How about Richard Broadley and Matty Dawsons' names on the pontoon gate? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300642766508
I'd happily put a fiver in a bucket for that, if anyone's up for organising a collection?

How much do you think it could cost to win the auction ?

I've thought how it could all be done at low cost on here (if you're interested)

We all put in and win the auction and have both their names on it.

If this is going to get done then someone is going to have to pull everything together. I suggest collating the number and names of people willing to contribute then splitting the winning bid equally. Getting the cash off people? I suggest Paypal or meeting people at next home game and publically crossing them off the paid list.

I'm happy to chip in but I won't be around to pull it together and make the winning bid.

I would email the club and explain what the Fishy members are proposed to do, and ask to give someone on here the heads up on what the highest bid is. Give us the chance to beat it.

Anyone connected in the club would new to mention it to the organ grinder.

Also, what if the pledges add up to more than the winning bid? Are people happy for any cash left over to go the the Supporters Trust? Or a charity that Richard and Mattys' families would choose?
My other slight worry about this, is that I didn't know Richard or Matty, and don't know their families. Do we need to run it past them first? I presume there are people on the Fishy that do know them? I don't want to accidently cause any upset or distress to them.

Great! Here's what I've messaged the club via the ebay listing:

I saw that a name for the Pontoon gate was up for sale, and I thought that it would be a nice idea to name it after Matty Dawson and Richard Broadley, two young Mariners fans who passed away in 2011.
Would this be possible - two have two names on the gate? It might also create some good publicity for the club. I'm trying to raise money through the Fishy web forum on this thread: http://www.thefishy.co.uk/cgi-bin/forum/Blah.pl?m-1325361419/
Please let me know if there's any problem with what we're thinking of doing.
David

We're up to about £60 in pledges so far on this thread. What I'll do is place an ebay bid when the pledges get past the current price, which is £87. Please keep spreading the word. This would be a great way to remember these lads. I have a paypal account, but I don't want to collect any money from people until we've won the bid, and then I'll pm people to collect their pledges.

I'll keep everyone updated through this thread.

Let's make this happen.

No, we'll work something out. I know a few people are uncomfortable about sending money over the internet, so I'll organise something. In case anyone's worried or suspicious, and doesn't want to pledge because they don't know me, this is who I am: http://www.thefishy.co.uk/story.php?id=8501985 and I sit in C70 in the Lower Findus.

David a very well done for your great efforts but just a word of possible caution - aren't you worried what might happen if....

- you end up bidding and winning it (for now)
- other people think "great that's it, no need for me to give then" (hopefully not but it might)
- the auction price shoots up on e-bay right at the last second (which it can ! Potentially allowing you no time to gather other pledges and re-bid)
- and you lose ?   :o

Should you maybe

- set a TARGET "max bid" which you can set on e-bay which automatically kicks in to outbid other bidders(bit by bit not necessarily up to the max) when they beat your current bid ? (sorry if you already know this...)

- ask EVERYONE on the fishy to donate a small amount and split the cost between everyone ?

Hey I'll personally go a fiver no probs (possibly more if you really need it), but I said £2 for a very good reason.
How many others might be keeping quiet fearing their "quid" isn't helpful or generous enough ?
I know you'll say "everything is most generously accepted" but hey, it happens !
Let's face it, no-ones pledged a quid yet have they ? (is no-one prepared to ? I find it difficult to believe ! ??))

I'm kind of with BP Vicar - you could potentially split the cost between EVERYBODY (e.g. could you get 300 people pledging £1 for a £300 kitty ?) and if people really want to donate more they can either:

- help make up the numbers/£300 by contibuting multiple "quids" (e.g. £10 is same as 10 people)
- help cover the cost of pullouts/non payments ?
- donate anything left at the end once the final "cost per person" (e.g. if it goes for £150 then for 300 it's 50p each) is worked out to the families ?

I'd consider thinking of a target (max price you're prepared to pay, don't tell the club ?  ;)) and work from there, ASKING for a quid (obviously more if people want to (thumbup))

A bit like the "pay what you want" matchday ticket thingy we had ?  :)

Hope that all makes sense !  :B

Sorry don't mean to interfere, just an idea cos I want you to raise as much as poss from everyone and wouldn't want you to miss out.
Obviously it's entirely up to you, good luck !

All fair points, but I'm trying to keep it simple. There's a chance we won't win it, but at least we'll have tried, and I have contacted the club about what we're doing, so maybe they would make another gate available if we don't win.

If anyone is too embarassed/skint/whatever to pledge a small amount, then please don't be. You're welcome to pledge by PM'ing me, if you feel uncomfortable doing it publicly.

I'm aware that there's a chance people might not pay up, but I'll cover that from my own pocket, within reason. I'd hope people would honour something like this.

If there is any surplus, I'm thinking we should donate that to the Youth Development fund. Is everyone OK with that?

Thanks for your comments, '80's, and I hope I don't seem too negative about them, but I just want to keep it simple for now.

When the auction has finished, I'll also PM my address to people who've pledged, so that they can send a cheque if that's easier.

Thanks for all the offers so far. At the moment we're in the lead at £122 - a bit higher than the pledges I've received. Please tell everyone you know what we're trying to do, and get them to chip in.

I haven't had any response from the club so far (though I only messaged thwm yesterday, and it's a bank holiday today), but I'll copy their response here if I hear anything from them.

This sounds like a great idea, although it's a bit beyond me as to how we could make that happen. If the clubs commercial department get back t o me, I'll suggest that to them. This particular auction is for the naming of the gate, not just a plaque, so your idea is something they could do later.

Hopefully someone at the club looks at the Fishy, and will be able to help with all these ideas after the bank holiday.

