Team news should be just round the corner, time to see how much of a difference having more first choice players will have on us.  A win here would change the atmosphere and hopefully kick start the season, a loss and Monday suddenly looks big for Hurst.

Come on Town.

I think Pitman and LJL will be a good pairing.

Would not have dropped dis( not for this game) he gives us something in the box and he played there back in may, poor decision there paul

Disley has been poor this term so far and yet Paddy was our best player in pre-season.
Good move I think, lets the team know that no ones place is safe - even the captain's.

If we win the game Hurst will be congratulated for the decision, if we lose he'll be criticised.
Hope it pays off.

C'mon you Mariners

Personally I think this will be dizza last season. Give paddy his chance in midfield for a change we know what dizza gives us but from what ive seen he doesn't look as mobile or energetic at the moment.

Agree with this, it's a difficult match and feel that Disley's experience and the ability to get in the oppositions box would have been a big asset today.  Nevertheless, PH see's the players on a daily basis and no matter what we must trust PH whilst he is manager to make the right decisions.

Team news.

McKeown, Boyce, Pearson, Toto, Magnay, McLaughlin, Brown, Neilson, Clay, Pittman and Lenny

Connell and Disley drop to bench. Very defensive midfield apart from Neilsen. Hope we can get it out to him on the left as Rodman now great at defending

Not at the ground but assume we will line-up like this.

                    McKeown

      Toto         Pearson      Boyce

Magnay           Brown            Neilsen

            Clay          McLaughlin

             LJL           Pittman

I suppose we need to rotate it a bit, with us playing 2 games in 3 days.    Think we need diz and alan in there though.  easier game on Monday (on paper!). Time will tell though.  UTM

Not listening to the coverage, but that line-up looks like a 4-3-1-2 to me. Or 4-3-2-1 - El Tel's Christmas Tree formation!

Dropping Disley but leaving Clay in the team is baffling, unless Disley isn't properly fit.

Easy to flag that up now we're 3-0 up Les!

With Cook, Ironside & Jennings scoring today i'd say for this boards sake it's a damn good job it is 3-0  ;D

Half time: Gateshead 0 Grimsby Town 3

Fantastic first half from Town.  Need to keep it up in the second half and and close this game down, would happily take this as the final result now.

Gateshead did start to come back into it for the last 15 minutes of the half and rattled a few shots in although they never threatened goal.

Pleased for the whole team, especially for NEILSON.

Brilliant result, totally out of the blue and the best reaction possible after the first 3 games. Especially John Lewis who i'm happy to say has clearly had a stormer today. Hopefully both he and the rest of the team can use this as a catalyst for the season and Hurst realises this team CAN attack and can score goals.

Totally different feeling towards the season already and hopefully this will only spark fans enjoyment of it again. Hopefully the football stays positive, positive football = positive fans.

Humberside said that we shredded Gateshead into pieces.  A quite graphic description.

They also said "who expected this result?", and a voice in the background replied "no one!".

Interesting to note comments at this start of this thread regarding the team selection being defensive in midfield. What will be capable of with our strongest team and having the confidence to really go at teams?
Posted by: pontoonlew, August 23, 2014, 5:53pm; Reply: 275
I still don't think that was our strongest side, I've a feeling in an ideal world Hurst would probably have had 3 different players on the pitch which is quite exciting.
Posted by: 1739 (Guest), August 23, 2014, 5:54pm; Reply: 276
Macca makes the point that we have been playing with 4 centre midfielders due to injury and suspension. If we win on Monday then I would say it has been a good start considering we have been down to the bare minimum in terms of players available to us.

Posted by: chaos33, August 23, 2014, 7:47pm; Reply: 279
I suppose we need to identify what it was we did differently and well, and replicate it! Sounds like the shape was right. Quite a few of us have been discussing this for a while. No coincidence that Hurst did one or two key things differently and it's paid off - treated Disley's selection as a matter of merit, played Paddy in his correct position, reminded LJL what he expects of him, replace Connell with JP etc...
Posted by: Teestogreen, August 23, 2014, 7:58pm; Reply: 280
What Grimsby did right was press Gateshead from the start they had the players to do it.

Neilson was outstanding early on and Pitman and LJL. The og was caused by the continuous pressing and Neilson's goal was a belter.

At 2 - 0 up the confidence was clear to see and the team today was very balanced.

Special word for Craig Clay - who seemed to play just in front to the back four  - he did not look out of place and his role seemed to be breaking down the opposition midfield thrusts - a lot fitter than when I last saw him.

LJL capped his performance with goals. If he can do this with some regularity this season - the season will be a good one

I slated him when he signed but he will play a vital role this year in that holding midfield Brown. With Clay and Brown in the team we are very solid in the centre and offer a lot of protection for the back 4. It also gives a licence for our wingers and full backs to get forward more. Does anyone know when Ross and Arnold are back?

Yeah, Dave Moore.  :)

He doesn't think they'll be fit for Alfreton. Possibility for Aldershot.

Good to hear about the pressing. The best non league performance ,away at Cambridge 2 years ago, was noticeable for precisely that reason. Wonder why we can't do this more often

Team chosen for deep defence and odd breakaways. We live in hope.

Just watched the gatehead highlights.  Cracking first goal from Neilson.
Very open game though, I don't think I've seen so many good chances go begging.  Reckon it could have ended 10-10 if both teams had converted them.
