Can't decide between two games during Brian Laws' reign -

Town 1-0 WBA (Championship)
Town 3-0 West Ham United (FA Cup)

Town 3 Exeter 0 Fourth Division championship Tuesday 2nd May 1972.What a fabulous night,my ears were ringing all the way  home from the sheer volume of noise.

Town 6 - 5 Burnley for pure entertainment value!

Hmmm..... Lincoln 5-1 maybe. There's not many that stand out in recent years. The better games have been away, like Liverpool :)

for the atmosphere one of the home games v Newcastle in the early 90s. for goals v luton in the cup when we did them 7-1 or the 6-5 burnley game

I watched your win over Tottenham, great game that was.

I have to say the Newcastle game that followed it was entertaining, especially seeing Justin Whittle put the elbow into Shearer's head.

1979/80 Third Division championship season and Town had to win to be champions. Stood in the Barratt and witnessed a sublime display topped off with a Kevin Drinkell hat-trick............. happy (very happy) days.

Town 7 Darlington 2. Just the first half really as we were 6-0 up at half-time. We lost the 2nd half 2-1.  ;D

The previous Saturday we'd beat Bradford 5-1 at home.

That was one of the first games I went to as a very young child.
All the goalscorers were gone within about a month of that game. :(

Some great games mentioned but my all-time favourite is Grimsby 3 Barnsley 2. Good Friday in 1982. Barnsley were going for promotion. They went 2-0 up but then Town inspired by Trevor Whymark (easily the most skilful player I've seen in the Black and White stripes) started to play.....
The faces of the Barnsley fans at the end were a mixture of pure shock and rage

Beating Lincoln 3-0 in the snow at Xmas 2005, Ciaran Toner scoring from the edge of the box, Reddy doing his usual and Parkinson firing home from 25 yards, either that or the 4-1 win over Rochdale that same season, being 1 down at half time and kaning them in the second

1966 league cup game v West Ham,who of course had Bobby Moore,Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst at the club.

We matched them,twice took the lead but had to settle for a replay which we lost 1-0 with a disputed goal.

We were in the 3rd division then (league one now) but we sold Tees and Green,our formidable strikeforce at the time,and went into a tailspin which resulted in applying for re election in 1969.By current rules we would have been relegated out of the league.

In that league cup run incidentally we had already seen off Bolton and I think Preston and Birmingham in the days when everyone played their first team in every competition.

Town 3-0 Exeter
Town 2-1 Everton
Town 1-0 Spurs

One game that sticks in my mind is a 3-2 win at home to Peterborough in  1972. i seem to recall we were 2-0 down and perhaps, Ian Turner's debut(?). Dave Worthington scored a rare goal and the game was televised ( that means that it was on the following day for the younger element)

Town West Ham when Laws and Bonnetti shook hands on the pitch beforehand, the atmosphere that night was electric.

Fulham game to get into the play off final.

When we beat Wrexham 5-1 Birtles Hat trick to go up, my first taste of success with town!

Grimsby 4-3 Bristol Rovers and it was about 4/5 years a go, Craig Disley scored 2 that day for Rovers.

Huddersfield when cockers scored 2 belters.
West Ham when Beasant was in goal - not sure the ball went above head height many times all game
Sheff Utd - Drinkell hattrick
Hull City - when Childs scored the winner right at the end

More recently, the 3-2 win against Bournemouth two seasons ago seemed to have a lot. Colgan clangers, hand of cod, red card after half a minute and a last minute winner from an on-loan super sub. That's probably my favourite home match for bloody years.

This one, was it boxing day ? maybe not. Remember Batch sprinting 100 yards to "commiserate" with their fans at the end. Pure old style town.

3-1 v Notts County in the League Cup.  Not sure when it was exactly - probably 70s - but I seem to recall 14000+ spectators and a memorable evening's entertainment.
OR 2-1 over Everton in the same competition when Mike Brolly ran the Merseysiders ragged.

Agree with this post,that fulham game was a cracker,the atmosphere was electric.