Its been said many times the club could do more for the fans (I'm not saying the club does not do enough by any means), but if they were to do something like the stones at Wembley,
http://www.wembleystadium.com/WembleyWay
So every fan could have his or her message heard in return for a donation to the youth fund or similar project.

Just  thought.....Am assuming the other people who are wanting to win this gate auction are probably doing it for either egotistical or commercial reasons. Why not contact the Telegraph to advise that the fans of the club are having the whip round for commemorative reasons - which might have the effect of curtailing any further bids of the egotistical or commercial kind? Might as well use all means at our disposal to make the dream come true....

I just heard from Dale at the club. The high bidder is legitimate, as he's bought lots of stuff from the club in the past.
When it was on sale before (the winner withdrew due to a change in circumstances), it went for £300, with the second highest bid being £280.
Assuming it goes for around the same, we're about halfway there, just now. I've emailed the Telegraph, David Burns at RH, and the Sportstalk team at RH, so hopefully they will drum up some more pledges.

I don't know how we could contact them? There doesn't seem to be a way for rival bidders to contact each other on ebay.

Really well done for getting this up and running. Top work.

WW, the club/Dale must have the bidders details, he could email him n just inform him of whats being proposed. Also will bump mine up to a tenner, since tight bottom Biccys only offered £5  :) :)

Bit of a conflict of interest for the club, as they'll want as high a bid as possible.

I've just had the following email from the club:

David, The club have decided to stop the current auction and let the fans have it at the amount that you have currently bid. We think that it would have sold at around £300, so our board of directors will make it up to that amount and donate the proceeds to a cancer charity. Ive just told the telegraph what we plan to do and they would like to speak to you tomorrow?

Hope that is all ok with you guys?

Well done Guys, just goes to show the power the fans could hold.

Before the latest development, I was going to suggest a memorial to other fans who are no longer with us.  A gate full of plaques or similar.

Anyway, well done to the Club too, great gesture.

I've PM'ed everybody who's pledged. If I've somehow missed you, or if it's tricky for you to pay in any of those ways, send me a PM.
Well done everybody! Keep an eye on this thread, and I'll let you know when things are happening with the presentation/unveiling/whatever's going to happen.
Also, thank you to the club. This has been a very generous gesture from them, especially at a time when they are having financial difficulty themselves.

Excellent news and well done Wiggy, and everyone else. Wiggy, can you let us know if there will be enough left over to have the board/plaque done. Also, is it worth asking the club if it would be possible to have the gates repainted, if so, there would be no cost to them as i'm certain someone on here would be prepared to do the job volountarily.

Sorry all, quite busy at work today, so I'm not as able to keep up with this thread and emails as I was yesterday.
I've just had this email from Dale at the club:

Morning David, Would you be able to get a few of the boys to volunteer
to maybe spruce the gate up a bit? Maybe a lick of paint? Would make it
more of a fitting tribute to Richard and Matty.
Cheers

Are we up for that?
On a personal level, I live an hour from Grimsby, and would realistically only be able to do this on a Saturday, but realise others might be able to pick this up and it on a different day? I'm not much of a handyman either, but I've been waiting for an opportunity to make a mess of that Cod Almighty Mike Newell T-Shirt!

I'm going to start a fresh thread about painting the Pontoon Gate.

You're unbelievable...

It's bad enough you're using a thread about deceased mariners to score points, but as usual, you talk a load of complete and utter crap.

Try reading the entire thread first before jumping on right at the end pointing the finger.
Where were YOU before ?
Just caught up with it my @rse !
Latched on at the end to make yourself look better did you ?

As it happens I was gonna say the same about what fans can achieve. But don't dare talk to me about what individual fans can do !
I was the one asking fans to collectively save their loose change in case of emergency before the sh1t hit the financial fan.
If I remember correctly you poo-pooed that idea so you can intercourse right off !
I must have been mental to even try to help the likes of you, but there's a lot of other good fans who don't deserve the crap they've been served up. (not that you'd care about that you selfish twit !)
Anyway I'll let you and come up with all the big projects that are gonna improve the supporters lot from now on.
In the meantime I suggest you go back to MOANING (hippocrite!) about the lack of interest in spend and save.

Well done wigworld, if only everyone was as co-operative as you.

I remember that loony idea n the fact that the insecure loony who proposed it thought it would work n wanted a campaign started. Nobody poo pood it because of the loony proposed but the fact it was a fkin no brainer none starter for many reasons! 80's you really are pathetic sad loner with massive personality problems. Oops he won't like this so my rep score will be attacked by the nobody man! Next step blocking the prat on fishy for me.
Never read so much banal drivel by one seriously fkd up individual.  :P :P :P

I lowered your rep score earlier today because I think you're a liar.

People can say what they like about me, I don't particluarly care and I won't lower their rep.
But when they start reeling off the porkies it's a different matter.

Anyway if it makes you feel any better set up an 80sglory abuse thread and slag me off to your hearts content - really !
Might be funny... :)

There will be an article in tomorrows Telegraph, and probably one later on when the plaque is presented/unveiled. It's been a crazy couple of days, but worth it!
Thanks again everyone.

I've just heard from Dale, and the gate will be for just a year. It wasn't something I was aware of when I started this, and it wasn't mentioned at all on the ebay listing, but its something the club have been doing for a few years now and it has always been for just a year.
It wasn't my intention (or the clubs) to mislead anyone, and if anyone wants to withdraw their pledge, or have their money returned, I understand completely. Please just send me a PM.
But I hope most of you will still see it a good tribute to the guys, even if it's not for as long as we thought.

We were about £130 over the amount required for the bid, and this money will be given to the PPAG (the parents who are raising funds to keep the youth system going). There might be an opportunity for people who donated to present a cheque on the pitch. Details to follow.
