Huge crowd at Anfield that day, only just below the 50,000 mark. Liverpool only posted four crowds of over 50,000 that year vs Man Utd, Leeds, Everton and Spurs. An estimated 24,000 Grimbarians there on the day, taking the whole of the Anfield Road end, half the Kemlyn Road stand, plus a 2,000 overflow in the Kop, much to the horror of the Scousers. I think, if my memory serves me right that two or three Town fans suffered knife attacks in there, or they "met Stanley" in the local terminology?

In the following round Liverpool played Bury at home, which is basically a local derby, and only 43,000 in attendance. Can't be sure, but given the scale of Town's support that day, it wouldn't surprise if it was the biggest ever away following at Anfield? Big First Division games at the time would have had limits placed on the away support, but nobody - certainly not LFC or the police were expecting anything like the huge following who went.

I remember one scouser saying to his mate "F uck me, this is like an away match"!

They were sore after we beat them. LOL!  I to was at that game with brother John and other family members. If only Kevin Kilmore had scored early on for the 20k plus Grimbarians in attendance.  ( Flack jacket for me is it? )

Yes it was a great day out. As you say, if only Kevin Kilmore hadn't frozen in front of the Kop.
Although we lost 5-0 we were proud of the team taking on probably the best team in the world at the time.
