderbolt the lad scored for their first from
distance is the sort of thing Scott could do on a  reasonable basis IMO, we d'ont seem to have the flair to break down
stubborn defensive minded teams , particularly at BP and sometimes you. need to rely on a spectacular goal
Neilson in there might not work, i just feel it could be worth a go.

Totally agree -  I saw the first one of these and he was unplayable and at the top of his game, with Pittman and John - Lewis firing on all cylinders as well, the season looked rosy. Particularly with Clay, Brown and McLaughlin  completing a diamond in midfield (Clay at the back of the diamond and Neilson at the front of the diamond). The manager has not recognised the success of the formation that he selected in the Gateshead, Alfreton and Aldershot games (yes we lost at Aldershot but were the best side) and here we are (most of the players are available that played in those games) struggling to score a goal in any game.

I know. One said: 'He's done nothing this season and has looked bl00dy awful' and the other said, 'he runs about a lot and tries hard, but he doesn't get to the byeline, doesn't get crosses in, doesn't score or set up goals. I can't see what you'd want with him'.

I do hope it isn't him as these are quotes from a STH and a former YCFC employee.

Also home grown and on a three year contract, would be more than surprised ;D

According to PH in the GET, whoever it is the player concerned didn't know he was available to move until mid-week!

Possibly not then

Marc Cullen hasn't played recently for Luton. Not a bad shout.

Although it states that he will be ineligible for the FA Trophy replay at Gateshead on Monday night which suggests to me he has already played in the trophy this season in which case Whalley would fit the bill. Jolley has been up for loan for a few weeks and Hurst was only alerted that this player was up for loan this week.

He would be the second Cullen to come from Luton after Mike

The reason I don't think that it's Jolley is because of Hurst mentioning that this player was surprised at being made available. Jolley has been sent out on loan and hasn't feature for Newport recently so can't see how he'd be so surprised at being made available.

So almost everyone would be Jolley if it's not Miekle.

No offence but I hope it's not another York player - my workmate who supports York keeps referring to us as York Reserves and it's doing my nut in

Miekle came on for York yesterday to so surely it's not him.

I think Cullen fits the bill. Isn't he from this neck of the woods?

Born in NE I think but he definitely played in Humberside schools or college football whilst on Hulls books so went to school in or around Hull.

From his tweets his girlfriend and son still live in Hull and he is regularly driving down to Luton

From Ashington in Northumberland. That's a hell of a trek to Luton. So can see him wanting to be further north
Posted by: davmariner, January 18, 2015, 2:07pm; Reply: 97
Cullen is from the Newcastle area I believe. I've seen him around Hull in the last few months in the shopping centre so I'd imagine he still gravitates around that area.

If I'm honest I can't see it happening, he's been playing for them albeit, not in the last couple of weeks and he's scored some important goals for them.

He is Lutons top scorer so I cant see it although I did spot it.

Maybe that's why the player wasn't aware he was up for grabs. May want to move back north but didn't think  the club would let him go.

Have Luton signed or going to sign a striker in the window?

They signed Jayden Stockley on loan about 10 days ago. Only for a month though.

I can't see it being him besides it sounds like we maybe paying a fee for this player who was surprised to be made available.  I suppose it could be a loan but then again we are only allowed 5 in a matchday squad.  I think its an attacking midfielder klowoski the ex forest green player?

Just had a bit of a trawl on the net and Delano Sam Yorke's loan to Lincoln ended on Saturday. He's on loan from Cambridge.

Think they've signed him perm to the end of the season. Or was that another player?

Yes he has extended his contract with them till the end of the season.

So potential targets are:

Jolley
Cullen
Meikle
Ricky Miller wasn't in lutons squad yesterday so could it be him?

Miekle came on as sub for York yesterday.

I think this is a key point.  Any of thoe who have been on loan or are marked as available can be discounted

They are expected to sign Andy Johnson tomorrow too.

is this the ex Everton, palace and fulham forward, played a couple of times for England, If so a  good signing for them if they can keep him fit

According to PH/GET the clubs have agreed terms & it's now up to the player.

Think that performance against Barnet won't have hurt the situation...

So when will they make the decision / announcement - was meant to be today, if all are travelling for the re-arranged game tonight ??

Would be more excited about the potential signing than tonight's match, to be honest !!

Strong squad to take us up and out of this league HAS to be the priority !!

I see Emile Sinclair has had his contract terminated not a bad player at one stage.

I hope the performance and result on saturday doesnt mean paul will not put as much  importance in this signing..

if he is quality at our level then i hope he gets him..

@Markcullen21 Question, would you and other strikers at Luton welcome Andy Johnson if a deal could be ironed out Mark?

Something to do with the theory that Cullen will sign for us once Andy Johnson signs for Luton.

For what it's worth, I e-mailed a bloke today who is quite well-informed about things around LTFC (lifelong fan etc) and he thinks it unlikely that Cullen will be coming here despite any rumours. He mentioned that he'd heard (on good authority) that various League clubs had enquired about Cullen and, if he was to leave, it would be more likely to be to a League club.

I'd forgotten about him. It must be some very harsh red tape holding him back from joining us after all this time.

Not a league two player but james marwood has had his contract terminated by mutual consent. Quality at Gateshead. Would be a good addition. Just a thought.