Sigone already mentioned it, but the 'total football' destruction of Huddersfield should be shown on a loop to anyone who ever has a bad word for Alan Buckley.
The Barnsley 3.2 sticks out, as does the Sheff Utd 4.0. Burnley 6.5 was mad, and even getting hammered by the Hammers was interesting. West Brom 1.0 and 5.1 were special (Anyone remember how hard Grovesy hit that pen?). So few of these games have been in recent years, but the wheel of fortune may be turing around again....We shall soon see.

My first ever game. I was only 8. Some days I wish Town had lost...

Can't remember much, but I do remember Joe Waters being outstanding.

Agreed. I showed that to a current Town fan who isn't old enough to appreciate how we used to play. He was astounded.

Although the result was great, we demolished a Doncaster side 5-0 at home and it was...expected...! The atmosphere wasn't particularly great and the goals just kept coming.

56/57 or 57/58 Season 3-1 against Fulham we ran rings round Jonney Haynes (the brylcream boy!) and co.
72 3-0 Exeter like others can still hear the noise over 23,000 in the ground fantastic.
79/80 4-0 Sheffield U they had Alex Sabella playing for them, he got firmly taken out once by town defense early on and then vanished for the rest of the game.
79/80 2-1 Everton after they scored first a very well worked goal from a corner, in to the near post headed out by their player the bang into the back of the net from the edge of the area, thought we were in for a hammering then Brolly getting 2 think it was the second one he nutmeged Southall, then Everton camped in our half, could still be there and it would still be 2-1, never seen Town so determined to hold a lead, no panic just great defending, played for each other and Tony Ford could have made it safe but shot at the keeper, think he was just too knackered to hit the target. :) :) :)

I am so glad I was there at each of those, in the Pontoon along with the other thousands of Mariners' fans witnessing Town making their mark....

Anyone remember us beating Hull 1-0 in the 66-7 season when they went up as champions from division 3 and John Fielding scored the winning goal? Thousands of hully gullies in the Osmond with black and gold brollies. Nobody expected the win which made it all the sweeter.
Away it has to be the Wimbledon FACup game

The Exeter and Everton games were superb for atmosphere and for Town performances. I've written about the Everton game before. The Exeter game and the crowd were instrumental in their manager John Newman coming here later on and starting the dynasty that died under Mike Lyons. For atmosphere as well, the 2-2 against West Ham in the League Cup QF against West Ham in 1965 takes some beating.

The Tuesday night of the 7-1 against Scunthorpe was brilliant. At the time Rod Green had been injured and Dave Worthington had filled in at CF for the previous game (or 2?). In fact Town had 3 right backs in the side at Crystal Palace on the Saturday - Jimmy Bloomer at RB, Jim Thompson in midfield and Worthington up front. Bobby Ross had played RW. But Green was back that night with a hat trick and Brian Hill was devastating on the left wing. Clemence was in their goal but as far as I remember, Keegan wasn't in their team. He certainly wasn't in the programme anyway.

The 4-0 against Sheff.U was probably Joe Water's best ever game for Town. They just didn't know how to stop him and the way Drinkell made space for him to get into the box was an object lesson in forward play.

My all time favourite performance from the old days was the night we beat Southampton 3-2 with 2 goals from my hero Chips and one from Ralph Hunt. Johnny Scott and Jimmy Fell were unstoppable that night in 1961. The football from both sides was tremendous. I think Brian Clifton was playing for Southampton but the best player on the pitch by a mile was Don Donovan. Pure class.

Wilkinson and Lund up front with Drinkell on the bench,

It was on the telly and we completely outplayed a good Wolves team,

Glad you said that RRFC, That game is one of the reasons Joe is my avatar. Trouble is, I was a lot younger and didn't really understand the intricacies of the game at that age, I got the passion and the excitement and the atmosphere and the sheer joy of a game like that, just was not knowledgeable of how we did it. I do have a hazy memory of JWs goal that day, when he ran 60 odd yards to finish. Icing on the cake of my formative years as a Mariner.

