Today, I'm on the Isle of Wight and 'the spirit' moved me to the eastern side, where there is a monument. The monument stood for the great deeds (marine orientated) of the Earl of Yarborough (whose surname was Pelham). I immediately realised that this chap was actually from Lincolnshire. In fact - I used to be in Yarborough House at school and in the school holidays, worked for Pelham Construction (which built a lot of repetition housing in Grimsby). Small world syndrome occurred. But this same chap was instrumental in the formation of Grimsby Town F.C. What a man!

I worked with somebody who had connections with the Earl,

He said he was a true gent,

BUT

His estate manager was a right git.

Perhaps a similar hierarchy at GTFC will get us back in to the proper football league 8)

Isn't he one of the richest men in the country?

No Kingston Mariner - this was a surprise encounter of a monument on the Isle of Wight (near Shanklyn). This was the 1st Earl of Yarborough (I think the current one is the 8th), in the mid 1800's and I've read Wiki since. I realised last week there was a link between North Lincs and Isle of Wight. (arrived home a couple of hours ago and delighted to find out that Town won at Wrexham)

The poster C. MacKenzie believes the current Earl of Yarborough to be quite rich.

What I thought was - it would be good to find out (or reinforce) how Grimsby Pelham got it's name in the 19th century. It occurred to me that the Yarboroughs were influential in this and, if this is so, do they support the Mariners now or would they, if they were invited to?

I have got an invitation at home that was given to my Great Grandfather by the then current Earl, to attend the coming of age garden party of the Heir apparent, Charles Sackville Pelham, Lord Worsley, the fifth Earl of Yarborough in 1905.
My G Grandfather worked on the estate at the time and was good friends with the then fourth Earl, Charles Alfred Worsley Pelham.
Unfortunately Charles Sackville pelham was killed nine years later in the war.
I didn't know my G Grandfather, he died twenty years before I was born, but my Grandfather used to tell me about him.

Didn't realise the current one had converted to Islam. Interesting chap by all accounts.

I live about 75yds from the EoY's former townhouse in Pelham Rd on Sackville Street. This thread explains a lot!

I don't think Pelham was instrumental in the formation of the football club. It was just a bit of forelock tugging, that they named the club after the Yarborough family name.

I didn't realise there was a Sackville link to the Pelhams.

Plans to alter some of the structure so it can be turned into a modernish hotel, apparently.

Obviously much better to have most of the building (which is named "The Yarborough Hotel") unused than have it used as a hotel!

Perhaps they are insisting that "The Bank" pub across the road is converted back into stables for the hotel for proper authenticity?

Sounds bonkers Maringer. They do seem to get very purist about change at EH. Conservation should be about preserving things - and that means accepting necessary changes rather than letting them fall down.
