I know this could be rather difficult by I can only think of a few players that have been on loan and been awesome or even been on loan been awesome and made the deal permanent.

- Clive Mendonca - Excellent poacher was gutted when he left Town for Charlton for 750,000 - think he was originally on loan for a month from Sheff Utd and then snapped up for 75K Sheff Utd signed him from Rotherham.
- Chris Todd - Strong centre back with excellent leadership qualities signed on loan from Bolton or was it Blackburn Hmmm could have been Derby lol.
- Dave Beasant - immense quality and presence - even though he only play a dozen games he never conceded one goal.

Martin Patterson was ok fantastic work rate, and Kabba was very good look whats happened to him now though.  We certainly seem to be a very good team for kick starting players careers.

Michael played up front though were the glory was(supposedly) whilst Richard went calmly about the business he was brought in for. That he went on from there to bigger and better things did not surprise me.  Not in the same class as the Joe Waters of this world but a darn good loannee and worth a mention.

It's absolutely ridiculous to put Zhang Enhua as "one of the reasons" for this situation. He came almost a decade ago and was, in my opinion, a really good player for us. Specifically remember his goals v Burnley and Bolton. Top player.

I'm certain Michael Keane was also a midfielder. Central by trade but also (unfortunately) used on the left just because he was left footed.

Must admit I thought he had either played left for us or in the middle alongside Hughes and usually Groves as part of a 3.

Enhua scored a few goals for us. Unfortunately, as a centre-half, he wasn't particularly good at stopping them going in at the other end.

Agree 100% with that. Never understood people's fascination with him. Played like a headless chicken running about closing down which you just shouldn't be doing as a centre back. Would have done alright as a ball-winning central midfielder i think.

Similarly, Georges Santos was another that was treated as some sort of hero and got all the end of season awards. But i also thought he was quite a poor defender. Good at individual battles or one-on-ones with players but terrible positioning and awareness. I know he came to us as a midfielder and although he got sent off in one of his only games in midfield for us (pretty sure it was against Rotherham and we eventually went down to 9 men but held on to draw), i'd have preferred to see him there.

EDIT: I appreciate Santos was a short term contract, not a loan, but whenever someone mentions Enhua i always think of Santos and how they were both highly thought of by fans but imo were part of the reason we shipped so many goals.

Martin pringle was also a class apart, I can still hear the crack as challinor went through the back of him! :(

For me the most impressive loan players have been Andy Todd and John Oster. Todd was immense, had a presence/aura about him and was a class above everyone on the pitch everytime he played for us.
Oster was also different class the last time he was here and at that time was too good for the Championship (although maybe not quite ready for the premiership). Was a joy to watch especially in the few games when Kabba was still here too and they were linking up.

The other one that springs to my mind straight away is David Nielsen. Created a buzz and excitement only bettered by Bonetti in the time i've been watching Town. Could have gone on to become a Town hero had he signed for us like he said he was going to.

Conlon. He was immense at the end of the 08/09 season. His debut for Town (3-0 against Gillingham?) was one of my favourite memories of the last few years.

Shame about the rest of his time here.

The obsession with Martin Pringle is difficult for me to understand as well. I saw him in his debut, a 0-0 draw at Forest I believe and he was quality but he only played part of the next match and broke his leg. Surely two games isn't enough.

David Nielsen was the best with ease.

Did Ivano come on loan first before he was bought out of various contracts?

Plus when we got woods from bradford didn't he score something like 9 goals in 12 games then failed to score for a period once signed??
Posted by: Kris2, December 16, 2010, 2:45pm; Reply: 54
David Nielsen springs to mind. I'll never forget the first game i saw him play he got the ball in like the second minute and just ran at the defence only stopped from a good save. Great player shame about his "i'm worth more" attitude.

Wayne Henderson came in with everyone thinking he'd be excrement and in his first game or two he didn't look that great but then suddenly it all changed. Great goalkeeper. Very agile and a quick thinking also extreamly brave he'd do a few suicidal things but they always came off. Exciting to watch anyways.

Pringle - didn't see enough of him sadly
Nielsen - good but slightly spoiled it with his attitude

Gilbert signed straight from Northampton for £50,000. He was signed by Arthur Mann who had managed him at boston 5 years earlier. Dave DID have a loan spell with town during Buckleys second spell.