That was a great match  .......... but absolutely f.....g freezing ! That goal from Parky was just quality and one of the best goals I have seen at BP.Another great goal was from KT against Carlisle in our play off season at home when we lost 2-1 ! UTM !

5-1 V Lincoln, that was a brilliant day that.
Spurs game has to be up there.
Burnley match for pure entertainment, everytime either team went forward they looked like they was going to score.
Barnet last season, just to give us that glimmer of hope.

Brentford game, we beat them 1-0 I think. Rankin header from a Hockless cross? Anybody remember this? More info on it.

I'd forgotten about that Hull game Jock. In those days we used to stand in the Osmond so I came home for the match and went in there about 40 minutes before KO and had to stand in a sea of black and amber for the whole game. Couldn't even cheer when we got the winner. ;D

Feel sorry for town fans that didnt at least grow up with the 1990 side, because there's only been fleeting moments in the past decade.

Spurs 1-0 was great for atmosphere.
4-2 against burnley in 89/90? that was one of my first memories.

So many to mention but one match that sticks in my mind is a 1-1 draw with QPR who then beat us on penalties. Neil Woods was fantastic that night but missed his penalty.

The Fulham play off game was fantastic. I had a restricted view seat in the Upper Findus, can't see them selling those seats again for a while!

The Spurs game was also an amazing result but the actual match wasn't that memorable bar JPKK's late strike.

Also remember us playing Coventy in the cup (late 80s?) and that was a great game with a great atmosphere.

Only just in the last decade, but towards the end of the 2002 season we were starting to look very good with Butterfield and Boulding ripping defences apart between them. I had high hopes for the folling season if we could've followed on from where we left off, but Butterfield went and that was that. Some great results though - town 6 wonbles 2, town 5 palace 2, town 3 birmingham 1 etc...

IIRC the following Tuesday we went to Everton (Best Team in the Country at the) time in the League cup and won courtesy of Wilko's last minute goal

I remember getting the train back to Barnetby after the Rotherham game, from Cleethorpes station. Felt very smug about it. Then the train stopped at New Clee and picked up 200 severely p1ssed off Rotherham fans. It was a long journey.

for some reason i thought that finished 3-1?!?!?!? as seem to remember me and my best mate "celebrating" their goal in the ponny!??

one game i am PROUD to have been at with only 150 others, was a lincs cup game and seeing futch score his only goal for town. proud as fook :)

fulham 98

burnley 2002? (3-1)

Several for me. Unfortunately, 97/98, living in Skegness area we were unable to get tickets for play-offs and Auto windscreens semi-final game so we watched it (me, my brother and my dad) believe or not on teletext!! The quarter final v Blackpool was brilliant though. Burnett header at the Pontoon end lte on and the atmosphere was electric. When the goal went in the first 5-10 rows imploded towards to hoardings and the realisation that Wembley might just be in sight.

Burnley 6-5. Everyone at school (I was 16 at the time) was talking about it the next day and I was the only Town fan in my year. I remember the players going in at half-time and everyone in the Main Stand looking at each other in disbelief.

Burnley 3-1 to secure safety in Division 1. A brilliant performance and a great day. When the results came in in the car on the way home it was amazing.

Barnsley 6-1 for the comedy value of seeing all them Yorkshire gets trying to leave after 40 mins and it burying the memory of Hignet giving us a footballing lesson a few seasons previously.

Lincoln away 04/05 0-0. An incredible atmosphere. It really was electric and when all those Town fans turned up 15 mins in with tickets but nowhere to sit it was hilarious. The Town fan in the Lincoln end who slowly unzipped his jacket and then got pummeled by about 40 Lincoln fans was also pretty comical. For a match under Slade as well, Town actually played decent football that night and Ronnie Bull had his only decent game in a Grimsby.

Wolves 0-0 Croudson's debut. Any game with Wolves gets a big turn out from Town fans and this night was no different.
